It is difficult to get into the series’ groove; it doesn’t settle on a tone and it refuses to give us characters we care about.

Guilty Party episodes last around half an hour. This can be a blessing for series that keep things moving, meaningful, and tight. Guilty Party’s pilot only delivers a third of the story in an episode. The show is not yet a binge-worthy product, but this is what the show relies on to hook us. It’s a complete failure. Beckinsale’s Beth Baker doesn’t seem so sad that we can empathize, nor is she funny or quirky enough to capture our attention.

Sometimes it feels like Beth was taken from Legally Blonde. She’s a hidden genius who people underestimate. But then, her ability to think clearly and influence others in all areas of her life is a problem. She’s also not charismatically inept, which makes her relatable and likable.

This episode is “The Last Real Journalist in Denver”. We see Beth receiving a local award for excellence in investigative journalism. However, the prize was immediately canceled and her job at The Denver Chronicle taken away. She lied about something. That’s all we know about Beth in the pilot. As we exit the premiere episode, that’s all we know of Beth. We don’t know what the big lie was, why she did it, or any explanations coming from her side. It’s likely that this information will be revealed later in the season. But it’s too late. Beth’s first chapter has no smarts. It’s amazing how ignorant she is about most things. Beth, who was exiled to the world of pop-culture journalism, is foolish enough to believe her new editor at Pop Bite would like a story on human trafficking and homelessness. It’s as if Beth enters work each day completely unaware of whom she works for.

The show then has the gall to criticize Pop Bite for being what it is and Beth for not being capable of reading every room she enters. Although we are supposed to believe her as a sleuth and she does handle every situation with the same level of human experience, there isn’t one episode in which she can’t read a single room.The first episode is so weak that it’s difficult to see why we should continue. “

Guilty Party could improve over the course of the season. The mystery elements aren’t even touched upon in the first episode. However, that leaves us with an extremely boring pilot. Beth finally meets Jules Latimer’s falsely imprisoned Toni, but even then, no deal is made.

There’s clearly a redemption story for Beth, as she (hopefully), learns to stop being such an oddly contemptuous fibber. But this episode is so weak that it’s hard to believe there’s any reason to go on.

Verdict

Guilty Party’s first episode features an uncharismatic, uninteresting main character. She seems out of place in every room and is ill-equipped. While a main character must have flaws, they also need to be interesting. Beth Baker, an alleged ace reporter, is not given the tools necessary to make us care about Beth Baker. There’s obviously more to her lies (and lineage), but this chapter doesn’t go into that much and leaves us with Kate Beckinsale looking lost in an unformed role.
