Seishun, their “super rookie”, sets out to win a place in the National Tournament. They hope to capture the coveted title. To qualify, the team must play through the Kanto Regionals and Tokyo Prefectural. They have a shared road ahead of themselves, as they will be playing at the same time against a multitude of strong schools that each play tennis in their own ways. Ryouma must learn to work with his teammates if he and his team want to become champions.

Tokuchi is a player whose success or failure will depend on the outcome of every game. Will Tokuchi be able overcome those who try to stop him?

Hanamichi Sakuragi is a notorious personality known for his temper and his massive height. He enrolls at Shohoku High in hopes of finding a girlfriend. However, his notoriety has led to him being avoided most of the time. Soon after certain events, Hanamichi has two clear thoughts: “I hate Basketball” and “I desperately want a girlfriend.”

Haruko Akagi, a young girl from Japan, approaches Hanamichi and asks him whether he enjoys basketball. Hanamichi instantly falls in love with her and blurts out a passionate affirmative.

He is then led to the gym, where he is asked if he can do an impromptu slam-dunk. Haruko attempts to impress him by jumping, but he overshoots and instead smashes his head into the board. Haruko tells the captain of the basketball team of Hanamichi’s almost-inhuman physical abilities. He slowly finds himself drawn to the camaraderie, competition and spirit of the sport he used to resent.
