Preview Before His Dark Materials Season 4

His Dark Materials has been as epic as it was in season 3’s penultimate episodes, titled “The Clouded Mountain”, where one last battle against the heavens raged.

At the end, Metatron’s unjust rule over the Land of the Dead had been ended. This allowed all the trapped ghosts to escape and allow them to become one with the world. Asriel and Marisa’s sacrifice also saw Metatron killed, further blurring the line between good and bad in this world.

Will finally used the Subtle Knife, to slice into a crystal cube which had fallen to Earth. The Authority, also known as the original angel, was found within. Will’s actions liberated The Authority, which then destroyed every last aspect of religious oppression in this world. Except for one extra religious devotee, which we’ll get to in a moment.

It’s here that His Dark Materials ends with the final episode. This episode, ‘The Botanic Garden’ is far less action-packed, but just as important as the one before it.

The ending of His Dark Materials season 3 explained

The ending of His Dark Materials season 3 explained

Episode seven ended with Lyra and Will finding their daemons, but they aren’t there yet. They’re still a little miffed at Lyra’s treatment of them. Lyra also believes that Mrs Coulter must have died with Asriel, after the death of the Golden Monkey.

Pan and Kirjava, however, are seen watching from afar believing that their human companions are safe. This is not true, as Father Gomez still wants to kill Eve aka Lyra. He doesn’t know that the angels in which he has placed his faith are gone.

Lyra follows her alethiometer as she is accustomed to doing, and eventually meets Mary. Mary reveals that Dust, Sraf, are the same thing. This proves that religious fanatics who believed Dust was Sin were wrong. Like, duh.

Problem is, Dust is now leaking from this universe, which has had a dangerous effect on the whole multiverse.

Lyra must then find a way for Dust to be saved and brought back to the world. Pan isn’t helping her either, as he continues to ignore her since she betrayed him earlier in the season.

Lyra feels lonely and in love with Will the next day. She tries to be intimate with him after they meet up in the water. Things turn a little shaky when Father Gomez appears from the distance and is ready to shoot Lyra.

The ending of His Dark Materials season 3 explained

The angel Balthamos appears just in the right time to kill Gomez’s daemon and thus Gomez himself, abruptly ending the Magisterium.

Lyra and Will get out of bed, undeterred by all the chaos. They fulfill the prophecy about the “love for Eve” that’s destined to heal the world. Serafina sees the Dust slowly slowing down right in front of her eyes, and is the first one to notice its impact. However, they still need more spark to fix the problems. Serafina convinces the Daemons that Lyra is finally going to be with Will.

A happy ending is not possible, however, because Dust continues to escape from all the windows that Will and previous knife bearers created. Angel Xaphania reveals all windows must be shut except one. This window could still work as long as people are creative and aware. This is a wild show, in all honesty.

Will knows that he must return to his world. But, they have to make sure the Land of the Dead remains open for dead souls to cross the threshold. This means that these new lovebirds will have to part ways, giving up their love to one another in order to bring about balance in the universe.

One last kiss creates a storm of Dust around them and Will returns to his world with Mary. They agree to meet up once a year on a bench that exists in each of their worlds. Although they may not technically be together, they will always know that the other exists somewhere else in the multiverse.

A final title card at the end reveals that Lyra and Will both kept their word and sat on the Oxford bench together every year up until their deaths.

The ending of His Dark Materials season 3 explained

“They kept their promise to one another, and went on to live full lives in their own worlds. Will was a successful surgeon and a medical student. Will is a classic, always handy with a knife.

“Lyra continued her education at St Sophia’s College, Oxford,” the card states. “Her teacher taught her how to read the alethiometer …”.”

If you are curious, Lyra lost this gift because it was tied with her innocence as a child, an era which ended when she shook Will’s hand. Lyra, however, was able to learn how to read the alethiometer again through study. “Which would prove useful one day, when Lyra would embark on a new great adventure with Pan.”

Another adventure, eh? “What could it be?” You might be asking, “What could that be?” We were lucky to have a look at Philip Pullman’s source materials so we could figure out where Lyra might continue her journey. Maybe this isn’t the end after all.

Review Before to watch His Dark Materials 4

Review Before to watch His Dark Materials 4

His Dark Materials is a fantasy series that many will recognize as one of the most important fantasy epics. The Golden Compass was released in 2007. It was not a great adaptation of Philip Pullman’s novels. We were correct in a certain way.

The series was co-produced by HBO and BBC. It was a faithful recounting of the events without causing any confusion or annoying loyal fans.

Season 3 is, for the most part a faithful adaptation and retains many of the same hallmarks that made the previous seasons so enjoyable. Some changes may not be right for die-hard book lovers, especially in the final battle. This is totally understandable. The third season maintains a good tone throughout and builds up to a big fight at its end.

The third season is slow to start, so it’s understandable that HBO will release 2 episodes per week and BBC will just throw everything on iPlayer. This is especially evident when you consider that I viewed the entire series back-to-back for this review, rather than waiting each week to see the next set. It’s much more enjoyable to watch the entire series in one go, so it might be worth waiting until all of them are released.

Review Before to watch His Dark Materials 4

In case you are not aware, Lyra is thrust into the middle of the drama as Asriel plans to summon Metatron, an Angelic Authority figure. He plans to wage war against this ethereal being, and to bring as many races as possible to his side.

Lyra is unwittingly forced to fulfill her destiny by embarking on a dangerous quest after being with Mrs Coulter. She becomes a more interesting and well-rounded person this year.

The story builds to a dramatic finale few chapters that wrap it up on a high.

It’s been a while since I read the books. I will admit that there have been some major differences between them and this recap. The story is largely the same as the books. Lyra and Will have a lovely ending that will tug at your heartstrings.

Although it’s not perfect, His Dark Materials suffers from the long wait between seasons to finish this last chapter. Lyra’s and Will’s story comes to an appropriately dramatic and poignant end. There’s plenty to enjoy in this slice of fantasy, even though it won’t blow you away.
