What does the ending of Moon Knight mean? Will Marc be back in a Moon Knight season 2? What sequences were real and what were just dreams? We break down the final twists and turns to help you understand the story and answer all your questions.

Moon Knight review

Marvel’s first attempt to tell a Disney+ true origin story with “Moon Knight” is a major success. The series, despite its visual flair and ambition, felt bland, even with Oscar Isaac’s dual-personality heroism in the title role. It was not an anomaly. “Eternals” attempted a similar introduction to dense mythology on the big screen before anyone else. It was met with mixed results.

It is a reminder of the fact that moviegoers have had more than a decade to become familiar with heroes like Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor. However, it can be more difficult to showcase some of these lesser-known heroes beyond the most ardent fans. There are warning signs for Marvel. “Moon Knight,” which is followed by several series that focus on supporting characters, is one example. “Ms. Marvel” (and “She-Hulk”) have the advantage of sharing franchises with existing Avengers and name recognition.

The “Moon Knight”‘s “muddled storytelling” seems to have squandered its core strengths. These included Isaac’s presence, cool looks, and an all-too-seldom used costume. The “Star Wars” has added gender references to the former.

After navigating through the layers of his complicated backstory, “Moon Knight” takes a spooky dive into Egyptian mythology. It has become more confusing and surreal. Marc Spector and Steven Grant, both protagonists, were in a mental institution talking to an anthropomorphic hippo in the penultimate chapters. The question wasn’t about keeping up with the story, but if it was worth the effort.

The sixth and final episode of the series ended the story, attempting to stop Ammit, the goddess of purification, from proceeding to “purify souls of Cairo, then the world.” The credits sequence was completed by Jake Lockley, a third character also rooted in comics.

Although it seemed that the series’ villain, Ethan Hawke, was over, the ending – which gave the god Khonshu his protégé – opened the door to more adventures if Marvel desired.

While this latest twist may be cause for celebration in the Marvel fan universe, “Moon Knight” often felt like a long Easter egg sequence. This is what he was clearly preaching to the choir. While Marvel has made clear that Disney+ allows you to explore many types of stories, “Moon Knight” feels like a unique showcase for Isaac and a failed experiment in terms both of execution and tone.

The Moon Knight plot interrogations

Who is Jake Lockley?

Jake Lockley, another Marvel Comics character, is portrayed by Marc Spector. He is a taxi driver and has connections to the criminal underworld through his informants. He’s been mentioned in the series before. At one point, both Marc & Steven had blacked out, and they didn’t remember killing any mercenaries. Later, Jake is rumored to be locked in a sarcophagus at the psychiatric hospital. In another scene, he appears to have taken control of a conversation with Dr. Harrow.

Is Jake Lockley the new avatar?

Harrow is transported from Sienkiewicz Psychiatric Hospital into a car that has Khonshu in the scene after credits. Marc isn’t there this time – it’s Jake Lockley. “Why would I need anyone else when he doesn’t know how troubled he really is?” Khonshu questions, before introducing Jake to Harrow.

Marc and Steven have left Khonshu. However, Steven isn’t done with their physical form.

The reality of the post-credits sequence

Moon Knight’s most shocking twist was Marc waking up at the Putnam Psychiatric Hospital. This threw into doubt the reality of the series. Marc didn’t really see the whole TV series until that moment.

However, Harrow appears to be in a psychiatric facility in the scene after credits. Is this a dream or a nightmare? It doesn’t appear so. It’s actually all quite real. The hospital is called Sienkiewicz Psychiatric Hospital after Bill Sienkiewicz, a comic book artist. Harrow doesn’t seem to be hallucinating and even sees Khonshu once more before he is taken away by Jake Lockley.

Layla gets superpowers

Layla is a full-fledged superhero at the end of the finale. It’s all because of Taweret. Layla is told by the god that Marc and Steven want to return from the afterlife. However, Layla refuses to become her avatar in the battle against Ammit. But she eventually accepts, but only temporarily. The hippo god gave her this cool winged costume.

Marvel.com (opens in new tab) Layla has an official superhero name, Scarlet Scarab.

How can Steven Grant escape from the sand?

Steven and Marc wake up in Putnam after trapping Ammit inside Harrow’s body. Although it’s confusing, Harrow leaves bloody footprints as he walks away. This is something Marc and Steven both notice. They refuse to believe Harrow’s diagnosis, and thus his reality. Both fall backwards and wake up in their London flat. They seem to have finally come to terms with one another and all that has happened between them. This last vision was their processing of everything that had happened.

What happens to Marc Spector/Steven Grant?

Marc and Steven awaken in London after stopping Harrow and Ammit. Both are free from Khonshu’s influence, but the old ankle restraint keeps them down and forces them to lie face-down on the ground. They both end up peacefully, though it’s not a noble one.

What happens to Arthur Harrow & Ammit?

Harrow has tried to bring Ammit back to life throughout the series – and has helped her fulfill her judgments about humanity. In episode 6, he finally accomplishes his goal and Ammit is back. Marc and Layla attempt to grab Harrow, but she immediately begins to eat souls and fight Khonshu.

Marc then blacks out and Jake Lockley takes down Harrow. Layla and Marc trap Ammit, but Marc refuses the death, despite Khonshu’s pleas.

However, the moon god discovers a way to get around it and sends Jake Lockley to kill Harrow. We can assume that Ammit has also been killed by Harrow.

Moon Knight ending explained

The Moon Knight Finale was full of action, and even had time to introduce two new characters.

Arthur Harrow’s release of Ammit, the Egyptian god of Ammit, from her captivity causes a major problem. Marc Spector, Steven Grant, and Layla El-Faouly are stuck in the afterlife. Layla El-Faouly keeps tabs on Harrow. Taweret informs her to release Khonshu and tells her that Steven and Marc are trying to return.

Marc goes to rescue Steven from the Duat (that is, the Egyptian afterlife). He gives his alternate self a heartfelt speech but it doesn’t seem to be enough. Marc ends up in the sand until Osiris opens the gates to the realm of the living. Taweret helps the pair to regain their lives.

Layla accepts to temporarily take the role of Taweret’s avatar in order to stop Ammit. Layla is now a full-fledged superhero complete with her own winged costume. She also liberates Khonshu.

Layla and Marc go after Ammit, making her vulnerable. Khonshu fights the Crocodile god. Marc becomes unconscious during the fight and Harrow is dead when he reaches him. Steven confirms that he was not behind the attack.

Marc and Layla complete the ritual to trap Ammit. Marc then gets Khonshu to release him, which means he loses all his powers as Moon Knight. Strangely, Steven and Marc end up at the Putnam Psychiatric Hospital. They notice Harrow’s bloody footprints and refuse to accept the diagnosis. They finally wake up in London and find their flat.

The Moon Knight post-credits scene reveals that Harrow was taken by Sienkiewicz Psychiatric Hospital after the finale’s events. Khonshu meets him again in a car and the god tells him that he still has a human avatar… Jake Lockley. Lockley shoots Harrow to death, possibly also killing Ammit.
