Analysis of God’s Creatures

On this seaside drama, Emily Watson does an ideal job of telegraphing the battle between a mother’s love and her moral code.

“God’s Creatures,” a spare, atmospheric drama, opens underwater. A burst of bubbles is seen and a muffled sound can be heard. The image then cuts to the ocean surface where gentle wavelets disguise the turbulence below.

This is also true for the isolated Irish fishing village in which the film is set. Though the story opens with a drowning, the residents of the area are in good spirits. They can be seen enjoying the townie bar, picking oysters for the market, or listening to Sarah Franciosi’s angelic vocals. Nevertheless, the haunting score and slow, forbidding photographs of the landscape indicate that there is evil nearby.

Aileen (Emily Watson) is a loving mother and factory worker who works alongside Sarah on an assembly line. Her prodigal son Brian (Paul Mescal), arrives home unexpectedly after years of living abroad. Aileen is thrilled to see her golden child again, but a terrible crime forces her to question her relationship with him.

Saela Davis (“The Matches”) and Anna Rose Holmer (“The Directors”) are both skilled engineers of dread. The news spreads throughout the town and creates a chasm between Sarah and Aileen. The filmmakers help us to navigate it with a sequence of sinister sounds, images, and sound effects. Every maritime mundanity hears the clacking-clacking of oysters dropping into buckets, and feels either pain or terror.

“God’s Creatures,” in the end, is a film about the conflict between a mother’s fidelity to her son and her moral conscience. Watson does an ideal job of showing how these instincts work against each other to scary ends. The power she wields, even in a simple story that sometimes lacks psychological clarity, is evident.

God’s Creatures Finale explained

Paddy passes away and Sarah comes to his funeral. Con and Erin are both offered her condolences, but she chooses not to say anything to Aileen. Her response to Brian is more severe. She spits on him and Aileen intervenes to stop Sarah from being hurt. Brian then takes a young woman as his date that night.

Aileen is fed up and approaches the women and politely requests that they go home. Con intervenes and Brian responds angrily. Aileen must take her husband home by herself after they have a scuffle in public. She returns to Brian’s oyster farm the next day. Aileen is reluctant to admit her own fault to the prodigal son, so she decides to let her motherly love go for good.

Brian is told by her to leave their family. She then walks to the boat, wading through the tide. Brian doesn’t know this and it is too late when he tries to walk towards it. Aileen hears her son’s cry for help but decides to let nature punish Brian instead. Brian is swept away in the strong tide.

After a funeral, life resumes normality after a few days. Aileen learns that Sarah has left town and decides to go to her. Sarah apologizes to her and asks her to come back. However, Sarah believes that her time in this small fishing community is over. She distinctly remembers listening to her parents argue in her home, followed by her mother’s crying. Sarah also says she heard the wind make the same whistling sound while she was in a relationship with Brian.

Though it was over, she still hears the same sound. She has come to realize that patriarchal inhibitions are embedded in the air. Sarah leaves the scene in her car with this realization and feels a quiet joy.

How does Aileen deal with the dilemma?

Brian returns home and begins to rebuild the oyster farm with the help of his parents. It is not known what exactly Brian did in Australia or why he left the country. The way he thinks and acts raises questions about his past. One might even question whether he ever went to Australia. Brian also attempts illegal methods resembling trading salmon and even harvesting oysters when it is not legal.

He appears to be involved with local henchmen or thugs who run illegal businesses and take the earnings from authentic fishing boats. While he talks to his mother about various things, he never mentions anything about his past. Sarah meets her son and mother at the local pub one night. The young woman had a fantastic singing voice, and was also known for having a difficult relationship with Francine, a fish vendor.

Sarah and Brian were in a romantic relationship seven years ago. Brian now sees Sarah in the pub and greets her with kind words. Soon, it becomes apparent that he wants to rekindle his old romance. Sarah however quickly informs him that she does not have such an interest. Aileen decides to return home with Brian, perhaps feeling that it is best for her and the situation.

Aileen notices Sarah acting out and keeps it to herself at work the next morning. When a batch of oysters with fungus is discovered, the work slows down. Sarah falls to her knees as everyone attempts to respond to this news. Aileen, Sarah’s colleague, rushes to her rescue and tries to lift her up. Sarah insists that she not touch her.

Sarah doesn’t show up at work for the next few days. Aileen begins to suspect that something is not right. It is easy to put together the events and work out what happened. Aileen is aware of this, but might choose to ignore it and wait for someone to tell her.

Several days later, she is asked to go to the local station by the police. She learns that Brian has been assaulted by a woman and is asked about her whereabouts. Aileen’s report dates and places match her night in the pub together with her son. Her first instinct is to save Brian.

According to her, Brian spent the night and evening at their home, just as he had claimed. He also said that he had not left the house at all. She soon questions Brian about the incident, but her tone is not confrontational. Instead, she appears to be supportive of her son regardless. Brian explains how they got drunk, but he claims it wasn’t much different than the things they did when they were together.
