CDProjekt RED, a Polish studio that created the acclaimed The Witcher series, had high expectations for Cyberpunk 2077. The universe in which the game takes place is also a big part of their ambitions. Cyberpunk 2077 seemed impossible to fail. There were many collaborations and projects before the game was released. One of these collaborations was with Netflix and the legendary studio Trigger to create an anime series that is based on the game. Let’s take a look at it and see what it came up with.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is a series of 10 episodes that tells the story of David, an 18-year-old man who is trying to rise to the top of Night City. The story can be read on its own and has nothing to do with the game’s story. David is just like Henry in the movie. He starts out as a normal kid with ambition. Although it all seems familiar, Trigger is able to bring a bit of cyberpunk to the story.

Trigger is able to spice up the story as the season progresses. Although David and Lucy, the femme fatale, are familiar with the story, it is not long before things get out of control. Midway through the season, the story begins to exploit the universe and uses details unique to the setting in order to create truly terrifying and exciting events. Although David and Lucy may not be the most complex characters in anime, they are easy to love and look after, especially during fast-paced action sequences.
Cyberpunk 2077 may still be recovering from the disastrous launch that nearly killed the company. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is a positive start. This series could even introduce a new audience for the game. That would be amazing because the game is now and not when it launched. These video game adaptations have been a huge success on Netflix. Animation seems to be the best way to bring these franchises to life on the big screen.
