Review Before To Watch Hello Tomorrow! Season 2

The comic performances in this retro-futuristic series, about a timeshare broker selling moon properties, are very lacking. Its plot is thin and the pace is slow. It is beautiful, however.

Apple TV+ is trying to have its cake, and eat it too, in this era of weekly v-release binging. Apple TV+’s approach to new series is that it delivers the first three episodes once per week, and then drops the remaining episodes. It is an attempt to entertain those who want to spend an afternoon watching television, but also allows landmark shows such as Ted Lasso or Severance to create a buzz.

This is the problem with its latest series, the retro-futuristic dramedy Hello Tomorrow! It packs a punch. The story is about a duplicitous traveling sales team who sell property on the moon. It explores the fallacy in the American dream of big shiny rockets and beautiful costumes throughout. You are satisfied with the three 30-minute episodes and no longer yearn for more. There is no great cliffhanger to be solved – nor a deep understanding of why these characters are worth the wait.

It has a start that is undeniably captivating. Billy Crudup’s Salesman Jack Billings appears beside a disheveled man at the American diner bar, promising him a brighter tomorrow with a polished sales pitch in a mid-century suit. When he says, “One word will save your life,” the lightest of devilish twinkles appear in his eyes. That word is “Wow!”

The scene progresses with more futuristic details. The waitress looks like Rosie from the cartoon The Jetsons. Crudup is selling cheap timeshares as well as permanent relocations to the “Brightside of the Moon”, a luxurious option for middle-class working-class people. The world is a dreamy Americana, with a year that’s not specified, with black TV and neon-signed diners, and stiff hairstyles. However, it also contains hover cars and space migration and non-1950s racial politics where black characters don’t experience racism and inter-racial relationships are unaffected. Then we see a woman who is collecting her mail from a floating van that has been “driven” by an animated chipper stork. She is then crushed between the van and her garage door. Hello Tomorrow! The unsettling gore does not signify what lies ahead. Instead, the story focuses on Jack’s sales team, which includes Eddie (Hank Azaria), a sarcastic gambler who is addicted to gambling; his secret love interest Shirley (Hanefah Wood); and Herb (Dewshane Wilkins), a young recruit with mysterious connections to Jack. Although all the actors give strong performances, Azaria’s comedy is a bit lacking.

It is a treat to watch them go about their daily business. The 1950s classic cars glide down the streets, inspired by space-age design. Bright pastel homes have Stepford-perfect lawns and kitsch robot helpers make crisp martinis. Although it is a comical representation of the American dream and a slap in the face of all that capitalism has done, we’ve spent nearly a century watching hollow promises come true. The first episode shows that almost every part of Jack’s opening speech is demolished. It’s obvious that this man is just as charming as he is crooked.

It is not clear how a fracture in history led to a timeline that can master space travel, but not color television. The show’s opening credits convey a wonderful sense of the world through a stop-motion cacophony featuring whirring robot cogs and soaring spaceships. It also features wholesome American families set to a somewhat ominous melody. Hello Tomorrow’s most remarkable feat is its ability to communicate. The most impressive feat of Hello Tomorrow! is the way the show’s world convincingly connects. This is understandable because it’s a childlike fantasy from a time in which wifi was more feasible than the moon’s ocean of serenity.

Crudup’s performance in this setting is unquestionable. Crudup is a perfect choice for period pieces. While some actors today have been described as being unsuitable because they “have faces that know about iPhones” [see Dakota Johnson, Persuasion], Crudup’s jawline and hairline are distinctly older-school. Although Crudup is compelling, his layers of intrigue and maniacal intents occasionally peek out from the corners of his wide smile, the plot doesn’t quite catch up to the concept. The production design consistently surpasses the mystery. It moves at a slow pace, and the show’s protagonist should have remembered to say “Wow!”
