Mononoke
Mononoke blends Christie-esque murder mystery and supernatural horror to create a terrifying psychedelic nightmare. Mononoke is a memorable animated film that evokes the 17th-century Japanese ukiyo-e painting style. It’s a psychedelic nightmare. Mononoke features yokai, which are beings from Japanese myth that range from ghosts and demons. They prey on negative emotions.
33. Pokemon
Pokemon was a surprise hit in 1997 and captured millions of people’s hearts. The anime tells the story of Satoshi, a young boy whose dream is to become a Pokemon Master. Satoshi, his loyal friend and rebellious Electric-type Pokémon, embarks on an epic adventure with his faithful partner Pikachu. Together with Takeshi, a Rock-type trainer and Kasumi, a Water trainer, they travel to beautiful areas, where they capture and train a variety of unique creatures known as Pokémon and battle other trainers. They must face Team Rocket, who are determined to steal powerful Pokemon by using nefarious means. This is just part of their journey. To challenge Team Rocket and claim the title Pokemon Master, Satoshi must obtain eight Pokemon Gym Badges.
32. Astro Boy
Astro Boy, the original anime series, first appeared on television in 1963. It has been a hit with fans for decades and is still a beloved classic in animation. After the tragic death of his son Tobio, Professor Tenma is overcome with grief and begins to work on his new project, creating an unyielding robot boy named Atom. Tenma realizes that the robot substitute for Tobio cannot age and so sells Atom to Ham Egg, the cruel ringmaster of an automated circus. Atom’s fate changes when he meets Professor Ochanomizu. He adopts Atom and inspires Atom to be a defender for justice. Later, he builds him a robot brother, Uran.
31. Princess Tutu
The 2002 anime Princess Tutu has a lot of good animation. In a world full of mythical creatures and magic, Ahiru, the charming and delicate character stands out. Despite her awkwardness, she has an inner magic that makes her stand out from the rest. Ahiru is more than a normal girl. She is a transformed duck with the ability to transform into Princess Tutu. She is guided by Drosselmeyer and sets out to find the broken pieces of the prince’s heart. It was once home to an evil raven.
She dances through town as Princess Tutu. She brings people closer to their happy ending with each dance. However, the journey is not easy. Fate has its own agenda and heroes must fight for their happiness.
30. Ranma 1/2
Ranma 1/2, a classic comedy-anime series in martial arts, is first on the list. It premiered in 1989. The story centers on Ranma Saotome (a teenage martial artist who transforms into a girl when he is soaked in cold water). Ranma attempts to overcome his curse, as well as deal with rivals and suitors. The series is filled with hijinks and misunderstandings. This anime was one of the first I ever saw and is still one my favorite. It’s funny and slapstick but also clever and well-timed. All the characters are memorable and relatable. The romance and action are well-done. The English dub is outstanding, featuring some of the most famous voice actors.
29. Slayers
One of the most popular classic anime about fantasy is Slayers, which features a female lead. It aired in 1995 and is produced by E&G Films. There are 26 episodes. Slayers is a series that combines comedy, fantasy, adventure, and comedy. It follows Lina Inverse, a powerful sorceress, as she and her friends battle powerful enemies and discover ancient mysteries. This show is great for its smart dialogue and powerful magical characters.
28. Tenchi Muyo!
Tenchi Muyo, a classic anime series, aired in 1995. Tenchi Masaki is a 17-year old boy who finds an ancient sword that his family has passed down for generations. He accidentally releases a demon when he takes off the blade. This turns out to be Ryouko Hakubi, a space pirate. Tenchi uses the sword’s powers to defend himself and Ryouko becomes interested in him and eventually stays with him. Tenchi is gradually introduced to more alien women with unique personalities. He learns about his heritage and newfound powers as well as the dangers that lie ahead. This show is filled with humor, action, romance, and will delight sci-fi and fantasy fans.
27. FLCL
Although this anime is a classic, it retains its unique visual style with its mix of comedy, action and drama. The story is about Naota Nandaba who is a sixth-grader living in a small town where nothing extraordinary happens. This is until Tasuku, his older brother, leaves the city to play baseball in America. Naota takes care of everything Tasuku has left behind. His ex-girlfriend Mamimi Samejima can’t let go of Naota. Naota is captivated by Haruko Haruhara, a Vespa-riding, pink-haired and bass guitar-wielding woman. Naota is dragged into a battle for supremacy, which not only affects Earth but also the entire universe, after a chance encounter with Haruko.
26. Revolutionary Girl Utena
This classic anime is not to be forgotten. Utena Tenjou is the story of Revolutionary Girl Utena, who suffered from the loss of her parents. A chance meeting with a prince who gifted her a ring bearing a rose emblem made a lasting impression. Utena discovers Anthy Himemiya as a Student Council fought over girl years later. Utena is dragged into Duelists’ world by a miscommunication. She decides to use her princely powers to rescue Anthy and show her true potential as a prince.
25. The Vision of Escaflowne
This fantasy anime is about Hitomi Kanzaki. She’s a young girl who has a passion for prophecy and tarot cards. Van Fanel, a boy from the Netherlands, and a fierce dragon suddenly appear to Hitomi Kanzaki one night. Van defeats the dragon thanks to a premonition. However, a light pillar envelops them both and transports Hitomi to Gaea. She discovers that Van is a prince of the Kingdom of Fanelia which is under threat by the empire Zaibach. Van attempts to defend his kingdom using Escaflowne, his family’s ancient mecha. But Escaflowne is destroyed and the couple are forced to flee. They meet Allen Schezar along the way, a knight that looks very similar to Hitomi from Earth. They fight Zaibach’s attempts to revive an old power. The Vision of Escaflowne, an anime television series from 1996, is known for its stunning animation, beautiful setting, and powerful themes of love and sacrifice.
24. Fist of the North Star
Fist of the North Star is a classic anime from the 1980s. The story is set in a post-apocalyptic wasteland. Kenshirou is a skilled warrior and sets off on a quest to find Shin, his rival who kidnapped Yuria, his beloved fiancée. He uses his powerful fighting form, Hokuto Shinken, to protect the innocent from raiders. His reputation rises, and he is often involved in conflict with rival martial artists and warlords. Despite overwhelming odds, Kenshirou fights for the things that matter most to him, eventually becoming the hero of an irradiated and violent world.
23. Sailor Moon
We have Sailor Moon, a popular animated series for magical girls that aired from 1992 to the present. The story centers on Usagi Tsukino (a schoolgirl who is clumsy, a crybaby and discovers that she is the reincarnation of the warrior Sailor Moon. Usagi, along with her fellow Sailor Scouts fights against the Dark Kingdom’s evil forces. This anime series was a landmark in its day and is still loved today. It introduced the world to the magical girl genre and opened up new avenues for female-led anime.
22. Outlaw Star
Outlaw Star, a nostalgic space western series, aired in 1998. Gene Starwind is a young man who dreams of flying his own spaceship. He’s stuck on Sentinel III doing odd jobs with James Hawking. Their lives change abruptly when Rachel Sweet, a treasure-hunting criminal, hires them to protect Melfina. They embark on an adventure through the galaxy aboard Outlaw Star. There they meet a range of obstacles such as space pirates, dangerous bounty hunters, and powerful mages as they discover the secrets about Melfina. Gene and his crew travel through space to find answers. It’s an exciting adventure that is packed with action.
21. Initial D
Initial D is an iconic anime series that entertained viewers with its street car racing action. The story centers on Takumi Fujiwara who is a normal guy working in a tofu shop and lives a boring life, delivering tofu every day. He soon finds himself in the middle of street racing when the Akagi Red Suns challenge him at the local mountain pass. The Takahashi brothers lead the Red Suns, who plan to conquer all Kanto’s racing courses. However, their plans quickly fall apart when one of their aces gets overtaken. They didn’t know that the Toyota AE86 driver was Takumi, a man who had honed his racing skills from daily mountain deliveries. Takumi must now navigate street racing’s competitive landscape and prove that he is capable of winning.
20. Inuyasha
Inuyasha is the iconic anime series of feudal fantasy that aired from 2000 to now. After being dragged into a well by a demon on her 15th birthday, Kagome Higurashi is taken to feudal Japan. She discovers that she carries the Shikon Jewel, which is a powerful item sought by demons. Inuyasha is a half-demon who initially hates her because of her resemblance to a shrine maiden. They realize the danger they are in and they work together to recover the Shikon Jewel’s broken pieces. They face many obstacles and encounter dangerous creatures along the way as they try to protect the powerful artifact. The romance between Inuyasha & Kagome becomes one of the most beloved and iconic in anime history.
19. Legend of the Galactic Heroes
Legend of Galactic Heroes has been around for more than 30 years, but it’s still one of the most beloved anime series of all time. In a world of interstellar politics, the long-standing balance between the Galactic Empire and Free Planets Alliance is disturbed by the rise of two young leaders: Reinhard von Löhengramm, an ambitious military prodigy, as well as Yang Wenli who is a historian and champion of democracy. Reinhard climbs up the Empire’s ranks and enlists Siegfried Kircheis, his childhood friend, to rescue his sister and overthrow the Goldenbaum Dynasty. 17. Great Teacher Onizuka
GTO: The Great Teacher Onizuka is an iconic school anime series that still attracts audiences today. Eikichi Onizuka is 22 years old and a former leader of a biker gang. He dreams of being the best high school teacher in Japan. Despite his savage, greedy, and lazy nature, Onizuka is determined to be a great teacher. Onizuka is the homeroom teacher for the difficult Class 3-4 at Holy Forest Academy. Although he faces many difficulties, his unique and unpredictable methods allow him to connect with his students and help them. It’s been a long time since the anime was first broadcast in 1999. However, the impact of the anime is still timeless. This makes it an excellent choice for those who want to enjoy an entertaining story about teaching.
16. Mobile Suit Gundam
Mobile Suit Gundam, the iconic anime series, was first broadcast in 1979. It has been a beloved cartoon for many generations. The story tells how a young crew aboard a spaceship with state-of-the-art technology must navigate war-torn battlefields amid the ongoing conflict between the Earth Federation and the Principality of Zeon. The Gundam, a massive humanoid robot controlled by a skilled teenage fighter, is their greatest weapon on this dangerous journey. This crew, which is inexperienced and unable to control the Gundam’s power, must work together to ensure their survival and win the war.
15. Hajime No Ippo
Hajime no Ippo, a popular anime was released in 2000. The series focuses on boxing and follows Ippo Makunouchi’s story as a teenager who helps his mother run their fishing boat rental business. Ippo is bullied and beaten by his classmates, while his father is away. Mamoru Takamura is a rising star of boxing and comes to Ippo’s aid by taking him to the Kamogawa Boxing Gym. Takamura and other gym members notice Ippo’s power and punches that he has honed over years of hard work in the family business.
Genji Kamogawa is the gym’s owner, and Ippo starts his journey into professional boxing. He will face a variety of difficult opponents, each one more difficult than the previous. Ippo is determined to achieve greatness, despite defeats and victories. This kind young man, with his unbreakable spirit as well as powerful punches is ready to conquer the world of boxing.
14. Yu Yu Hakusho
Rewritten: Yu Yu Hakusho, a classic anime from the same creator of Hunter X Hunter, is a timeless classic. This show follows Yuusuke Urameshi’s journey as a 14-year old delinquent who becomes a Spirit Detective after having to sacrifice himself in order to save a child. Koenma, the spirits realm authorities, gives Yuusuke the chance to regain his life. Yuusuke fights evil forces that threaten humanity with the help of Botan, the death god, and his allies, such as Hiei, Kazuma and Kurama.
13. Rurouni Kenshin
If you are an older anime fan, Rurouni Kenshin may be something you have seen before and you know its value. It is worth a look for younger anime fans, who might not be as familiar. Rurouni Kenshin, a classic samurai animation was created in the last years of the Bakumatsu era. Hitokiri Battousai is the hero of the story. He is known for his legendary killing skills. Battousai, however, has since vanished and been renamed Kenshin Himura. He is a wandering swordsman who has a happy demeanor, and a strong desire to protect the weak. He meets Kaoru Kamiya and helps him defeat an impostor who claims to be Battousai. Then he begins to live at her Kendo dojo. Kenshin’s history begins to catch up to him and he must overcome a number of obstacles to protect his new ideals.
12. One Piece
One Piece, a classic anime, is still being shown and has won the hearts of millions worldwide since its debut in 1999. Toei Animation produced the anime series, which has been a huge success and a favorite of many. Monkey D. Luffy is a young pirate who embarks on an epic journey to find One Piece, the legendary treasure. The Pirate King Gol D.Roger once wanted this treasure. His death inspired a new era in pirates searching for the treasure and the title Pirate King.
Luffy, a 17 year-old boy who is full of adventure and has a big heart, embarks on a journey with his team across the Grand Line. They encounter crazy adventures, discover hidden secrets, and face strong foes. Luffy is not the stereotypical pirate. His motivations are pure and full of wonder. He sets out to discover the ultimate treasure and fulfill his dream to become a pirate king.
11. Naruto
Naruto, the beloved anime series, was first broadcast in 2002. It has had a lasting influence on the culture of shonen. Although it has seen many changes over the years, it is still a foundation of anime culture. Naruto’s story begins with the attack of the Nine-Tailed Fox on the Hidden Leaf Village. This is known as the Kyuubi. The Fourth Hokage gives his life in order to save the village.
Despite being rejected and discriminated by the Kyuubi in him, Naruto is optimistic and determined. He is a vibrant and impulsive ninja, who only wants to prove his worth by becoming the Hokage at Hidden Leaf Village. He meets many friends and foes along the way. Each with their own motivations and goals, the journey to his goal turns into an epic tale about friendship, determination and bravery.
10. Neon Genesis Evangelion
Neon Genesis Evangelion is a timeless mecha anime about a world under threat by “Angels”. The only hope of salvation lies in the mysterious organization NERV. The distant Gendou Ikari leads NERV, which uses giant robots called “Evangelions” to fight the Angels. Shinji Ikari is the 14-year old son of Gendou. He returns to Tokyo-3 to discover the truth about his father’s motives. Shinji is forced to take the role of pilot for the Evangelion Unit-01 with the support of Misato Katsuragi (NERV officer). Despite the mental toll, Shinji fights for Tokyo-3 and uncovers the dark secrets of NERV as well as his father’s past.
9. Serial Experiments Lain
Serial Experiments Lain is a cyberpunk classic. It is a classic anime that takes you on an unforgettable journey through complex psychological themes and philosophical themes. This anime is unlike any other you have ever seen. The story of Lain, a shy, introverted 14-year old girl who is entangled in the mysterious world of technology, is told through this psychological thriller anime. Chisa Yomoda, her classmate from high school, sends her an unsettling email. Despite her technological limitations, she finds herself in the Wired, an online world that resembles the internet. Lain encounters strange mysteries as well as men called the Men in Black, who seem to know more than she does about herself. As she experiences surreal events, the lines between reality, virtual and real world blur as she struggles with identity, consciousness, and perception.
8. Monster
Monster is a 2004 anime classic that tells the story about Dr. Kenzou Tenma. He’s a highly skilled neurosurgeon who is on a fast track to success. His world is rocked when he has to make a decision between two patients. He initially switches patients in order to save a well-known performer, rather than a poor immigrant worker. This caused him to have a difficult time with his conscience, and eventually lost his social standing. Years later, Dr. Tenma finds himself in a similar situation and decides to perform surgery on Johan Liebert (a young boy) instead of the mayor. This decision has serious consequences, and Dr. Tenma is forced to resign. However, Dr. Tenma is reappointed as hospital director after the mysterious deaths of the hospital director and the two other doctors. Nine years after saving the life of a criminal, Dr. Tenma must confront the monster and embarks on a journey to avenge the harm done by him.
7. Trigun
Trigun is an anime classic that tells the story of Vash, the Stampede. He is a legendary shooter who has a large bounty on his head. Vash, despite his reputation for being a brutal villain, is actually a gentle and kind person who avoids violence. As he navigates through the treacherous planet Gunsmoke, he is joined by an interesting cast, including Nicholas D. Wolfwood, a gunner priest, and Meryl Stryfe (an insurance agent). This series explores themes such as morality, redemption and action-packed battles. It is a must-watch series for fans of cool characters, dystopian settings, and it’s a must-watch.
6. Hunter X Hunter
Despite being overshadowed in recent adaptations, the original “Hunter x Hunter” anime is a true gem. The gritty, dark atmosphere and unique character design of this anime have given it a special charm and character design. Hunters are an elite group that specialize in many skills, including treasure hunting and cooking. They have access to valuable resources and information that allows them to pursue their passions. The path to becoming a hunter can be treacherous and challenging. One must pass a rigorous and selective exam.
Gon Freecss is a young boy who sets out to find his father. He meets three other hunters along the way: Kurapika, who seeks revenge; Leorio (a doctor-to-be); and Killua (a mischievous youngster of the same age). The Hunter Exam is only the beginning of their adventures. With each new challenge they face, they become stronger and more determined for their goals.
5. Fullmetal Alchemist
Fullmetal Alchemist is back! It’s been almost 20 years since its original airing in 2003. Fullmetal Alchemist (a fantasy action anime series) is about Edward Elric, an alchemist who has experienced great loss. Alphonse and Edward lost their mother through human transmutation when they tried to bring their mother back to life. Edward also lost two of his limbs. Edward uses his alchemy skills in order to attach Alphonse’s soul to an armor suit.
Edward, now called the Fullmetal Alchemist sets out to search for the legendary Philosopher’s Stone with Alphonse one year later. The stone was believed to enhance the abilities of alchemists. It would enable Edward to restore their bodies back to their original state and defeat the law of equivalent exchange. As they dig deeper into their quest, they discover that the stone contains secrets beyond their wildest dreams. This leads them to a more dangerous and darker battle. This is a classic anime series that I recommend to everyone looking for an emotionally strong and well-written series.
4. Dragon Ball
Dragon Ball, one of the most beloved anime series, is still an influential work in shaping our personality to this day. The series was first aired in 1986 and follows Gokuu Son’s adventures with Bulma, who set out to find the seven Dragon Balls. They meet a variety of characters along their journey, including the masterful Master Roshi and the passionate Kuririn who help Gokuu to improve his martial arts skills.
They find themselves in danger as they travel through the world, and they are confronted by powerful villains who want to take advantage of the Dragon Balls for their evil purposes. With each victory, Gokuu’s friends become stronger and learn valuable lessons about friendship and determination. The characters of this epic adventure are bound together by their common desire to protect the Dragon Balls as well as the people they love. They form strong bonds through their adventures and fights. They face every challenge with courage, heart and mind, and are always ready to take on the next challenge.
3. Berserk
Berserk, a 1997 dark classic anime, tells the story of Guts, a skilled soldier who was raised as a mercenary. He quickly rises up the ranks and is soon a trusted member of the Band of the Hawk, a group of soldiers. Things take a dark turn as Griffith, their charismatic leader, becomes more ruthless, and more power-hungry. Guts becomes disillusioned by Griffith’s ambitions and leaves the group. But he soon realizes that Griffith is driven to power, which leads him to make a terrible pact that will lead to a tragedy that Guts couldn’t have imagined. The anime series is an old-school version of Guts’ journey to vengeance. He also struggles with the trauma from his past and the harsh realities that he lives in. It’s a story about violence, power, and the human condition.
2. Death Note
Death Note, a highly-acclaimed anime series that focuses on psychological thrillers, is one of the most popular anime shows. Light Yagami is a high school student who discovers a mysterious notebook which gives him the ability to kill people by writing down their names. He embarks on a quest to create a world free from crime and is pursued by “L” a brilliant detective. In 2006, Death Note was a highly-acclaimed anime series that continues to be a hit with new viewers. The outstanding animation style, memorable music and soundtracks are all reasons for this success. It also tells the epic story of an epic journey into the inner workings of our morals and the consequences that we make.
1. Cowboy Bebop
Cowboy Bebop is a futuristic anime series that has been praised for its stunning animation and futuristic setting. The story takes place in 2071 where humanity has expanded across the galaxy and settlements are similar to those found on Earth. These new societies are plagued with crime including murder, drug abuse, and theft. This world is populated by bounty hunters who hunt intergalactic criminals. Jet Black and Spike Spiegel are two bounty hunters who travel across the galaxy to find their next target. Spike is not the most outgoing and carefree man, but he is burdened by his violent past. Jet struggles with his past and struggles to keep Spike, the Bebop and their ship safe. Faye Valentine (a beautiful con artist), the curious child Edward, as well as Ein, a bioengineered Welsh Corgi, are along for the ride. Spike’s threat threatens the lives of the Bebop crew as they team up to catch criminals. Spike is forced to choose between his family and his desire for revenge when his rival’s sinister plot begins.
