Mikan Tsumiki was a character from the role-playing game Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair. She was the “Ultimate Nurse”. She is currently in an in-patient coma as a result of “Despair Fever”. Similar to Komaeda, she is one of Ultimate Despair.

Mikan Tsumiki’s Personality

Mikan Tsumiki is a remarkably quiet, fragile, paranoid, and vulnerable person who has dangerously low self-esteem because of intense bullying. The result is a myriad of behavioral issues, such as becoming easily intimidated, falling down and crying without prompting, profusely apologizing, and often stuttering in a nervous manner when speaking. She worries constantly about being boring, annoying, or offending other people. She even asks Hajime Hinata to allow her to recall his name while introducing herself. Her delicate nature is the perfect match for Hiyoko Saionji’s instinctively cruel and predatory personality.

Like her talent suggests, Mikan is decently knowledgeable and intelligent. She generally desires to be loved by other people and assist them. However, her lack of confidence and desire to avoid being a nuisance results in her not being able to speak up or express her opinions in a public forum. If she needs to do so, she’ll likely request permission from her fellow classmates to express her feelings. This is especially evident when it comes to Class Trials, where despite her abilities being extremely helpful in solving murders, she doesn’t usually speak out of her own volition.

Maybe because of her extensive knowledge of human physiology, Mikan is very adept at recognizing faces of people. However, she tends to over-analyze the faces of people and quickly thinks that she is not liked by her peers. Contrary to what her expertise would typically entail, and possibly due to her constant anxiety, Mikan is extraordinarily clumsy to the point that she is constantly falling over herself and frequently ending up in dangerous positions after falling to the ground. This, along with the majority of her mistakes, however innocuous or accidental, is the reason she always apologizes.

Mikan Tsumiki’s Appearance

She has long, choppy dark purple hair that has been cut in a variety of ways due to bullies. She has light, grayish-purple eyes. There’s a beauty mark that is located under the corner of her left eye. She wears a nurse’s uniform consisting of a light pink, collared short-sleeved t-shirt with puffy sleeves.

Mikan wears a white apron that is tied around her neck by an elastic. Two red lines are visible on the left of the apron. One that runs towards her middle and a second, shorter red line that is perpendicular to the vertical line. A thin pleated skirt can be seen under her apron. Mikan wears bandages around the majority part of her left arm as well as her right leg. Also she has a bandage to her right kneecap. She is wearing white socks and white shoes.

In her time in high school, she wore the Hope’s Peak Academy uniform. A band-aid was on her cheek, and bandages wrapped around her left leg and right knee.

In her role as the Ultimate Despair, she is dressed in white nursing attire and a headband. There are bandages on her left and right leg. She wears an elbow-length glove on her left hand and a glove on her right hand, which will only go up to the wrist that is bandaged.

Mikan Tsumiki’s Background

Mikan Tsumiki lived a tough childhood. She was physically, emotionally, as well as sexually abused by those in her family, as well as other places like school. There were other instances where she told of being splashed with water, covered in mud, and even burned by cigarettes. Bullies used to beat her with their bare hands, strip her hair and draw upon her, make her an opponent in darts, make her accountable for their debts and instruct her to eat bugs, and interpret certain animals.

They even instructed her to strip at certain times. Furthermore, she was not socialized with any friends. In the end, Mikan became a very timid person who believed that it’s more appropriate to be treated less than to be completely neglected. She was afraid of being ignored and loneliness more than abuse, and allowed people to take whatever they want in her presence.

Since nobody was there around to take charge of her injuries, Mikan learned to take charge of herself at an early age. As she became proficient in this field, she began to become interested in nursing. She realized that she had a sense of control over injured and sick people, as the weaker had to rely on her totally and their lives depended on her.

She was a student at the Lapis Lazuli Girls High School before she enrolled at Hope’s Peak Academy as the Ultimate Nurse in class 77-B. It seemed that her life was beginning to improve as she made friends with her first group of friends: Ibuki, Hiyoko, Mahiru Koizumi, and Sato. While they were together, they found a body inside the musical room. The corpse was later found to be Fuyuhiko’s sister who was killed by Sato. After a few days, Sato was killed by Fuyuhiko. Hiyoko recommended that Mikan be allowed to enter the school in which Mikan discovered Sato’s body. The details of Mikan’s past were exposed during the film “Twilight Syndrome Murder Case”.

Pre-Despair

Death

When she is found to be guilty of murdering Mioda and Saionji, the execution starts. Mikan is discovered in a bed in the hospital and is waiting for nurses. A man wearing the costume of a nurse picks up the syringe. Monokuma quickly walks around with the needle. Once he is at Tsumiki, he stabs her bed. As he does this, the walls collapse and the bed transforms into an arm. Monokuma will rapidly inject liquid into the arm. This would later transform into a rocket. The arm then travels across the sky and into space carrying Mikan. When the rocket sinks into space, Monokuma is thrown down face first wearing the nurse’s outfit. It comes to an end.

Mikan Tsumiki’s Relationships

Hajime Hinata

Mikan is easily agitated whenever she meets Hajime. She will apologize, or even cry in the event that she upsets Hajime. Hajime does not know what she’s doing to make her feel so shy and timid, until she revealed to Hajime about her previous experiences. This could strengthen their relationship. Mikan has been seen sleeping with Hajime many times. In fact, she’s been known to choke Hajime.

Hiyoko Saionji

Throughout the entire game prior to Hiyoko’s death, Mikan was physically and verbally victimized by Hiyoko. She’s been called a junky, skank, and snob, and numerous other insults. In fact, she’s prone to crying when she is humiliated. That resulted in her death when she accidentally came upon Mikan’s plans to kill Ibuki. Mikan, trying to take down Ibuki, was then able to have her throat cut by Mikan.

Ultimate Imposter

Although the two have never had a conversation during games, Mikan’s involvement and The Ultimate Imposter is exposed within Danganronpa 3 – Despair Arc. The Imposter occupied Ryota’s spot in the class, and was able to not reveal this information to anyone. But when Ryota begins to abandon his medical condition, the imposter has to reveal his secrets with Mikan to convince her to help. The Imposter, however, was not concerned about sharing his secrets with Mikan, with full confidence in her. Mikan accepted that he keep the secret. The Imposter was extremely kind to Mikan and helped her become more confident, due to her timid nature. Since she had not experienced this type of treatment frequently, Mikan instantly took an attraction to him and the two became friends.

Ryota Mitarai

A fellow in class 77-B at Hope’s Peak School. Mikan took care of Ryota on behalf of the Imposter and helped him return to his health. It seems that the two are close friends since the incident. But, after Junko is able to brainwash Mikan without Ryota having any idea, she sets out to sexually assault him, damaging him during the process. Their relationship ends because of this and Mikan is a part of The Ultimate Despair whereas Ryota joins the Future Foundation.

In the end, Ryota shows guilt over his involvement as a participant in the brainwashing process of Mikan. After Mikan was healed of her brainwashing, Ryota decides to quit his position at the Future Foundation, and reside on Jabberwock Island with the former Remnants of Despair. Their friendship eventually healed.

Fuyuhiko Kuzuryu

Mikan Tsumiki was also verbally and physically abused significantly more violently by Fuyuhiko and Mahiru. For instance, when she relates the injuries on the body of the victim, Fuyuhiko is threatening her extremely abusively, threatening to kill her, causing Mikan to cry and scream and causing Mahiru and Sonia to defend her.

The third chapter begins Fuyuhiko’s behavior has changed following Peko’s sacrifice and Mikan was made the one to blame and starts to yell in anger at anyone, verbally and physically accusing her of being the culprit and blaming her for all the wrongs in her life. As also begging repeatedly to be accepted as a victim, Fuyuhiko reacts and somewhat stumbles and stutters, putting a smirk on his face. He then informs her that she’s been emotionally unstable.

Chiaki Nanami

Chiaki is the first who allowed Mikan to play video games and had fun while remaining in a calm state. In one episode that is part of Danganronpa 3 – Despair Arc, Chiaki is then brainwashed. Mikan apologizes to Chiaki while Chiaki is confused and tries to lead Chiaki into a hidden access point. At the end of the day, Mikan regrets the whole situation and joins with her classmates in urging Ryota from uploading an uplifting video that brainwashes her.

Mikan Tsumiki’s Talents & Abilities

Ultimate Nurse

Since it was impossible for anyone else to take care of her injuries, Mikan Tsumiki learned to take her own care from an early age. As she got better at this, she began to take an interest in nursing, realizing that it provided her with the feeling of being in control over injured and sick people, as the weaker ones had to rely on her 100% and their lives were in her hands.

Her expertise in this field continued to improve and she appeared to have developed all the essential skills and capabilities needed by nurses like being able to provide first-aid, preparing different medicines and drugs, being competent in performing surgeries and analyzing her patients’ condition at a moment’s alert and the ability to adapt when dealing with emergency medical situations.

As the Ultimate Nurse, Mikan’s knowledge of medicine can be beneficial in the case of murder. She offers autopsy reports which include information on the deceased’s condition, information on injuries, the reason for death and the time of death. In addition, she may give (often not-so-welcome) health tips to other people. She appears more confident when nursing. In contrast to the majority of students, she is a fan of having a place to be in Jabberwock Island, because her colleagues recognize her, and her skills make her a valuable asset.

Although she’s a gifted nurse, Mikan’s skills as a nurse aren’t without limitations and she was doubtful she would be able to save Fuyuhiko Kuzuryu alive because of the injuries he sustained in Peko Takayama’s execution in One Woman Army. But, her abilities are extremely efficient, as she was able successfully recover Kyoko Kirigiri following her participation in the Final Killing Game, where she was in danger of dying after taking Seiko Kimura’s medication to fight her NG Code poisoning.
