Background

Bisco disguises himself as a monk to try and pass Gunma’s border. As he waits to have his papers processed, Bisco speaks with Inoshige. Inoshige eventually notices Bisco’s bow, knowing that monks cannot kill with ranged weapons. He asks Bisco for a sutra. Bisco then comes out and runs alongside Jabi along Actagawa. He uses a king trumpet mushroom as a launcher to jump over the wall.

They stop near Imihama for the night. Jabi’s Rust illness is spreading and he wants to tell Bisco, but Bisco won’t listen. Jabi protects Bisco by using his body as a shield when an Escargot fighter is launched at them by Tirol. Bisco runs to Imihama in search of a doctor after he has taken the Escargot down. After asking around, he finds Milo who gives Bisco a mushroom and asks him to make medicine from it.

While they are being chased by Imihama’s Watch and Kurokawa’s elite troops, Bisco sets out to distract them while Milo tends to Jabi. Bisco defeats the elite force, but then has to face Pawoo. Pawoo is skeptical when he tries to convince her that mushrooms don’t have any bad side effects and can be eaten with rust. He thinks she knows Milo, so he distracts her and gives him the chance to knock her out.

Pawoo is taken back to Jabi by Milo. He is amazed that Jabi can already move. Milo tells Bisco that Pawoo is his sister. Jabi informs Bisco that Milo won’t allow him to travel due to his injuries. He also points out that Milo can help him make medicine. Bisco initially refused to accept the offer, but he soon realized that Milo was willing to take on any risk to help his sister with her rusting disease. Jabi distracted the Watch, Bisco escaped Imihama with Milo.

Bisco and Milo are on the lookout for Actagawa. They follow him towards the Ashio Bonecoal Mountain Mines once they have found him. Bisco attempts to explain to Milo how Actagawa works, but he keeps throwing Milo off him. They stop at Nikko War Memorial to see Tirol who was carrying a balloonworm. Milo pulls it out and saves her. They sell them food and go to bed.

However, during the night, they wake up to discover that the memorial is actually a huge coal-eating mantis shrimp. Bisco is stuck on the thing and Tirol still clings to him. He tells Milo where Actagawa should attack the shrimp. Bisco shoots an arrow and makes mushrooms, which kills the animal and saves them. They were too close to the mines so one of the shrimp’s cannons shot and destroyed the mine.

The group travels towards Calvero Shellsand Sea. Bisco spots a watermelon and rushes for it. But a child grabs it first. Other armed children arrive as he struggles for the watermelon from the child. They believe they are kidnappers for Kurokawa, but Bisco doesn’t believe them. Bisco, feeling compelled to act, shows his wanted poster and says they will get a large reward if they give him alive to Imihama. They then take Bisco and Milo into their home and lead them there. Bisco is captured by the children and taken into custody.

Nuts, the children’s leader, says it belonged to his father but that he was killed for opposing Imihama. Kousuke watches over Bisco, and Bisco notices that he has a map of the train route. Kousuke tells him that his father saved Kousuke from a Mushroom Keeper in his youth, but he wasn’t able to repay the Mushroom Keeper. Kousuke thanks Bisco and gives him the map.

The bars and chains were rusted, so Bisco is able to free himself. The town is attacked by flying blowfish and children cannot defend themselves. Bisco kills the blowfish with his harpoon, saving Kousuke. Kousuke is then informed by Bisco that the map doesn’t contain furigana. Kousuke realizes that Bisco cannot read kanji. Bisco offers to shoot an arrow for each station Kousuke names. As Kousuke does so, Bisco defeats all fish. Nuts then gives Bisco his father’s harpoon before they leave the town.

Bisco and Milo arrive in Shimobuki to find Tirol frozen. She saves her and explains that they are headed towards Shirakaba Line. Tirol, a trader, manages to negotiate a great deal for them. He also gives them a free book. They find a train that works with old coins when they reach the subway. Tirol says she was a mechanic, and suggests a way to get around the fare. Milo and Tirol finish their work, then Tirol checks the book, but they find drawings of animals.

Bisco says it is a Mushroom Keeper Book and should have various information about mushrooms and the origin of each one. Milo confirms this and locates a page on Rust Eater from Pipe Snake. Tirol offers her assistance as they prepare to board the train. They were attacked by large numbers of oilsquids on the train. However, with their team effort, they managed to defeat them. They arrive at Weeping Child Ravine where Bisco tells them that the Mushroom Keepers had 15 years ago collected a Rust Eater.

They suddenly see a huge Pipe Snake eating a large bird. Bisco decides that he will capture it but Pawoo appears. Bisco confronts her, believing that Milo followed him on his own. But then, the Pipe Snake takes her. Milo saves her but ends up in danger. Bisco and Pawoo join forces to save him. Milo and Bisco are saved by Milo but end up being eaten by the snake. However, Bisco and Pawoo kill the snake from the inside using mushrooms.

Rust Eater was found on the body of Bisco. Bisco tried one but said it felt like an ordinary matsutake. Milo attempts to stop him from continuing his search, but he is hurt. Bisco pushes Milo back and he falls on the Rust Eater, his hand covered in blood. The Rust Eater then glows. Milo discovers that the Rust Eater can be activated by Mushroom Keepers. Kurokawa attacks them, takes the snake and shoots Bisco using a Rust Bullet.

Pawoo then heads to Imihama to deliver the medicine to Jabi. She tells Bisco to give her a rest, reminding him of how she called Milo a beauty and that she now thinks she is cute, making him blush.

Bisco and Milo stay to help Bisco heal. Bisco then heads out to take care of Actagawa. He returns to find Milo acting strangely and discovers that he had put sleepshroom poison into the food. He suspects it is related to Pawoo, and decides to search for her. However, Milo wants to stop him. Milo puts Bisco to sleep and drugs Bisco, declaring that he would risk his life to save Bisco.

Bisco arrives at Shimabuki Base to rescue Milo from Kurokawa just moments before he kills them. Kurokawa tells Kurokawa that he was the one who propagated the belief that Mushroom Keepers spread Rust and that he sold them out to make money and live well. Bisco shatters his prosthetic arm as he tries to shoot him. Kurokawa controls Milo so that he shoots Rustarrows at Bisco.

Milo tells Bisco the secret of Mushroom Keepers blood to save him. Kurokawa then explains that they won’t allow them to live and will hunt him down. Milo is forced to shoot Bisco by Milo, but Bisco manages to catch the arrow and throws it back at Kurokawa. Kurokawa then injures his eye. Jabi arrives and uses a mushroom against Kurokawa.

Kurokawa then sends his pawns after Bisco and the others escape from the base. Jabi remains to fight them while Milo, Bisco and the rest escape but are eventually captured. Kurokawa’s pawns chase Milo and Bisco, shooting multiple Rust Arrows at Milo’s back. Actagawa then defeats them. Milo, who is unconscious and severely injured, tells Bisco that he will live.

Milo wakes up to find that his wounds are healed by Bisco. Bisco then offers to give Milo medicine for the Rust. Milo advises him to inject himself first. But Bisco lies to Milo, saying he did. Milo asks about Jabi, Pawoo and suggests Bisco take Pawoo on a date. But Bisco is nervous and refuses. Milo is about to fall asleep so he asks Bisco to be there for him when he wakes up. Bisco replies that they are partners and will always be together.

Bisco sneaks into Kurokawa’s Miyagi base, pretending to be one of his henchmen. In order to make more money, he listens to Kurokawa’s plan to create artificial Rustwind and increase demand for his medicine. Kurokawa asks Jabi to come along and give him young Mushroom Keepers in exchange for their blood. Jabi declines. Kurokawa unknowingly gives a knife to Bisco and tells him to cut Jabi’s fingers so he can’t use a bow. But Bisco releases Jabi and throws Kurokawa to the floor below.

Bisco tells Jabi that he will destroy the Ganesha Cannon while he cares for Kurokawa. Bisco then goes to battle Kurokawa. Bisco defeats his human experiments as he fights, but his fingers are ruined by the rust and he is unable to use his bow. Kurokawa is able to kill Bisco but he still attacks him, breaking his arm as he punches Kurokawa. Kurokawa thinks he will win and prepares to shoot Bisco.

But Milo, who has been healed from the Rust, comes in time and fires an arrow that rips Kurokawa’s artificial hand. Kurokawa is then pushed down by Bisco into a boiling Rust. Kurokawa eventually dies. Bisco also starts to burn. Milo says he promised them that they would be together. Bisco then tells him that his soul is going to find him. If he smiles as much as Bisco, he will always be there for him when he smiles. Milo agrees to kill Bisco so he doesn’t die from Rust.

Kurokawa is revived as a Tetsujin and Milo fights him several times. However, he still makes it to Imihama. Milo finally manages to climb on the Tetsujin’s back and begins stabbing him, but Bisco’s goggles are there. Milo is then thrown on the Imihama wall by the Tetsujin. Bisco emerges from the stabbing wounds with his arm regrown and healed. He rejoins Milo and takes his goggles back, stating that he heard him in the next universe and returned. Bisco defeats the Tetsujin.

However, each of his arrows makes Rust Eaters which allow him to break the Tetsujin. He is unsure what is happening and feels a surge of power inside him. Milo speculates that he is a mix of human and Rust Eater. He was drenched with the poison from the pipe snake, which causes mushroom spores in his body to enter and mix with his blood. The Tetsujin is bulging and Tirol tells them that it will explode if they attack it. This repeats the previous incident and they must kill the pilot.

Pawoo claims she can easily break the Tetsujin’s helm, but she needs to thank Bisco. He ends up promising that he will give anything she wants if she comes back alive. Pawoo kisses him and says she will take him. The Tetsujin is then attacked by Pawoo, who manages to break his helm and reveal Kurokawa. Bisco and Milo fight the battle, but just as Bisco was about to shoot his arrow, Kurokawa hurls his arm and covers Bisco with blood. Milo helps him aim and tells him to believe. Bisco shoots an arrow, killing Kurokawa as well as the Tetsujin. This kills Kurokawa. Due to the Rust Eater’s effects, Bisco becomes immortal and is forever young. He and Milo decide to embark on a new adventure to cure Bisco.
