Leighton Meester, Gossip Girl’s star, has spoken out about The Weekend Away’s ending and how it differs to its source material. Two women, Beth Meester and Kate Wolfe, embark on a girls trip to Croatia. Kate is killed and Beth sets out on a hunt for the perpetrator.
After many twists and turns it was revealed that Beth’s husband Rob (Luke Norris) is the murderer. He had been having an affair in secret with Kate.
However, even though the killer is the same as Sarah Alderson’s original novel, the ending circumstances of the story are different. Rob escapes with their daughter after Beth learns that he is responsible for the murder.
The Weekend Review
The weekend begins with the taxi driver telling the story of his Syrian origins. Beth, the girl behind him was Beth. He went to Kate to celebrate the weekend. After Beth is taken to Kate’s home, the driver gives Beth a number so she can call him again if necessary. Then, Kate and Beth host a party at the house.
Kate takes Beth to the club, and Kate meets two boys. Kate then brings the boys home. Beth was so drunk that she fell asleep before Kate could have fun with them all night. The boys have fun and run off with Kate’s purse, phone and money. Kate follows them to the police station, but Kate doesn’t return home.

Beth wakes up the next morning to find Kate gone. Beth is very upset and calls Rob. She tells him all her problems and that Rob was husband and wife, but nothing is good between them. They have a child. Beth assists Zain in finding the boys who came to her home at night. He explains that the boys ran away with the purse and didn’t kill Kate.
Beth discovers Kate’s purse and mobile, and Beth then goes to Kate’s body to examine it. She then opens Kate’s phone with facelock, and she sees Kate’s chat. Then, Beth learns that Rob is having an affair with Kate, and how they fought the last time. The police were looking for a different story. They arrested Beth as they believe Beth is responsible for Kate’s death. Zain saved Beth from the police because he was extremely smart.
He takes Beth, and he knows Beth’s innocence. The house where Beth and Kate lived had cameras installed all around it. Beth didn’t know this until Beth discovered. Beth quietly went into her bedroom to check the camera. Beth discovers that Kate was not murdered by the boys. However, Kate is dropped in the night by a policeman. This was the same policeman Beth had filed a report about Kate’s disappearance.

Weekend Away Ending explained
The landlord arrives at the house and discovers that Beth has discovered everything. He confronts Beth, but she escapes. Zain is found by Beth, and they both find the taxi driver. Kate was in that taxi that night. They discover that he dropped at the police station. The news reports that Beth is being investigated by the police for the murder of Kate are now broadcast. The police arrive and Beth observes that Pavic’s car looks exactly like the one Kate took home that night. After a chase Beth confronts Pavic, and tells him that he knew she was killed. He replies, “She’s a s**t” but then accidentally falls from a height, and dies. Pavic is the murderer.
Beth splits with Rob several times and now shares custody of their child Aster. Beth finds a fragment of the necklace when she goes to search for her car keys. She gives it to Kate. Rob is the real killer, she realizes. While confronting Rob, she calls Kovac, another officer in the case. Rob claims that Kate was going to tell Beth all about their relationship because she believes what happened was a mistake. Rob resisted. This leads to an argument at the seaside.

He hit her in the heat of the moment. Inadvertently, she tripped and fell on the stone. She then banged her head against it. Rob allowed her to drown after she fell on the water. Kovac is attentive to the conversation and calls police. Rob and Beth have a fight in this situation. Beth hits Rob on the throat, just like Zain had told her earlier. She then leaves with Aster. We can see that Rob is being taken into custody by the police cars. Beth walks confidently from the scene, completely independent from anyone.
What makes Beth suspect?
Beth was drugged the night Kate disappeared and did not recall much of what had happened. To find out the fate of Kate, Beth was determined to get the assistance Zain Zakaria (a Syrian taxi driver) to retrieve Kate’s bag from two escorts that night. Kate’s phone was found inside the bag.
Beth took Kate’s cell phone to the coroner to unlock it using facial recognition. She discovered that Kate was having an affair. The police eventually discovered that Beth’s Airbnb landlord Sebastian was secretly watching her through hidden cameras. Even worse, Zain was linked to an Albanian criminal organization, which led to Beth being suspect because she had a motive to murder.

It was Inspector Pavic
Beth was surprised to discover that the vehicle number plate of Inspector Pavic, the one that had dropped Kate off last time, was the one that the police used to take Beth into custody for the second arrest. After a long chase in which Zain surrendered to buy time for Beth, Beth was finally taken by Pavic at a top of a building. Pavic grabbed Beth’s hand and called Kate a sl*t when Beth told him that Kate had rejected his advances. Pavic became alarmed when Inspector Kovac arrived. Pavic fell through the roof and fell on a rock. He then died.
The police recovered cctv footage showing a man attacking Kate (at the time, it was presumed to have been Pavic). After Kate reported a bag stolen, Pavic drove Kate home. Inspector Kovac speculated that Pavic had made a snide comment about Kate. She told Beth that Pavic had complained of sexual assaulting sex workers, but strangely, the women withdrew those statements.
Who is the killer?
The case was closed and Pavic was presumed to have been the murderer. Beth then went back to her normal life. When Beth brought her son Aster to Rob’s house, she discovered that Rob was actually the murderer. Beth found a bead in Rob’s jacket that was Kate’s necklace. Beth realized that Pavic was not what she thought and confronted Rob. She kept the Inspector Kovac on the telephone, listening to Rob’s confession. Rob became angry when Kate said that she wanted to end their affair and tell Beth the truth.
He then hit Kate in the neck, and she fell into the river. Rob, who believed Kate was dead from the hit, didn’t bother to help her out of the river. He was shocked when he learned that Kate drowned in an autopsy. Rob admitted to killing Kate and lied that Kate was begging him to stay with her. Photo: Netflix
After Kovac’s warning, the police made their way to Rob’s arrest. As instructed by Zain, Beth attacked Rob in his neck and nuts and fled the home with her son.
