Dark Season 3 ending Explained

The massively complex third season of Netflix’s hit has come to an end. As expected, the finale was just as epic and mind-blowing as it should have been. Fans are still asking for answers in true fashion. We tried our best.

Trip to another universe

Alternate Martha’s universe is where we spend a lot. Winden reminds us of the small German village that we have come to know from previous seasons. This alt-Winden turns out to be almost identical to our Winden. Things happen in different ways and at different times but the same result happens. Ulrich follows Helge back through time believing that he is involved in Mads’s disappearance. However, Ulrich returns to 1986 and attacks Helge like an adult and not as a young boy. He also leaves his eye disfigured and his ear swollen. In an alternate universe, Ulrich leaves Katharina for Hannah to have an affair with Charlotte Doppler.

Alt-Winden’s biggest difference is that Mikkel has never been back in time. Therefore, his son Jonas/Adam does not exist in this universe. But that doesn’t mean people aren’t moving chess pieces around in the fight with time. Alt-Winden’s Adam is replaced by a mysterious Eve, which turns out to be alt-Martha. Both worlds are tied together by a knot, which perpetuates the endless cycle we’ve seen. Adam would like to end the knot, ending all the suffering and tragedy. Eve however wants to keep the knot.

Why is Eve so determined to keep the knot?

We need to answer this question by talking about Adam and Eve’s belief that the moment at which the knot was formed (a.k.a. The specific event that triggered the time loops. Alt-Martha saves Jonas and they have sex together. They also get pregnant. Their son, born in both universes, grows up to be the root of Winden’s very knotty family tree. As a young man, Agnes Nielsen hooks him up with him, and they give birth to Tronte. (Tronte becomes Ulrich’s father and Jonas and alt-Martha’s child is their ancestor. He is Jonas’s great-great-grandfather and Martha’s great-grandfather.) Adam and Eve spend a lifetime studying the loops. They finally decide that their son, the bridge between the two worlds, is the origin point for the knot.

Adam wants to prevent his son from ever becoming a father, ending the cycle of tragedy and destroying the knot. Martha wants to protect her child, so she feels she must keep the knot and all the cycles intact. Adam and Eve constantly try to outmaneuver each other to get what they want. One reality is that Adam kills Martha. Their child is born in another reality. We see him as an adult, a child and an old man, doing Eve’s bidding and manipulating people to keep the knot.

How Jonas and Alt-Martha saved the world

Adam arrives in the universe just moments before the apocalypse. He finds Jonas grieving over Martha’s death and gives him the information needed to stop the madness. Alt-Martha and he can travel to the origin universe to save Tannhaus and their family. The knot will not exist. This Jonas version travels to the timeline to stop alt-Martha saving Jonas. He then switches on his time-machine and whisks her away, before Magnus, Franziska and others recruit her to Team Adam. These versions of Jonas & alt-Martha never met but feel deeply connected by fate, destiny, and love.

Here’s the plan: Jonas must wait in the tunnels until Tannhaus makes time travel possible in the origin universe. They are able to travel through time bridges into the origin universe at that moment. It is beautiful but also wild. They travel back to the accident scene and stop Tannhaus and his daughter-in-law driving off to their death. Tannhaus has no reason to continue building his machine, even though his family is still alive. The other universes never exist. It works! It works! All of the people involved in the wedding and all other universes start to fade away. Jonas and Martha hold hands, as light flickers from existence. This is emotional.

The Origin World

Claudia (Julika Jenkins), a person who was not connected to the Nielsen family tree, discovered a third world between the two initial worlds in Dark. She named it the Origin World, because it is, as you might guess, the ‘real’ world.

You might have seen the term ‘Origin’ mentioned in the series. The Origin had to be destroyed in order to cause the loop and knot to stop.

Origin was born out of a car accident, in which HG Tannhaus (Christian Steyer’s) son, daughter and granddaughter were killed. Tannhaus then decided to create and use a time machine to try to save them.

Jonas realizes that he is stuck in a cycle that will last forever. Each character in this cycle is doomed not to repeat the same mistakes over again. Jonas realizes that he keeps trying to bring on the apocalypse.

Jonas (Lisa Vicari), and Martha (Lisa Vicari), discover from Claudia that there is a time when time can be stopped and the Origin World visited. They then time travel through Winden to June 1986. They prevent car crashes deaths, and Tannhaus creates the time machine. However, they also wipe out their own worlds.

It almost seems like being in this place is a black hole, void in which Jonas or Martha are sent to in an inexistent place.

The Nielsen family tree in Origin World was never created and the events of the previous two seasons never actually happened.

Is that the end of Martha and Jonas?

Technically, no. They have been completely extinguished from all forms of existence. They cease to exist and they no longer need to die. They imagine what it might mean to see their childhood selves, and then they hold hands as they vanish from existence while ‘What a Wonderful World’ plays in the background – sob.

They managed to destroy the knot so it wasn’t just Jonas or Martha who were destroyed. Every character in Adam’s and Eva’s world now ceases to exist because of this.

The Final Scene

In the final scene, a group of characters enjoys a dinner party at Winden’s modern-day restaurant. Peter Doppler (Stephan Kampwirth), Hannah Kahnwald, Katharina Nielsen and Benni (Anton Rubtsov), were all there. Torben Woller and Leopold Hornung were also present. They were the only ones to survive with Adam and Eva’s world ending. These characters are not a result of time travel.

Regina (Deborah Kaufmann), has not died from cancer. Hannah is pregnant, although her partner Mikkel is no longer with us. Peter seems happy with his transgender partner, and not Charlotte – since she doesn’t really exist.

A Glitch

It is strange to feel that, even though the other worlds don’t exist anymore, it has had a profound effect on the lives of those who do. Hannah speaks of having “deja vu” or something, and she wears the same yellow coat as Jonas. Hannah is asked which name she would like for her unborn child, and she responds with an emotional last line: “I think Jonas’ is a beautiful title.”

Jonas and Martha referred to deja vu previously as a “glitch in Matrix” – meaning that, even though the characters have been erased from existence, certain things cannot be predicted. Instead, they are determined by the system or a higher power. Despite Jonas’ and Martha’s efforts to ensure that events don’t repeat themselves, certain things are predestined.

For the moment there is no announcement about the release date of Dark season 4 on Netflix. Dark season 3 will be the final season of the show. Most of the show’s central mysteries have been solved by the end of this episode. Although it’s Winden’s last appearance on the screen, eight hours of pure Dark storytelling are offered. There are many twists, time travel theories that can break your brain, heartbreaking revelations, and brain-breaking moments. Dark is a show that can offer the same quality of thematic synthesis and storytelling as. It’s sad to see it go but it’s great that it ended on its own terms.

Netflix Does Not Plan to Renew Dark Season 4

When season 3 was first announced, series creator Baran Bo Odar stated that it would be the final season. A show with so many twists, turns and stories could find a way to go on past its last episode. Dark has explored the time paradoxes and their consequences on four families trapped in a time loop. While one story may have been resolved, Dark is not stopping Dark creating a parallel universe or loop. The events of the previous season might have happened in another dimension or in a different timeline. A show that allows time travel exists opens up the possibility of infinite variations, alternate realities, time-travel shenanigans, and many more. If the creators of the show have a great idea and an interesting angle to explore why not return to Winden? Or perhaps even bring the same characters into a different universe? This is Dark for now.

‘Dark’ Review All Seasons Before Season 4

“Dark”‘s greatest trick is the way it makes everything inevitable. Every new twist in the sci-fi time-travel epic has been greeted with shock and the storytelling confidence that this was always the way it would be. “Dark” manages a complex web of causal loops, concurrent timelines, and logical paradoxes. He has always done this with the right combination of precision and patience to ensure that each detail feels earned. The construction of Winden’s story felt like a ticking clock.

The new season opens with a blisteringly funny reworking the Winden. This may be the first of 18 chapters. The ripple effects of the events that brought Mikkel Nielsen (Daan L. Liebrenz) back in the time period to become Jonas’ father Michael Kahnwald are not as troubling. The immediate family of Ulrich (Oliver Masucci), Katharina (Jordis Triebel), is essentially the same. However, without the former being trapped in time to pursue Mikkel, it’s fascinating to see how all that extra energy is channeled. It’s a case of reflection and refraction that spans the entire community.

Part “It’s a Wonderful Life,” and part flash sideways, “Dark Season 3” indulges in the wonders of this alternate timeline for just enough time to allow it to be fully appreciated before examining the consequences. Jantje Friese, Baran bo Odar and Baran Bo Odar are wise to recognize that despite all the speculation about fates and cross-generational dots-connecting the show’s success, its focus on character is what makes it so special. If intricate narrative puzzles are treated as pieces, rather than people, then a mystery can eat up all the surrounding elements. Season 3’s most important new character is “Dark”, but each Winden mainstay has a chance to confront their role in this moral dilemma.

The first two seasons felt like an operatic struggle between fate and free will. Season 3’s ongoing drama has more defined figures than ever before. These two sides swing in a pendulum that could become repetitive. A few episodes of the final collection have some unexpected reappearances as well as confusing allegiances. This is all in keeping with the one consistent, impressive element of the “Dark”, which is hyperfocused on every moment while not losing sight of the series’ overall trajectory. There’s space to let go of your older and younger selves when you meet them face-to-face. You can see how the terror of one version meets the confusion of the other. “Dark” uses the characters’ journeys to reflect the audience as much as possible. Season 3 combines all these elements and feels like an extension of the ethical dilemmas and psychological issues that Friese and her cowriters have been grappling with since the beginning. “Dark” discovers a common thread in the idea of doing what is best for those we love, despite the many diabolical plots and competing motivations. It’s difficult to believe that saving a child or fighting for your soulmate could be wrong, even if there is a lot of evidence. “Dark”‘s most powerful villain is the cruelty of a logic that somehow punishes people who try to correct their mistakes.

While the ending of the series and season seem more certain as the full extent of this philosophical struggle becomes apparent, it’s still thrilling to see these people plunge into the unknown. The future travelers are unsure what to include in their reports to their younger counterparts. The petrified teenager who grabs the hand of the cross-dimensional messenger insisting they follow is another example. It’s the same for all characters in this story who, when confronted with the impossible, reply with something other than rejection. “Dark” has performed a high-wire act in three of the most exciting sci-fi TV shows ever. It is worth reminiscing about the moment it crossed the chasm, with all its ambitions and techniques intact.

Agnes Nielsen is Ulrich Nielsen’s grandmother. Tronte Nielsen is Ulrich’s biological father. It isn’t confirmed that Agnes is Agnes’ biological mother. Jonas is Ulrich’s grandfather.

These include Regina Tiedemann and Aleksander Tiedemann (also known as Boris Niewald) along with their son Bartosz. Regina’s mother Claudia Tiedemann is believed to be missing because she went time-travelling in the 80s. Claudia is the daughter of Egon Tiedemann and Doris Tiedemann. Silja and Bartosz are married. They have a son that Silja calls Hanno. We know that Hanno is Noah’s real name, so Bartosz is Noah.

This includes Peter Doppler, Charlotte Doppler, and their children Franziska & Elisabeth. Peter’s father, Helge Doppler is his father. His parents are Bernd Doppler and Greta Doppler. The nuclear power-plant at Winden was started by Bernd Doppler. Noah is Charlotte Doppler’s dad. Elisabeth, Charlotte’s mother, is also her daughter. She and Noah had a relationship after the apocalypse. They also had a baby.
