Review

The show’s exploration into the unpredictable nature of human behavior during an epidemic is admirable and quite believable. There are prejudices and fear of the Other, ineffective and corrupt politicians, desperate people trying to escape Seattle in the event of an epidemic; people trying to flee from terminal illnesses; people trying to get into Seattle to avoid becoming

infected; and even a bizarre religious cult of zombies. Our central group of would-be heroes is caught up in all the ethically difficult complications and trying to make the best moral choices under the most difficult circumstances.

In the fifth and final season, there is a welcome return of the case-of-the-week format. This gives the writers the chance to have lots of fun with Liv’s personality shifts and inventive brain recipes. Liv on murdered dancer brain is particularly charming, as she coerces Ravi (who can’t dance) into going undercover for a competition. This yields a clever Dirty Dancing-meets-Footloose montage as Liv and Clive try to teach Ravi some moves.

iZombie Season 5: Recap and Ending

iZombie has always been a big-hearted network when it comes to its season finales. “All’s Well That Ends Well” was the perfect example of this. The series finale wasn’t epic but it didn’t mean that it wasn’t a bit bizarre and hokey. The finale was determined to have its cake and eat it too. It wanted to raise the stakes in its zombie-fied world while not actually addressing any of the inevitable consequences for its main characters. Although it was quite enjoyable, it made for a disconcerting and bizarre finale.

What happened in the finale of the iZombie series? Much, Reader. The number of characters who mistakenly believed that other characters were dead was quite Shakespearean. (No one answered their phones during the Battle for Seattle.) It was first Ravi and Liv that thought Peyton was dead. Blaine’s minion shot her after she was being a complete badass, saving the Freylich children from Blaine. She and Clive will be my heroes forever.

Blaine actually scratched her before any life could drain from her, giving her undead existence so that she would live another day. This episode was the first to have its stakes lowered. A trend that would last throughout the entire episode. We don’t know much about Blaine’s motivations. Is he still in love with Peyton? He doesn’t appear capable of loving. Is this his ultimate goal? I found this a case of plot dictating character.

Blaine’s arc was put on the back burner here. Maybe that’s okay? Culturally, we spend too much time trying to understand and empathize with bad guys. Perhaps it’s better to just push them into a well. This is what Don E does to Blaine after he discovers (via Peyton in another badass moment), that Blaine killed Darcy. Don E was already having a meltdown with Blaine after realizing earlier that Blaine would never be loyal to him the same way he had been to Blaine.

Later, Liv appears to send Don E down that same well. This is a fitting end, as these two evil men are stuck together for eternity in the same well where they held their enemies. Although I don’t know what iZombie is trying to convey with this, it is one of the most plausible and fitting endings for a chapter that has many bizarre endings.

Major was the second major character fakeout to die. This is in keeping with the continuing trend that all Liv’s boyfriends will eventually die. (I kid, I kid!) First, Major enters Filmore Graves as a result of Frenchie’s totalitarian rule. Enzo claims he will let Major fight to save the zombie cause. However, I don’t believe anyone (characters and viewers) believes him. This is because Major also comes into the facility under false pretenses. Ravi needs him to steal the Max Rager.

While Major may be walking into a not-even-really-veiled trap, he still has people loyal to him on the inside (frankly, I can’t keep all of these supporting characters straight!) One of them saves Major’s life at the expense of her own. Major escapes and Ravi develops the cure. But they need a way for the public to see it. They discover that YouTube is not used in New Seattle so they go to local TV to try and convince Johnny Frost (who gets the funniest line in the episode: “I am not even the most famous Zombie in this six-foot radius.”), to live stream the cure.

Johnny Frost fails to do it but he heroically announces that he is one before Enzo’s armed minions enter the news station and take him down. The broadcast resumes with Enzo making his dictatorial announcement. Major interrupts the broadcast and announces that Major has a plan. Major will inject himself with the cure, then Enzo can shoot him.

It’s a dumb plan. It’s designed to counter any online arguments that iZombie fans might have about plot holes in the series finale. (To which I reply: This isn’t Game of Thrones… thank you). Ravi also thinks it’s stupid. We are unaware that he gave Major a fake cure to ensure that he survived. Ravi then tackles Enzo and gives him the cure. The dude who was a mole at Renegade’s camp and kidnapped Enzo’s boyfriend, then shoots Enzo. (There are so many supporting cast members that I don’t care about on this series.)

IZombie Season 6 Release date

We can expect the developers to renew the season soon, given the positive feedback received for the first five seasons.
