Based on Sun Wukong, a character from the Chinese classic Journey to the West (16th Century), and influenced by the Hong Kong martial art films of Jackie Chan, he is now known as Son Goku. Goku made his debut in Bulma and Son Goku’s first Dragon Ball chapter, originally published in Japan’s Weekly Shonen Jump Magazine on December 3, 1984. Son Goku, from his original name, Kakarot, is a Saiyan born on Planet Vegeta. He was sent to Earth by his parents when their planet was about to be destroyed. The infant is found by Son Gohan upon his arrival on Earth. He becomes the adopted grandfather and gives the boy the name Goku. The boy’s Saiyan nature causes him to be violent and aggressive at first, but then an accidental head injury makes him a happy, carefree individual. Goku is influenced by Grandpa Gohan’s teachings and kindness, and later on he names his first child Gohan after him.

Goku almost looks exactly like his father. He has the same dark hair, dark eyes and facial features. He has more gentle eyes and a calm demeanor than his mother. His hair is the most distinctive physical characteristic of Goku. Goku’s hair is a triangular arrangement with three bangs to his forehead to the right and two bangs to the left. His hair stands straight up in front, with four spikes and three bangs at the back. Later in the anime, he had five spikes in front and four at the back. Goku was born with the trademark tail of the Universe 7 Saiyans. It was long, prehensile and had brown fur. In his childhood, it was removed and regrown several times. However, in his teens, Goku’s tail was permanently removed by Kami to stop his Great Ape transform.

Even though it is only a few short months between the Future Trunks and the Universe Survival stories, the events in Dragon Ball Super: Broly do show that Goku should be old again.
