Sky’s hilarious, funny comedy-drama breeders returns for its third season. Series leads Martin Freeman (and Daisy Haggard) suggest that this isn’t the end.

Haggard and Freeman play Paul and Ally. They are confronted with the harsh realities that parenthood brings as they raise their children Luke (and Ava) respectively.

The second season, which aired last year, featured a substantial time jump with Eve Prenelle and Alex Eastwood taking on the roles as older versions of Paul or Ally’s children. Although the characters’ advancing years might indicate that Breeders have a time limit on how long they can tackle the challenges of raising young children for, Freeman stated RadioTimes.com he believes there is still “more to be done”.

FX’s dark comedy has excelled in portraying the harsh realities of parenthood over two seasons. The third season is no exception. This is not a happy sitcom that wraps up its issues in a 20-minute episode with a warm heart. Paul (Martin Freeman), and Ally (Daisy Haggard), are often frustrated by their children. He expresses his frustration through verbal rage while she mainly solemnly seethes. Despite some setbacks, the duo eventually try to raise their children as best they can. They must also consider how Paul’s anger affects Luke (Alex Eastwood), a 13-year old boy with burgeoning anxiety.

They sneak in movies and lunches together. Their slow-burn storyline will be a major part of the season’s second half.

While Paul works on anger management issues, Ally takes over at home. While she tries to raise her two children alone, Ally also has to deal with a major health and work crisis. The conflict between Luke and Paul was the crux of season 2. This season’s episodes focus more on Ally’s isolation. Haggard pulls off a remarkable trick: She keeps her character on edge of a breakdown while maintaining her gravitas, and she still packs a punch with her comic timing.

Ava and Ally’s relationship are also discussed on the show. Ava is too wise for her age and believes she’s been put on the back burner. Ava misses Paul, Luke seems to be getting his way and she feels distant from her mother. She is only human to feel lost in all the family drama. Can’t you see all the younger siblings nodding in agreement? Both Ava’s first period and Ally’s early menopause are a great example of the parallel between them.

Also, there’s everything Jim and Jackie do. While it won’t be a laugh-out-loud comedy or one-liners, Breeders is still one of the most grounded family comedies currently on television.
