49- Frances Ha (2012)

Frances Ha is a comedy-drama, but it can also be considered a slice of life film. Baumbach directed the film and co-wrote it with Greta Gerwig.

The film was praised for its sensitive direction and the portrayal of the characters. Frances Halladay, a struggling dancer, is nearing the end of her dancing career with no recourse.

Frances feels stuck because her best friend and roommate seem to be moving forward in life.

Michael Damian is the director of High Strung, an American dance drama. This film showcases hidden talent.

Janeen Damian and Michael wrote the story and heavily relied on hip-hop. A classical ballet dancer must pass her compulsory contemporary dance class. However, she is having trouble doing so.

Johnnie, a violinist, meets her. He makes great hip-hop music but is rude and unhelpful.

The ballet dancer is inspired by him after watching him perform in a hip-hop dance-off. She now needs to convince him to join her.

46- Tap (1989)

Best Dance Movies. Tap is a drama about a tap dancer who is trying to save his life. Nick Castle directed the film and wrote it. It focuses on tap dancing.

Gregory Hines plays a dancer and Sammy Davies Jr. stars as the legendary Sammy Davies Jr. Max Washington was a burglar who was currently serving time for past crimes.

He was recently released from prison and he reconnected with his former girlfriend. He cannot escape the crime world if he has served his sentence.

Max is trying to avoid crime but an old associate wants Max to get involved in another heist.

45- Save The Last Dance (2001)

Save The Last Dance is a drama about teenage dance. It was a box-office success, despite mixed reviews from critics.

The film tells the story of how dance can bring people together and help to heal broken dreams. Sara, an aspiring dancer, loses her mother the day she auditions for Juilliard.

She is discouraged and gives up on her dancing dreams. Sara moves in with her father and enrolls at a predominantly African school.

She falls in love with a black man who heals and encourages her to follow her dreams.

44- Work IT (2020)

Work It is a comedy-dance film. It was released on Netflix, and it received the highest viewing figures on its release weekend.

The film received mixed reviews from critics and average ratings. However, the film was praised by viewers at 85% approval. The film opens with a high school dancing group causing havoc when their sound and lighting is disrupted.

The technician who spilled her drink during the performance is severely disciplined and kicked out by the crew leader.

The technician fantasizes about joining Duke University. She lies to herself that she is part of the crew and must now learn to dance and participate in the Work It competition for her place at the university.

43- Magic Mike (2012)

Steven Soderbergh’s film Magic Mike stars Magic Mike. It’s a comedy-drama about Tampa’s male strip club scene and its party scene.

Although the film isn’t strictly a dance movie, the strip club and parties are choreographed. Young college dropout wants to get a job as a construction worker, but lacks the necessary contacts and experience.

Magic Mike, a seasoned stripper takes Mike under his wing and introduces him male stripping. Mike wants to own a carpentry company and is a stripper to help pay the bills.

The lifestyle and drugs of the party scene corrupt Mike and make him see the unsavoury people.

42- Flashdance (1983)

Flashdance, a romantic drama about the dreams of a professional dancer, is set in modern day. Adrian Lyne, who was previously a director of short videos and commercials, made the film as an early project.

Although Flashdance was not well received by major critics, it was a surprising box office success. Many awards were also given to the music.

Alex is a welding worker by day and a exotic dancer at night. At the nightclub she works, Alex and her friends dream of a better future.

Alex dreams of becoming a ballet dancer. However, she is intimidated by the process and decides to pull back. Her boyfriend takes the reins and gives her an audition.

He encourages Alex not to lose heart and to keep going with her dream.

41- Hope Dances (2017)

Hope Dances is a touching story about a young girl forced to choose between dance and sports.

Andrew Dillon wrote and directed the film. It is generally agreed that the film depicts the struggle between teens and young people who must choose between their dreams.

Hope, a young girl, is an excellent softball player and enjoys dancing ballet. Her father hopes to see her play softball professionally but her mother wants her to be a ballet dancer.

Hope feels pressured by her parents to pick one and is afraid of disappointing them both. Hope is fortunate to have a supportive and loyal group of friends who support her in her dance and softball endeavors.

40- Step up 2: The Streets (2008)

Best Dance Movies. Step Up 2: The Streets, a sequel to Step Up, is a film about dance drama and dance. This movie has a new director, and a new scriptwriter. Yet, it grossed more at the box-office than the original.

Although the film received negative reviews from critics, the film was loved by the audience. The music was very popular.

Andie, Tyler’s niece, hopes to be a professional dancer. She is rebellious and loathes authority.

Her aunty, however, joins her at Maryland School of Dance. Andie is able to form her own dance troupe and keep her dream of dancing on the Streets alive, despite the choreography required by the formal dance school.

39- The Company (2003) 

The Company is a fascinating movie that follows the lives of dancers at The Company. It’s a collection that tells stories about choreographers and other staff at Joffrey Ballet.

There are many stories interwoven throughout the story, so there is no single plot. Alberto Antonelli, a choreographer at The Company, is currently preparing for a show.

One of these dancers could be the principal dancer in the production. She also starts to feel for another dancer, which can distract from her goal.

38- ABCD Anybody Can Dance (2013)

ABCD (Anybody Can Dance) is an Indian film. It’s a drama about rivalries among different dance groups and factions.

Some rivalries end in peace, while others are a disaster. Remo D’Souza is the director. The cast includes contestants from various dance competitions.

JDC is a corrupt company that dances against its competitors and judges in order to win competitions. Their choreographer quits because he is unhappy with the way things are.

He initially hopes to go back to his hometown. But after watching some young parkour performers escape the police, he becomes inspired.

The story continues on to describe how the choreographer helps youth overcome their differences and how dance brings them together against corrupt JDC.

37- Cuban Fury (2014)

Cuban Fury, a British comedy, revolves around Nick Frost and Rashida Jones, the love interest of Nick Frost, and Chris O’Dowd, the rival office/love partner.

The film is set against a backdrop of salsa dancing competition. Nick Frost was a champion salsa dancer when he was a teenager. However, he has been bullied and quit dancing.

He is very interested in his boss, but is distracted by Chris O’Dowd’s bullying and interference.

Frost discovers his boss loves Salsa, and he plans to use his old passion of dance to win her back.

36- Step up (2006)

Step Up is the debut film in the series of dance drama films. Anne Fletcher directed the film in her directorial debut.

It was a huge success and earned $114 million at the box office. The film had a budget of $12million.

Tyler Gage, a young man from disadvantaged backgrounds, was caught vandalizing Maryland School of Dance. He is sentenced for community service at the school and gets his second chance in his life.

Gage is a contemporary dancer in search of a partner. Gage is from a criminally infested background, so he must work extra hard to make the most of his chance.

35- Footloose (1984)

Footloose is a film about musical dance. It is about a young man who resists a ban on dancing in a small town.

Although the film received mixed reviews from critics, audiences loved it. It was a success because they loved it. 

Ren, a high school student, moves from Chicago to a small community. After a night of dancing, Ren learns that dancing is now prohibited in the town.

Although the minister can convince the townfolk, councilors and residents to ban dancing, his daughter is not impressed.

Ariel, his daughter rebels against her dad and supports Ren to get the ban lifted.

34- The Way We Dance (2013) 

Best Dance Movies. The Way We Dance, a Hong Kong movie about a group of dancers, is called The Way We Dance. Adam Wong directed the film with a story he co-wrote and Saville Chan, who was also the co-producer.

Dancers form a dance group out of their passion for dancing. As they become more popular, differences start to emerge. This causes the crew to fall from grace.

This film documents their journey to reunite and regain their fame and top spot as a dance group.

The film won both awards for music and story at the Hong Kong Film Critics Society Awards, Hong Kong Film Awards and Golden Horse Awards.

33- Take the Lead (2006)

Take the Lead is a dramatized dance about Pierre Dulaine, a real-life instructor of dance. He is also the founder of Dancing Classrooms, a new way to teach dancing for emotional and social development.

The Dulaine method of teaching ballet was created by him. Pierre Dulain, a dance teacher, stumbles across a group of students with disadvantaged backgrounds who resort to vandalism or burglary.

He offers to teach dance and assist the students in the detention program. Although everyone is skeptical, it slowly begins to work.

Dulaine is a constant source of encouragement and guidance to students. She teaches ballroom dancing, and even takes part in competitions.

32- Beat Street (1984)

Best Dance Movies. Beat Street is a dance drama movie. It tells the story of an aspiring GJ caught up in the various turf wars, his dreams, and social pressure.

Although the film received mixed reviews in America and abroad, the audience enjoyed it. DJ Kenny and his graffiti artist friend hope to bring hip-hop music to a wider audience. 

Lee, Kenny’s younger brother, joins the dance crew. Their attempts to dance are thwarted by life events, such as the turf wars between dance crews, etc.

To wake Kenny up and allow him to follow his dreams fully, it takes a great loss.

31- Step Up Revolution (2012)

Step Up Revolution can also be called Step Up 4: Miami Heat, in some countries. This is the fourth installment of the series, and the third most popular film in the series.

Scott Speer’s directorial debut with this film. The film follows three leaders of The Mob, a flash mob.

They want to be accepted by the public and gain more popularity. They decide to help the community after they realize that a particular development project could threaten a common ground for the youth of the community.

30- The Dancer (2016)

Best Dance Movies. The Dancer is a French biographical movie about Loie Fuller, and her peer Isadora Duncan. The film is based upon Giovanni Lista’s book, La Danseuse in France.

It was highly praised and received many nominations at both the Lumieres Awards (and the Cesar Awards). Loie Fuller, an American actress and dancer, was born in 1932.

She was a frequent performer throughout Europe, and was known as the pioneer of modern lighting and dance. Isadora Duncan, on the other hand, had a difficult relationship with her both as a protégée and rival.

29- Burlesque (2010)

Burlesque tells the story of a Burlesque dance troupe. The film received praise for its music, dance and performances.

The story was criticised for being repetitive and unimpressive. The film received the Golden Globe Award in Best Original Song from Cher and Christina Aguilera.

Ali, a waitress from a small town, moves to LA to be a dancer. Ali is rejected by everyone and joins Tess’s burlesque club.

Tess, who is co-owner of club, has financial difficulties getting a loan from a bank despite her success. Nikki, a dancer with alcoholism issues, is part of the story.

28- Dancehall Queen (1997)

Best Dance Movies. Dancehall Queen is a Jamaican film that tells the story of a mother struggling to cope with major life problems.

It’s a great adventure with real-life problems, and the determination to live a better life. One mother works as a street vendor, and it is difficult to make ends work.

A wealthy and suspicious man is looking out for her teenage daughter, so she is forced to get financial assistance.

A violent thug threatens to kill her friends at the same time. To attract these two men away from her family, the mother becomes a mystery dancer and pits them against one another.

27- Polina Danser Sa Vie (2016)

Polina, Danser Sa Vie is a French drama about dance that was premiered at Venice’s film festival. The film is about the struggles of classical dancers as well as ballet dancers against contemporary forms of dance.

Polina’s dreams are not compatible with her parents. Polina is a passionate dancer and her parents have her enroll in ballet classes.

Her talent is recognized by the teacher, who trains her with more discipline. This makes Polina feel ill and she declines the Bolshoi Ballet offer to her.

She soon realizes that modern ballet is quite different than ballet, and she struggles to learn it again. She loses her passion for dance, but a patient teacher restores it to her.

26- High Strung Free Dance (2018)

High Strung Free Dance follows the film High Strung. Jane Seymour is the only cast member who returns in this sequel.

Contemporary dance performance is featured on a stage that has traditionally dominated ballet. This film received more positive reviews than its predecessor.

Broadway has selected a young, enthusiastic choreographer. He is innovative and has unconventional methods of implementing his ideas.

He chooses a jobless pianist and a contemporary dancer, who have no experience in performing a Broadway show with a lot at stake.

25- Suspiria (2018)

Best Dance Movies. Suspiria, a supernatural horror movie that is a remake an older Italian film of the same name, is called Suspiria. As a cover for the machinations of a coven made up of witches, the film uses the theme from a dance academy.

Suspiria received several nominations, including the David Di Donatello award and the Venice Film festival award. A young American dancer travels to Germany to audition for a company.

She finds another student missing as she approaches the spot. The psychotherapist at the dance academy suspects foul play.

One student confessed to seeing witchcraft performed by the matrons at the academy. This student is now the missing one.

24- White Nights (1985)

White Nights tells the story of two dancers who defect to their home countries. It received praises for its music, dance choreography and performances by Gregory Hines, Mikhail Baryshnikov.

It was criticized for being too imaginative and weak. The story is about a Russian dancer who fled to America and now lives in Tokyo.

The plane crashes in Siberia and the KGB immediately catches up to him. The incident involves an American dancer who defected from the USSR to perform with him in a major performance of dance.

Before they can learn to work together, the two dancers must endure racial tensions as well as differences in culture and opinions.

23- Dance Academy: The Movie (2017)

Best Dance Movies. Dance Academy: The Movie, an Australian film about dance, is a sequel to the TV series Dance Academy. It was telecast from 2010 to 2013.

The film focuses on the lives of students after they leave the academy. Tara Webster and Kat Karamakov are back. Christian Reed, Abigail Armstrong and Christian Reed are also in the film. Ben Tickle is the director.

Christian decides what he will do next after Tara fails to pass the auditions for National Ballet Academy. Ben Tickles is still recovering from cancer, but he continues to train with Tara.

Ollie is currently working on a new choreography and everyone hopes to continue.

22- Born To Dance (2015)

Born to Dance is a classic Hollywood drama about dance. The lead couple is James Stewart and Eleanor Powell.

The film received nominations for the Academy Awards for Best dance direction and Best original music score. Nora is an aspirant dancer and hopes to perform on Broadway.

Ted, a sailor meets her and they fall for each other. Unfortunately, Ted is attracted to a Broadway star who wants him to love her back.

Nora is the understudy to the Broadway star. However, she struggles with her emotions and her desire to be a Broadway star.

21- The White Crow (2018)

Ralph Fiennes directed The White Crow. It tells the story of Rudolph Nureyev who was the first Soviet artist, during the Cold War Era, to flee to the West.

The film’s biographical dance film received high praise from critics at film festivals in Tokyo and London.

Rudolph Nureyev, a charismatic and gifted ballet dancer, is the greatest of his generation. He cannot, however, live under the Soviet Union’s authoritarian regime.

His personality and attitude are strained and he begins to feel drawn towards the West through his Paris performances.

Nureyev escapes the clutches of the KGB despite their best efforts.

20- Center Stage (2000)

Best Dance Movies. Center Stage, a film about ballet drama, follows the story of 12 ballet dancers selected through auditions across the country to join the American Ballet Academy.

This film was Amanda Schull’s debut film and Zoe Saldana’s first film. Jody, Charlie and Eva are all training at American Ballet Academy to get a spot on the American Ballet Company’s stage or to show their talents to a wider audience.

Every student comes with their own problems and we help them to grow from these experiences.

19- Top Hat (1935)

Top Hat, a dance musical by the legendary pair Fred Astaire & Ginger Rogers, is another example of their inimitable partnership. This was the film that made the most money of all the films by the same pair.

Songs from the films are also iconic, particularly Top Hat White Tie and Tails. They are still popular and are often referred to in films.

Fred Astaire, a dancer, comes to London with his manager to perform in a show. He falls in love with Ginger Rogers, a beautiful British model.

Rogers has a rival for his affection, and that rival is a fashion designer.

Rogers is constantly annoyed by Astaire’s antics, even though the situation is dire. This is a hilarious comedy that makes the film enjoyable.

18- Billy Elliot (1999)

Best Dance Movies. Billy Elliot, a British comedy-drama about coming-of age, was released in 2009. It received high praises and admiration, and was nominated for multiple Academy Awards and BAFTA Awards.

Jamie Bell, who played Billy Elliot, was the youngest recipient for Best Actor BAFTA.

Billy Elliot, a young boy from a Northern Irish mining town, is named after his father. He falls in love with ballet and decides that he will learn it.

His father strongly objects to the negative stereotypes because he is afraid of being associated with them. Due to the ongoing strike by miners, he is already feeling a lot of pressure.

The question is: Will Billy Elliot be able to keep his balance between his love of ballet and his family?

17- Moulin Rouge! (2001)

Moulin Rouge! Baz Luhrmann’s final film in his Red Curtain Trilogy. The film takes place in Paris’ Montmartre district, in the famous cabaret Moulin Rouge.

Luhrmann co-wrote, directed, and produced the film. Both critics and viewers loved it. The film’s music, direction and style were all praised by the critics.

Christian, a Bohemian poet, arrives in Paris with stars in both his eyes. He assists in the completion of a play that will be performed at Moulin Rouge and then he is admitted to the cabaret as an actor.

He falls in love with Satine, a beautiful courtesan. He reciprocates her poetry and sensitive soul.

A powerful Duke is interested in Satine, however. This film features a love triangle, song and dance, as well as colorful costumes that make it unforgettable.

16- The Red Shoes (1983)

15- Saturday Night Fever (1977)

Saturday Night Fever, a dance drama film, is famous for its music and socially relevant plot. It also features some of the most memorable dance moves.

This story was inspired by Nik Cohn’s New York Magazine article Tribal Rites of the New Saturday Night.

Tony Manero, an Italian-American teenager on the brink of adulthood, is Tony Manero. He’s disillusioned with the reality of his working-class family life.

His inability to improve the socio-political environment of the city. Mareno is confronted with these terrible realities and takes to the dance floor at his local nightclub.

His attitude and moves are a dominant feature of the nightclub, making him feel at the top.

14- Swing Time (1936)

Lucky is a gambler, and a dancer. He is trying to raise money for his wedding. His father challenges him to raise $25000 to prove he is worthy to marry.

He meets a dance teacher to make the money. But as he falls in love with her, it becomes clear that he cannot earn the $25000 that will tie him to his fiancée.

13- Grease (1978)

Best Dance Movies. Grease is an American musical comedy and romance film. Based on the Broadway musical of the same name, it was adapt by Allan Carr. It was directed by Randal Kleiser.

In the year it was released, the film was the highest-grossing musical. The soundtrack to the film was second only after Saturday night Fever.

This story tells the story of a high school romance between Danny, a greaser, and Sandy, a good girl who moved to his school recently.

They fall in love over the summer, and are shocked to meet each other at school.

2- Yeh Ballet (2020)

Sooni Taraporewala directed Yeh Ballet, a Hindi film about dance. It was released by Netflix and is based upon a Taraporewala’s short documentary about a real-life incident that occurred in Mumbai.

Two children from poverty discover ballet and dance, and they decide to learn it to their dismay.

Two teenagers are found by an eccentric dance teacher at the academy and are taken under his wing. Society puts pressure on the teens to follow their dreams despite ridicule.

1- And Then We Danced (2019)

And Then We Dared is a Georgian movie that addresses issues such as homophobia, cultural rigidities, hopes and aspirations, and homophobia.

Georgia has strong anti-gay churches groups and the film was not permitted to screen there. Filming was difficult because of the 2013 anti-homophobia protests and the clashes.

This story concerns Merab, a young dancer who is struggling with his family, his love of dance and the discrimination that he experiences.
