SYNOPSIS OF THE RINGS OF POWER

SYNOPSIS OF THE RINGS OF POWER

This epic drama, set thousands of years prior to the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, will transport viewers to an era when great powers were created, kingdoms rose and fell to ruin, and unlikely heroes were tested. Hope was suspended by the finest of threads, and the greatest villain Tolkien ever wrote threatened to cover the entire world in darkness. It all began in a period of relative peace.

This series features a cast of characters that are familiar and unknown as they face the long-feared return of evil to Middle-earth. These kingdoms and characters will leave a legacy that lasts long after their departures, from the deepest parts of the Misty Mountains to the magnificent forests of Lindon’s elf-capital, to Numenor’s island kingdom, to faraway reaches of the map.

Rings Of Power episode 4 REVIEW

Rings Of Power episode 4 REVIEW

The halfway point of The Rings of Power is reached, and I must admit, it’s starting to lose its charm. There is still much to love about this show, including the amazing performances by the actors and the magnificent visuals. Surprisingly, “The Great Wave” lasted over 70 minutes.

Like last week, the episode was dominated by events in Numenor. We are able to learn more about Queen Regent Miriel (Cynthia Addai-Robinson), and why she is reluctant to assist Galadriel in her fight against Sauron (Morfydd Clark). It turns out that Miriel had a vision about a great wave coming down and dragging Numenor into the sea. That vision began with Galadriel’s entry to the island kingdom. Again, the visuals in Miriel’s dream are amazing. This plotline feels a bit forced.

Rings Of Power episode 4 REVIEW

This is too bad, as Numenor is still quite amazing. Galadriel’s efforts to persuade the Numenoreans that they should help the Southlands people fail miserably. After breaking out of her prison cell, Galadriel discovers that Numenor’s king is in bed and cannot form coherent sentences. She is eventually expelled from the city.

Galadriel asked Queen Regent to form a new alliance between the Kingdoms of Elves and Numenor. She informs the Queen Halbrand wasn’t who she believed him to be. She claims that he was the heir to the Southlands’ throne. She begged him to lead the Southlanders against Sauron. The Queen made it clear that Halbrand would be punished for his actions. Adar is a follower of Morgoth, but whether he’s a survivor from the War of Wrath or he converted during the centuries of peace remains to be seen. Adar also has no obvious special abilities, although his line about not being a god “yet” teases a nefarious plan to obtain greater power – potentially where Theo’s mysterious black sword hilt comes into play. Adar’s ultimate goal is less likely to be personal domination over Middle-earth, and more likely to be setting the stage for Sauron’s return.

This could explain why his focus rests on the Southlands, which sits exactly where Mordor is located in The Lord of the Rings. As a diplomat himself, he gives valuable advice. Galadriel is asked to show the Queen how to overcome her fears, and then to bring her to her side. Pharazon arrives to explain the Queen’s decision. Galadriel was to return to her realm with armed guards. She was not a mortal who could be contained.

Tar-Palantir took Miriel to the tower to see the terrible visions that had been haunting his mind. Seven Palantiri existed on Middle Earth. Six of them were lost or hidden. One Palantir was found safe and sound in the tower, where Tar-Palantir was. Galadriel is made to touch the one by Queen Regent Miriel, who also sees Numenor submerged in the great tides. Galadriel attempts to persuade her to choose faith over fear.

The bullet points of power

The Bullet Points of Power

I have been arguing with myself about whether Halbrand is Aragorn 2.0, the future Nazgul or Sauron disguised. Although the jury is still out on this, it seems more likely that he is Sauron after this episode. Did you notice how he whispered advice to Pharazon as Galadriel fled prison? Tolkien writes that Sauron exerts a special influence on Pharazon. The shot of the two of them together seems very deliberate. Although Theo’s search for rice didn’t go as planned, the hint that his sword’s hilt is valuable is interesting. It felt like the show was trying to make the situation very intense, but other than the fakeout in which Theo nearly loses his arm and was thrown out, I never found myself on the edge.
