Holly Hobbie, 13 years old (Ruby Jay), is a sweet, simple girl who loves to play the guitar and rails against the excesses of late-stage capitalism. (No, really.) She doesn’t like shopping malls. Holly is happily waiting tables at Calico Cafe with her grandmother when a man dressed in a suit enters. It turns out he is a lawyer and wants to talk to Holly about something important.
Holly later discovers that Calico Cafe is doomed. The cute country joint is no longer popular because no one shops in the mainstream. Holly is stressed because Amy, her best friend (Saara Chaudry), has begun hanging out with Piper (Kamaia Fairburn). Piper is a nice girl, but she has very refined taste. Bikinis! Quirky poems! — conflicts with Holly’s earnest values.
Holly fights to save Calico Cafe even though her grandmother Helen has given up. To drum up business, she creates a crowdfunding page and holds an open mic at her old school. People finally come out to support Calico Cafe.

The thing that caught my attention about the show was the fact that I grew up with Holly Hobbie merchandise and blankets, but didn’t know much about the character’s history. Holly Hobbie’s series of beautiful paintings was the beginning of Holly Hobbie. She was a blue girl in dreamy calico dresses and a bonnet during the 1970s. The one motif became a whole aesthetic. Holly Hobbie was the name of the “girl”, and she soon had her own life.
Hulu’s live-action series draws on a loose mythology that has been developed over the years to support the merchandise of the branded characters. This incarnation of the Calico Cafe is for 2018. It is an American farm business that is in danger of economic collapse. Holly makes use of the internet and her musical talents to raise support for her family’s cafe.
