In Aot, Gelgar was a member of the Survey Corps. He was selected by Mike Zacharius as one of the soldiers to oversee the #104 Recruit Troop.

In Aot, Gelgar was an average-sized man. Also, Gelgar had masculine, gallant features. His hair was blond and combed upwards. He wore the Scout Corps standard uniform.

Gelgar was loyal to his cause. He trusted his superiors completely and did not follow Mike when he was acting as bait. He attacked in the open, praised Nanaba, and expressed his exaggerated love for alcohol.
STORY
ARCH OF THE TITANS SHOWDOWN
Gelgar was with his group (Nanaba, Henning, Lynne, and Lynne) as well as his officer Mike Zacharius, who were assigned to oversee Cycle Recruitment Troop #104, suspected accomplices of Annie Leonhart.
They discover that the Rose Wall is inhabited by titans as they begin their investigation. Mike directs his group to divide into four teams to alert nearby towns about the danger. Gelgar was in charge of the south squad. His group meets Nanaba’s group, which was moving in the opposite direction. He and his group take refuge at Castle Utgard when night falls. Numerous titled men were also killed that night.
Later in the night, many titans that can move during the night will appear. He and the other titans must take care of Annie Leonhart‘s suspected accomplices.
Gelgar and Nanaba decide to take charge and fight the titans. Gelgar realizes that his swords are worn out and that he is unable to fight the titans. He gives in to his need to rest and lets himself fall. He is captured by a titan and later killed by Nanaba. After falling in one of the castle rooms, he discovers the bottle of wine he had wanted before his death. When he attempts to drink the wine, he discovers that it is empty. At that point, he demands to know the source of the wine. Nanaba attempts to save him, but she is also eaten.
ARC OF RETURN to SHIGANSHINA
Erwin was reminded of his delusions from his days as a conscript to his present persona. He now sits at the head of a legion of soldiers, inciting them all to love humanity and on the top of a mountain of bodies of people he led to their deaths. The only bodies that can be seen among these bodies are those of Mike and Nanaba.
