Star Trek Lower Decks follows Starfleet’s underdogs as they explore the universe, assist civilizations, and make new lives.
Review
Animations are not something I love as much as the next person. My window is very small. Archer and I will occasionally watch The Simpsons even though it is long past its peak.
Star Trek Lower Decks is a lot more fun than I expected. It has references and self-deprecating humor I like, as well as a lot of crude comedy that may not appeal to everyone. The biggest problem I have with The Simpsons.
I don’t know how much it will continue, and why the primary characters aren’t promoted.
“The Stars at Night” continues the story of last week’s Trusted Sources, while Captain Freeman consults Starfleet Command. Admiral Buenamigo, after the successful debut of the fully-automated Texas_class, makes a bold proposal: that the California_class be retired and that the Texas_class assume responsibility for Starfleet’s second contact.
Freeman discovers a loophole which allows her to challenge the proposal of retiring the California-class after the Cerritos loses against the Texas-class USS Aledo. It is then that it becomes clear that Admiral Buenamigo, the Starfleet commando who wanted Rutherford’s memories erased, was actually the one responsible for creating the code that runs the Texas class ships. This code base is also the same as that used for Badgey.
Admiral Buenamigo is killed by the artificial intelligence of the Texas class ships and Starfleet begins to attack. Only with the combined might of the entire California_class, which Mariner has decided is her place in Starfleet, can the Texasclass be destroyed. The California_class ships are able to demonstrate their unique skills.
It was great to see the end of Rutherford’s story and to discover how it was being woven into the entire season. Another way Lower Decks builds its mythos is to tie that story into Badgey’s origin.
Although he isn’t as prominent in “The Stars at Night”, it’s clear that he has made great strides. He is far more confident than the timid Boimler of Season 1.
Boimler’s bold decision to grow in confidence and be bolder is displayed here, even though he can’t believe that a senior officer would be mad at him. (Some things will never change!)

This episode’s story of Mariner is the best. It is an absolute joy to watch her struggle through life without Starfleet and realize that it was better for her within Starfleet.
The way her solution is based on trust and teamwork, rather than the rebel Mariner who wants everything to be perfect herself, is a wonderful rounding out of the character arc. This episode really shows how far Mariner has come since the first season.
Star Trek’s third big and action-packed finale is my only criticism. It’s big…and action packed… again! It’s so big and exciting that the Cerritos ended the season in need of a long stay at a starbase facility.

Even though it feels repetitive, the finale even included a celebration at the Cerritos bar during repairs to the ship. I am a sucker for big, action-packed finales so I don’t worry too much.
