As each character gets their due, the mystery that has been building since episode is finally solved. As each character is revealed their true motivations and intentions, they tie the loose ends. Everything turns out to be as chaotic as it was when it began. Here’s everything you need to understand what happened at the conclusion of “Dark Winds”.
Dark Winds Season 1 Finale Recap
Everyone gathers at the caves where Frank Nakai, James Tso and others have been hiding. Joe Leaphorn attempts to stop them, but nearly dies. Jim warns Bernadette about Whitover. Once they get to Hosteen Tso’s house, she leaves the FBI agent behind. She makes her way to the cave and Jim arrives. Whitover shoots Jim in the arm as they fight.
Tso and Nakai are busy smoking Leaphorn out, while Bernadette saves the Mormon family. After rescuing them, she returns to cave with Jim. But Whitover was already there. Leaphorn and Nakai don’t know anything about Whitover’s involvement with Tso. Nakai and Leaphorn split the money, and Leaphorn is taken prisoner in the same pit that the Mormons were held. Whitover and Tso both leave the cave carrying their shares of the money. Tso is followed by Leaphorn, and Whitover is confronted by Chee.
Dark Winds Season 1 The End Explained
It turns out that what appeared to be a simple case robbery was actually a complex crime. It turns out that Whitover was involved in the robbery from the beginning. He was hunting members of the Buffalo society not to bring them to trial, but to take his share of the loot. Apart from being Navajo, he had a different reason to send Chee to the reservation. Whitover knew that he would need a fall man, someone who could fill in for the missing piece if anyone suspects an insider in the robbery. It would make sense for others to join the Buffalo society, since Chee was Navajo. Chee was lied to about his promise of a pay rise and promotion.
Chee contemplates shooting Whitover or taking him into custody. However, Whitover uses abusive language towards Anna which Guy, her father, hears. Whitover is shot and killed by Chee. Bernadette arrives just as Chee is about to kill Whitover. She drags Whitover’s body, along with the money, into the cave and blows it up. Guy was also there, but no one would know. Tso follows Leaphorn to Hosteen’s home, but is overwhelmed by him. They have a conversation about Tso’s crimes and discuss how he can no longer be trusted. James Tso doesn’t want to do that so he allows Leaphorn to go and commits suicide.
We discover that the case is over, but Leaphorn still has some questions to solve. Chee plans to rebuild his home after he leaves the FBI. Chee won’t answer Leaphorn’s questions about Guy when he asks what actually happened in the cave. It turns out that Whitover’s only body was found in the cave, which led to inconsistencies in the story. Chee also mentioned Nakai and the money in his report. However, both were missing. Whitover didn’t actually shoot Nakai. He probably ran off with the money, possibly from another way out of the cave not known to anyone else.
Who killed Anna and Hosteen?”
The first season begins with Anna Atcitty’s double murder and Hosteen Taso’s assassination. This horrendous crime prompts officers Leaphorn to join Chee in an investigation that uncovers many disturbing secrets. However, the identity of the killer lingers until the very end. In Episode 5 Frank Nakai confronts James Tso to discuss the murders. The latter denies any connection. He responds to the question by asking: Did Nakai really believe that the cops were better than his partner?
It was an inexplicable rejection of the cops’ claims, which meant that Tso may have had some involvement. Chee learns of Tso’s involvement when he discovers that Tso was fingerprinted at the crime scene by the FBI. Whitover later tells Tso about the fingerprints. Tso does not refute Whitover. This confirms James Tso’s murder of his uncle Hosteen.
The question is, “Why did James kill his uncle?” He replied, “for the cause”. James Tso was fed up with the inhuman treatment of his people on their land. He dedicated his life to fighting the capitalist oppressive regime. The Buffalo Society was a cover for many crimes. When he found out the truth about the dig site, and how Vines planned to exploit land belonging to the Navajo, he realized a clear purpose. Tso devised a plan to stop Vines from exploiting the land that belonged to the Navajo. It involved a robbery, which led many deaths.
We see Tso killing a lot of people over the course of the season, many of them Navajo. Frank Nakai begins to tire of his routine, even though he says it is “for the cause”. Nakai believed that Tso would help his people when he joined it. He saw his people dying at the hands the man who claimed to be their salvation. Tso did not tell Anna and his uncle about this.
James Tso killed Hosteen because he had to have Father Benjamin’s cover. Hosteen would be able identify him, which would create problems for him. James was sent to boarding school where he was abused under the guise of being “civilized”. Although he thought that his family would be there to protect him, they sent him back. This anger was what he used to take out on Hosteen. Anna was not killed by him. Ada’s black magic was what caused her death. This is evident in the white streak that adorns the hair of the girl.
Dark Winds Season 2 Release Date
AMC renewed the series in June 2022 for a second six-episode season. Dark Winds season 2 release date is difficult to predict as the renewal was only announced a few days earlier.
The good news is that it is likely that the next season will not be delayed. It will be released earlier than expected, which will mean that the release date will probably be in the early to mid-2023.
Dark Winds Season 2 Plot
Dark Winds Season 2 will pick up where the season’s final episode, HozhooNaashaa (released July 17, 2022), left off. Written by Maya Rose Dittloff, the episode was directed by Chris Eyre. According to the official synopsis, the episode’s story begins with “Leaphorn and Chee descend upon the Buffalo Society hiding place, only for them to face hard decisions that could alter the outcome of their lives.” It is quite interesting.
This established premise will lead to Dark Winds Season 2’s pilot episode. Rumours suggest that it will pick up any subplots or cliffhangers in the pilot episode of Dark Winds Season 2. It will then dive into the world with more experiments, giving viewers something different to see instead of the same old themes. To ensure the best content and plot, the network must attract viewers to stream the series. This will allow them to keep these beloved characters at the forefront of the story while also generating the most valuable content. It will be released when it drops. There are no official updates. We will wait until they confirm, then we’ll be able to update you.

Review Before To Watch Dark Winds Season 2
Dark Winds had high expectations when details of its production were revealed. An exciting television series was possible with the help of a Native Indian cast and a writing team that had full creative freedom.
The first season delivered and, dare I say it, exceeded my expectations. Dark Winds cleverly combines two gruesome murders within the Navajo reservation. The progression of this investigation presents confusing and hard-hitting recollections of traumas from the past.
As they deal with strange happenings in town, the show’s universe shows us how broken characters can find closure and affection from unyielding sources.
Dark Winds is not a show that feels “native” from the first episode. It is self-aware of the setting, but doesn’t hesitate to change that identity to be more traditional. It is a story about local police solving the double murder/heist crime that shocked the community.
It isn’t made clear that the cultural representation of it doesn’t exist. The writers don’t force us to believe what they want, but rather the story itself. It is a relief to know that the focus is always on the plot.
Joe Leaphorn, a respected veteran and taciturn in the force, is an example of a small-town sheriff who can iron out problems across the town. Bernadette Manuelito, the only active officer of the tribal police force, is under his command.
Leaphorn confronts Anna Atcitty’s dead body. Hosteen Tso, another local, is also found murdered in a hotel room. The FBI joins the investigation to find perpetrators of a Gallop bank heist.
Agent Chee, disguised as a new member of the force, joins the party to help in the search for answers. His arrival kicks off the cat-and-mouse game of searching for the pieces that will solve the marauding puzzle. Based on Tommy Hillerman’s Leaphorn and Chee series, the plot and characters of the first season are based. Hillerman has written extensively about these characters.
Season one has six episodes and isn’t too long. The creators made the right executive decisions to compress all that information in such a short time. The episodes are well-paced and feature cutting-edge editing. There are no melodramatic bits.
The beautiful scenery of the reservation provides a stunning backdrop to the story. The setting is almost majestic and draws you in from the screen. We don’t see a series that focuses on a specific culture or community without adding details. To allow the viewer to experience something new, everything is kept in its original form.
In the episodes, Dine is used extensively. We are shown almost every detail of their traditions. Dark Winds features an entire episode devoted to the rooted ceremony, which is similar to a quinceanera within the Hispanic culture.
Everything is native in taste, from the costumes to makeup and styling. For viewers tired of the mundane details of television, the cultural flavor is an appealing alternative. They proudly wear their Dine colors and don’t hesitate to show it off. It is still the passenger’s seat, despite its uniqueness. Production quality, story, and plot are all well taken care of. They place the writers in the driving seat and let the story define the show.
The team shows that almost every character has a vulnerable side, despite their toughness. They are not meant to be seen or heard as weak, but rather to show their longing to be heard. The show manages to be both confrontational and intrusive without being too pushy. The show does not indulge in unnecessary soapy lookbacks, or voyeuristic pressing to get into the cracks.
Even when pushed, the trauma can be gently re-experienced in a gentle, respectful manner. Leaphorn is so busy putting out fires for the Rez, that he forgets to take care of his own needs. He is so busy with other people’s problems that he cannot see a way back to how things used to be. He is still not able to heal from the loss of his son Joe. Emma has not been able to heal either. They are too afraid to express their feelings. They live a miserable domestic life, without any joy or living.
Guy and his wife are also caught in the trap. Many characters are also looking out from the pit of hopelessness and apathy. It is their core story that gives them a sense of humanity and identity.
The ensemble does a great job of acting. Zahn McClarnon loves playing Leaphorn and makes a great impression on you by getting under his skins to win your heart. He is a pivotal figure in the universe and can shoulder the responsibility. Season one is full of great performances, but Zahn stands out above the rest. Zahn is the ideal action man because of his evocative close-ups, and his all-season qualities. Jessica Matten, the unassuming dark horse, also turns in a performance that is of the highest standard.
Bernadette is not an easy character to manage. Her easy-going personality can only be a joke around her true feelings of insecurity, angst and deep love for a few. Matten is also very convincing.
Her uniform is now off and she’s more transparent as a person, which is a winning quality. Season one’s Jeremiah Bitsui is a very one-dimensional character. Only the final moments of season one show his vulnerability and fear. This is a point I mentioned in my review of the last episode. It’s certainly something that stands out. It would have been more worthwhile to explore his motivations and background. Although he makes the best of the final moments to show his potential, a little more effort would have been appreciated.
Season 1 of Dark Winds is compelling television you should watch. It is balanced in its story and has all the technical nuance you could want. Although it isn’t necessarily slow-burning, the execution isn’t too hasty. We give this one a big thumbs-up!
