A door appears to be open and invites a boy who has been bullied his whole life to bravely step out into the unknown. He discovers a treasure trove of valuable artifacts, and a world filled with magic and monsters. However, the most surprising thing is that he can take whatever he wants back to Earth with him. He will soon find that this double life is changing him for good. Tenjo Yuya is subject to severe bullying at school. His family hates him, which is not surprising. His grandfather’s home is his only refuge. This is all he has inherited from his grandfather.

He stumbles upon amazing powers that rewrite the course of his life. It would have been easy for him just to give up and become the most incredible human being ever to exist, taking down all those who have abandoned him. Yuuya doesn’t do that. He believes he is worth nothing after being beaten down so many times.

Yuuya was treated as garbage before he discovered the portal that allows him to power up. He was an unattractive, overweight child. His parents wrote him off quickly after his twins were born. This effectively reduced him to an Ash Lad (male Cinderella). He was a poor eater, ate scraps and wore clothes that were barely wearable. His grandfather was the only light at the end of all this. He did his best in his few returns from Japan after his interdimensional (and perhaps international) travels. Yuuya received everything from him when he died. This allowed Yuuya to at least move into the house of his grandfather. However, this did not change the way he was treated by anyone. Teachers joined his schoolmates in torturing him. Yuuya was the most easy target because he did not fight back. He had internalized the belief of his family that he didn’t have the right.

Some of these things start to change when he finds a strange door while cleaning out his grandfather’s home. He discovers the door and is transported to another dimension, where he receives his inevitable stats and game menu. He receives power-ups that rewrite his body at the cellular level. They also give him strength and skills that he can use in the real world. A normal light novel hero would be happy to prove that he isn’t a punching bag any more, but Yuuya’s condition of PTSD is treated with much more care. Because he sees himself as the unloved, overweight boy he has been all his life, he can’t be that person. Some of his friends have pointed out that he is the only one who doesn’t believe he exists at this moment.

Although vengeance may be wrought, it is mostly a side effect of Yuuya being a decent person. He is actually the first to rescue Kaori from thugs who are harassing her high school student, Kaori. Kaori is instantly attracted to his behavior and, when they meet again, her new physique barely registers. She likes him and wants him to help her because he has helped and is a good person. His outsides are now a match for his insides. That’s not a huge deal to her. It is clear that he sees himself as the person he is, and not his exterior. This is a strong assumption. His interactions with other students and her dad (the principal) are largely focused on him liking them as people and not because he is beautiful.

Although his new appearance does play a part in his life, it’s not the most important. The real villain (once his bullies have been disposed of) will be someone who wants to profit from his looks to make more money for her modeling agency. His bullies don’t seem to care that he’s handsome and strong. This supports the idea that his appearance doesn’t stop them coming after him (and Kaori). There are at least three lovely women who are interested in him, two in the real world, and one in fantasy. But he is too down on his own to believe they are. Kaori, who was the only one to see him before and after, seems to be the most interesting because it is clear that her love for him goes beyond his strength and looks.

Anime

New cast members were revealed by the Fantasia Bunko Online Festival. It had been previously announced that Yoshitsugu Maatsuoka and Akari Kito would be part of the main cast. It has now been revealed that Sayaka Sumbongi will be joining the main cast as Miu Mio. Shizuka Ishigami and Ayana Taketatsu, who will be voicing the characters of Kaede Kazama, and Yukine Hyodo respectively, have been revealed as new cast members.

Light novel

The series was written by Miku and began publication online on the Kakuyomu site on March 25, 2017. It had the tentative title Level up wa Jinsei or Kaeta (reberuatsupuhaRen sheng woBian, lit. “Level Up Changes My Life”). Fujimi Shobo later purchased the series and began publishing the novels illustrated by Rein Kuwashima on December 20, 2018. Yen Press, a publishing house in Hong Kong, announced that the novels were now available for English publication in September 2021.

Personality

Yuuya is a kind and caring person. He doesn’t hate his bullies or his parents. However, Yuuya has an inferiority complex and experiences it every day from his interactions. His past traumas of 14-15 years ago have left him with low self-esteem and a lack of confidence in his abilities.
