Although the story has been told many times, it is still a classic tale. However, anime and manga tell the story in a different way. Instead of following an ancient hero in their quest to defeat an evil dragon and restore peace to the land (okay so there may be dragons), they follow someone from another world who is trapped in another dimension. It usually revolves around how the characters must adapt to new customs and learn from other lands.

In English literature, an equivalent to Isekai works would be “portal fantasy“. This category of fantasy is where a character who doesn’t know anything about magic and lives a normal life ends up fighting monsters in order to survive on fantasy worlds they don’t know much about.

The Isekai formula

Urashima Taro, a fisherman that helps a turtle, is the earliest isekai story. The turtle transforms and becomes a woman, which takes him to an alternate world where they are happy before he chooses to return home.

Two subcategories of Japanese light novels, manga, or anime are very popular. One is Isekai Ten’i; the summoned to save the parallel worlds trope, which involves a character’s physical transportation into another world. The other is Isekai Tensei. In this case, the spirit transfers from our world without anyone else. This usually involves the appearance of gods or goddesses.

These are the common tropes of the entire genre: a normal school student dies and meets a god and gets another chance at life in a parallel universe (Isekai Tensei); a person living their normal life gets summoned by residents of a magical realm to help in defeating a demon lord (Isekai Ten’i).

The only requirement to be part of this category is to travel through portals or get reincarnated in a parallel universe. There are common tropes that make up the genre. One of the most common desires is to fulfill or satisfy a desire in an indirect manner. This is often manifested as the transformation of someone with no abilities into someone who is superpowerful.

Revision to The Formula

Overpowered protagonists with incorruptible morals were a common trope that was gaining popularity. Re:Zero and KonoSuba, two of the most popular isekai series of today, have weak protagonists.

Some isekai anime would put Tensei and Ten’i subcategories together in anime series like Sword Art Online, How Not To Summon A Demon Lord, and Overlord that involve video game mechanics to explain qualities that are unexplored or outright broken. The character uses magical powers or an array of abilities that they wouldn’t normally have access to apart from the virtual worlds.

Isekai anime with different approaches

Many anime fans automatically think of Isekai as shōnen, given that the protagonists are usually male and they have a tendency to have incredible powers. But not every protagonist is male or superhuman – Spirited Away and Inuyasha wouldn’t exactly classify as shōjo. It would be interesting to see other interpretations of the genre. The 90’s anime Fushigi Yuugi is one of the first shows to introduce a genre that has become popularized over time. Two girls are transplanted into a world that is based on Chinese mythology, and given different tasks as priestesses. They are not transported across dimensions by truck-kuns; instead, books transport Miaka and Yui from their normal lives via transportation magic to another dimension. There they will fight for their gods.
