Learn More about Made in Abyss Season 2
Riko, an abandoned child, lives at the Belchero Orphanage, in the village. The settlement is built around Abyss, an underground, mysterious pit that plunges into the ground.
The Abyss is home to antiques and the ruins of long-gone civilisations. This makes it a popular hunting ground for Cave Raiders. They make dangerous descents into the pit filled with mist to recover any antiquities. It is dangerous to return from the Abyss because the “Curse of the Abyss”, a mysterious and potentially fatal disease, will appear upon ascent.
The curse becomes more severe the further one descends. Few people who have explored the bottom have ever returned to share their stories. Riko’s mother Lyza, a Cave Raider, is given the title White Whistles. She is presumed dead after a “final fall” into The Abyss.
Riko hopes to be like her mother and become the White Whistle.
Reg is a robot she discovers at the Abyss’ first tier. Riko and her friends sneak Reg into Belchero, and they immediately accept him into their close-knit group.
Later on, many discoveries were made from the Abyss, including Lyza’s White Whistle, pages of observations and discoveries she had made, and a note apparently to Riko claiming that she is at the bottom. Riko says goodbye to her companions and quietly leaves the Abyss, with Reg as her companion. She is desperate to find her mother.
