Dodge Tynes, a former athlete who is now a bankrupt real-estate developer in Detroit, is an ex-athlete. He wakes up from a headache and is told by two doctors that he has a brain tumor. He is offered a Tiro Fund business card by a nurse, which supposedly aids those who are financially struggling with terminal illnesses.

Dodge meets Miles Sellars at Tiro Fund. He offers Dodge a deal. Dodge will be “prey” for 24 hours and will be hunted by five hunters who will attempt to kill him. He will be able to have money wired directly to his bank account every hour that he survives. The increments will grow for each hour. Miles also explains how the rules work: Dodge can’t pause or stop the game after it begins; he can’t tell anyone that he’s in the game; he can’t leave the area.

These rules are unenforceable and will not be followed until Dodge dies. Dodge initially declines the offer but then accepts it with the promise that he will leave Val and their child financially secure. At 6:46 AM, the game begins at a diner. Miles takes Dodge’s medication and an ultrasound of their child. Miles also gives Dodge a phone to help him track his location. The phone will transmit his current location to hunters for 15 seconds each hour.

The game starts and Dodge finally comes across the five hunters. They are Nixon, a British gentleman who follows strict rules; Reagan, a Southern cowboy; Carter (a psychologist who tracks Dodge’s next move using Dodge’s profile); Kennedy, a martial art expert; and LBJ (an older man Dodge met earlier in the diner). Connell, Miles’ subordinate responsible for watching Dodge on the streets and cleaning up after him, also comes across Dodge.

Val then uses Dodge’s computer to find a total amount of $300,000. She becomes suspicious when Dodge doesn’t answer her calls. She calls the police but they can’t file a missing persons report. Val later discovers the Tiro fund card but finds the office empty. Dodge attempts to return home but Carter chases him. Dodge eventually kills Carter after a chase. Dodge’s friend Looger discovers Dodge but Dodge escapes after Nixon follows them.

After his phone reveals his location to the police, a shootout ensues and LBJ is killed. Reagan is also injured. Dodge is taken to the hospital, where a nurse confirms that Dodge’s medicine is fake. She also points out that no record of Dodge ever having been admitted there. Miles calls Dodge, who confirms that Dodge is not suffering from a terminal illness. He also admits that he was set up to take part in the game. Miles tells Dodge that Looger paid $50,000 to drug Dodge. He also explains that the rules remain. Miles kidnaps Val and takes her hostage.

In a construction shop, Dodge creates traps for Nixon and Reagan. They arrive at the construction shop, and Looger shoots Kennedy as she attempts to kill Dodge. Nixon escapes after Dodge sets fire to the shop and kills Reagan. Connell arrives at the scene to clean up, but Dodge confronts him and asks where Val is. Connell reveals that Miles had established their base at The Carrington which is Dodge’s failed high rise development.

Dodge makes his way to The Carrington, where he finds the building abandoned and Val bound up. Nixon chases Dodge up to the roof and, in the ensuing battle, Dodge falls from the ledge. Nixon is ready to kill Dodge by stabbing him in the hand. But Nixon sees the sun rising and puts away his weapon. He politely helps Dodge get back on his feet. Nixon thanks him for playing a good game and then walks away. Val is reunited with Dodge and Miles gives him a final call, telling him that he won the game. Miles is given a new file to use for his next prey.
