American Horror Story Season 12 Review

This season, we’ve been pondering whether NYC feels like American Horror Story. Perhaps it would have been more productive to look at what AHS has offered us as a medium in the past. Are we afraid to watch AHS? Sure. It is. But, more often than not, we look at it to push our limits, whether that be through the graphic bloody gore, the comical humor of some outrageously campy characters, or the emotional pull of losing someone close to us. These are the hallmarks of horror, broadly speaking. NYC may not have the same pace or flair as previous seasons, but it expanded the boundaries of what AHS has always been for. It doesn’t really matter if it was a good AHS season: It was great television.
The majority of NYC was centered on two questions: Who’s Big Daddy and what’s the growing illness plaguing gay communities? Parts one and two of “A Requiem 1981/1987” provide answers to these questions, even if they are metaphors.
Part one focuses on the rapid progression of the illness. We see Patrick and Sam die even though they had only mild symptoms. However, before their deaths, both are visited by ghosts from the past. It’s as if they were Ebenezer Scrooge on Christmas morning. Henry visits Sam, and then Theo visits Sam. We never saw Henry die. Theo takes Sam to the hospital and shows him how the men he knew, but neglected to show kindness to, have also succumbed. Theo encourages Sam to offer warmth, as there are so few people in the world who will extend help to the dying. These scenes are as terrifying as they are moving. To die in a hospital alone, begging for compassion and help, is a horror that many people in both the AIDS crisis as well as the COVID-19 pandemics have experienced.

Henry then takes Sam to a prison, where he confronts the ways in which he has turned the pain he suffered at the hands of his father and other bosses into sexual depravity. He also shows him Fire Island’s beach. Sam finally uncovers Big Daddy. He becomes a smaller, more blond man than he used to be, possibly a former lover. This is all ambiguous, but it suggests that Big Daddy was always a specter capable of incarnating whatever his victims fear the most. Sam’s Patrick goes through a similar journey, where he is forced to confront his homophobia and the ways that his policemanship and masculinity have caused him unnecessary pain. Part one ends with the word “AIDS” and we learn that this illness is not a parallel.
This sequence and the explicit mentions of AIDS bring us closer to the message and purpose of the season. There is a reckoning happening with Patrick and Sam’s ghosts. It may also be with the creators and writers of the show. This season is about gay communities and it has not shied away from addressing some of its more controversial aspects. Some of the community members abuse drugs, others engage in dangerous sexual activity, some fall into depravity traps, and some hide their shame in harmful ways. Sam represented the worst parts of this world. He, not Whitely/Mai Tai, was the villain of the community’s ills, the monster many who were opposed to queerness believed the entire community was.
Sam and Patrick’s physical decline are a sign of the belief that the body is in control, that shame and pain have led to disease. This belief was shared by many homophobic bigots during the AIDS crisis. They believed that the disease targeting gay people was a punishment. This is one of the more complex aspects of NYC, although it is not addressed in the final episodes. NYC sometimes displayed behaviors that were borderline harmful stereotypes. However, it made a key point: One doesn’t have to adhere to the strictest standards of heteronormative acceptability to be worthy and dignified.

Part two reveals that Hannah died of HIV/AIDS after she contracted it from Adam through insemination. However, Hannah was already beginning to understand the disease’s nature. It is not clear where the virus originated, how it related to Fire Island, or whether there were any institutional conspiracies or lab leaks. Much remains unresolved, just like the actual AIDS crisis. The number of HIV-related deaths in the United States has declined steadily since 1995 but increased dramatically in the ten years prior, largely due to government inaction. We have not been able to answer this question fully, and NYC continues to maintain that ambiguity. Part two provides a fragmented narrative that unravels the mysteries of the season, but it does not provide a coherent narrative. One of the most moving and touching scenes in AHS, we see Gino’s gradual decline as he watches the AIDS epidemic grow around him. The scene is set to Kraftwerk’s “Radioactivity.” It is palpable because the reality of the situation is real. AHS does not have happy endings. However, there are often catharses. The only thing that can offer catharsis is the bitter resolve of those who are left.
The final season of American Horror Story was not perfect. There are still loose ends. Big Daddy was never more than a symbol of pain, shame, and trauma. What happens to the lesbians? Are there any supernatural forces at play? We won’t know. But NYC was different than the last season. It had a purpose and a point. NYC was an elegy to AIDS. Its plotlines served as a powerful metaphor for the pain and grief of the gay community, while also maintaining a strong narrative cohesion. It was slow and gritty, but it melted into an honest portrait of American horror.
