After watching this show, I felt so happy. The production was flawlessly executed, and the cast was outstanding. Our Flag Means Death is a must-see movie, and I worry about my faith in humanity if it isn’t revived.

Our Flag Means Death’ Season 1 Recap and Ending

First, let’s talk about 1717. This is the year of the golden age in piracy. Stede Bonnet was an English aristocratic landowner who gave up his fortunes to sail the open seas as a pirate. Bonnet was a very happy man for most of his life. He had always received everything easily, so in middle age he decided to leave behind a boring life and embark on a life of plunder and loot. Stede was not a good pirate expert, but he did have a basic understanding of the profession. This is where the real show begins. Stede had managed to gather a small crew.

Buttons is a grey-haired sailor with a seagull companion; Lucius is a poet scribe whose job it is to record all Stede’s pirate adventures; Frenchie is a small-built, compassionate man who loves violence. Oluwande is a dark-skinned, compassionate man who always attempts to settle disputes between crewmates; Jim is a young man with long, scruffy hair and a beard. Black Pete is a pirate closer to the traditional pirate Blackbeard’s.

Stede Bonnet, the leader of a unique and diverse crew, is not your typical pirate. He is an individual who values his crew’s happiness and encourages teamwork. Stede Bonnet also designed the ship according to his personal taste. There are walk-in wardrobes that can hold different clothing for different seasons, and even a library. The crew becomes increasingly bored and starts to loot fishermen and engage in friendly competition aboard. Crewmates would design a flag for the ship and would win Revenge.

Stede, along with his crew, spot a large ship at the horizon. They decide to take it down for some pirating action. As they approach the ship, they discover that it is an English Royal Navy warship and that they should not attack it. It is too late for them to retreat and they are about to attack the English when Stede is recognized by their captain and decides to pay him a visit.

Stede wants to escape the royal and social life of his past. He is disappointed to discover that the man is Nigel Badminton who was his bully in childhood and is now an officer with the British Navy. Stede and his crew pretend to be aristocrats to hide their true selves. When Nigel returns to his bullying ways inside Stede’s quarters, Stede and his team dress up as such to appear to be in the guise of aristocrats again. Stede is unable to take it anymore and strikes Nigel on the forehead with a showpiece. However, the captain is stabbed to death by his own sword. Two Britishers are taken hostage by the pirate crewmen and they flee before any Royal crew members can learn anything.

The Revenge crew manages to get their ship on a forest island and accidentally escape with the hostages. Jim is actually a woman who speaks and has been hiding her identity (the series uses the gender-neutral pronoun for Jim) with false hair and nose. Jim is a mercenary with a bounty on their heads, and Oluwande knew all about it and helped Jim escape onto the vessel.

Stede and his two men then go into the forest to search for their hostages. They meet a vicious-looking pirate who wants their possession. They manage to negotiate and get back to their ship before things go wrong. They then set off for the Republic of Pirates to sell the hostages. Stede, haunted by Nigel’s death, decides to give up violence and become a “Gentleman Pirate”, who “kills with kindness”.

They reach the harbor, and begin to try to sell the Englishmen. Then they arrive at a tavern run by Spanish Jackie, an notorious woman for her brutal piracy. Jim was being held responsible for the murder of Jackie’s husband. However, Oluwande persuades Jim to enter the tavern, then the shrine of the deceased husband in order to retrieve their family knife. Stede is returning to the Tavern with the villainous pirate he saw earlier. He introduces himself to Stede as Izzy Hands, and claims that his captain wants to meet with Stede. However, he deliberately doesn’t reveal the identity of his captain. Stede declines the offer and instead attempts to make a deal. The bartender tricks Stede and his crew into revealing the Spanish navy.

Just as Stede is about to be executed for being a pirate, another pirate ship attacks the ship and saves the crew. It turns out that Blackbeard, the legendary pirate, has saved them all and that Izzy is his first mate.

Our flag means death' Season 1 Recap and Ending

Blackbeard, who is actually Ed Teach, and Stede quickly become close friends and discover that Stede is bored with his life as a feared killer. He instead takes an interest in Stede’s fine clothes and books, as well as the cutlery and mannerisms of civilized society. They raid a ship and find an invitation for a French high society party. Stede is keen to avoid it, but Blackbeard is eager to go. They disguise themselves as an aristocrat, and their accountant, and Blackbeard is the accountant.

He is initially able to fit in with the party by his humor and jokes, but it turns wry when he has dinner. Blackbeard is confused by the cutlery, and is mocked by the aristocrats. He leaves the party wanting his revenge and a gun. Stede intervenes and deals with the high society in their own manner–by sharing their dirty secrets.

The relationship between the men grows over the next few weeks as Stede learns to duel Blackbeard. Izzy Hands is unhappy about this new relationship. He believes Blackbeard is becoming less violent in such companies. He asks his captain for help and tells him to kill Stede during a raid. As he prepares to kill his host, it seems Blackbeard approves of the plan.

Why Does Blackbeard Not Kill Stede?

Blackbeard previously spoke of an experience in which he witnessed the mythical Kraken emerge from the water to kill his father. Stede and his crew were also shown the visual tricks he uses to intimidate his enemies by Blackbeard. Stede and his crew attempt to learn the skill. They prepare a similar act, using the sounds and shadowy tentacles from the Kraken.

Blackbeard, who seems in two minds about Stede’s murder, sees the Kraken performing this act and is terrified to death. Stede learns that it wasn’t the Kraken who had killed his abusive father, but him. The act reminded him of that memory. Stede also learns of his abandoned plan to kill him, and he forgives him. Izzy soon challenges Stede to an Izzy challenge on the deck. The captain wins in a roundabout fashion and Izzy is exiled from the Revenge. To retaliate, he now visits Spanish Jackie.

The crew finds themselves in desperate need of oranges, and stops in a small rural town. Jim, Oluwande and the rest of the crew go to find the fruit. They come across Oluwande’s knife-throwing sister. This town was actually Jim’s native home, where he was born and their father was brutally murdered by a gang. The nun was the one who trained them, and she encourages Jim to seek revenge. Jim agrees and leaves Revenge’s crew despite their budding relationship with Oluwande.

Stede and Blackbeard were accompanied by Lucius. They had been out on a treasure hunting expedition based on a sketchy map. This was to cheer up Blackbeard’s gloomy and sad mood. Blackbeard doesn’t like this useless activity and Lucius informs him that Stede did it for his own good and that the pirate is now exuding encouragement and joy. They end up at a petrified orange but Stede appears to be overjoyed when they return to their ship.

Calico Jack, an old friend of Blackbeard, arrives in a small boat to wreck havoc on the ship. Calico Jack is a drunkard who has lost his crew after a mutiny and wants to reunite with his friend. Blackbeard is open to his ideas, too, as they drink incessantly, fire cannons on furniture, and smash glass bottles with whips. Jack is suspicious of Stede though. Stede has been feeling jealous of Jack since Blackbeard spends more time together and shares more details about their past revelries which included sexual proximity. Stede plays it down and says he doesn’t have anything to do with Ed (Stede calls Blackbeard his real name now). However, Calico Jack causes Calico Jack great pain when he destroys more of his ship’s equipment and kills Buttons’ seagull friend. The captain then orders Jack to leave.

Jack invites Blackbeard, who agrees, to join him as he leaves. Jack tells Blackbeard that Izzy sent him to take Blackbeard from the Revenge. The Revenge is about to be attacked by an English Navy. Calico is left to die by the British cannon fire. The man is clearly furious when he discovers this plot. As the English Navy arrives, he swims back to Revenge and captures them all onboard. Chauncy Badminton is the English’s twin brother and chief of staff. He is investigating rumors that Stede may have killed his brother.

Soon, the truth is out and the naval officer orders Stede to be executed with gunfire. Blackbeard offers an Act of Grace to both of them just as they are about being killed. The Act of Grace would allow the pirates to be spared their lives if the English Navy fought the Spanish. They are sent to a privateering school, where they share their happiness and have a romantic kiss. Stede hears Ed tell Stede that he has shaved his black beard and plans to escape to their ship where they will spend the rest of their lives.

Stede follows the plan exactly, but Chauncy trips over and kills Stede while trying to attack Stede. Stede is left with yet another death. Ed arrives at their supposed meeting place and does not find Stede. He waits for Stede to return to the Revenge, then he returns. Stede, shocked at all the sudden events and knowing that he is dead, decides to return to his family and home.

Both Stede, Blackbeard and their pasts are haunting them. This is what makes them so attractive to one another. Stede was bullied as a child by his friends and his emotionally abusive father. He thought he was too delicate and soft-hearted and found solace in picking flowers, rather than hunting animals or getting his hands bloodied. Stede is haunted by the ghosts and vilified by his failures throughout his life. Stede has never been in a position to locate his belongings anywhere. He has felt an outsider since childhood. His father fixed his marriage and he had children. This is what drove him to piracy.

Ed’s childhood memories include his mother giving him expensive and fancy clothes that they couldn’t afford as they belonged to the working class. His father beating his mother. At a young age, Ed had learned lessons about violence and class, which drove him to piracy. One was looking for his place in the world while another was trying to establish his dominance over it. They slowly become closer when they finally get together and share things that were never possible before. Blackbeard can’t kill Stede, as he has a true friend in Stede. However, this slowly leads the men to a place of love.
