The series is also known under the name “The Bisque Doll That Fell in Love”, My Dress-Up Darling is a manga comic which was published in 2018 by Square Enix’s Young Gangan. It was written and illustrated by Shinichi Fukuda. The story centers around Wakana Gojo and Marin Kitagawa. Gojo is an apprentice hina doll maker while Marin was looking to cosplay her favorite anime and video game characters.

When Marin was aware of Gojo’s talents, she was not hesitant to ask him to create costumes for her. Gojo, who has been sewing doll outfits for his entire life, was not certain what he could do. 

Her determination to succeed was inspiring, and in the end, Gojo agreed. The series was the focus of manga and anime enthusiasts alike. Now the question is: whether the manga of My Dress-Up Darling completed or is it still in progress?

Is My Dress-Up Darling Manga Complete, Finished or Ongoing? Current Status

At the time of writing, the manga is continuing. There have been eight volumes that have been released to date and the most recent volume was released on the 25th of October 2021.

The initial six volumes have an English version, while the other two are currently in development. They are available in English. English versions are released under the name of Square Enix Manga & Books.

The popularity of My Dress-Up Darling‘s manga was not a joke. The year it was published, it earned sixth spot on the “Comics category” on the fourth edition of Tsugini the kuru Manga Taisho. Then in 2020 it earned 3rd place in Honya’s Nationwide Bookstore Employee’s Recommended Comics 2020.

These accomplishments could be one of many reasons CloverWorks decided to make this manga into an animated series. The show premiered in 2022. What makes My Dress-Up Darling so appealing to viewers is that it breaks gender stereotypes.

Marin and Gojo’s tastes aren’t what people who watch anime can anticipate. Gojo is in love with a Hina doll, and is aspiring to be a craftsman for hina dolls, while Marin is into sexually explicit videos and anime. Marin added that one’s tastes shouldn’t be restricted to one’s gender.

Personally, I’d suggest going through the manga beginning from the beginning, to observe how certain scenes were handled differently in anime. It’s always a pleasure as a fan to be in a position to observe how the show improved over scenes that are already fantastic or areas you think it could have been better. The animators of studio CloverWorks performed an excellent job in the debut season. I hope that there will be more in the future.
