Preview Before Mirzapur Season 3
Amazon Prime’s “Mirzapur”, an epic gangster story that chronicles the chaos, turf wars and internal power conflict between The Tripathis, the most prominent criminal family in the Purvanchal region, and many of their rivals, returns with a second season. The first season of Mirzapur introduced us to the Tripathis who are the rulers of Mirzapur and manage a huge guns and opium business. It is well-known for its graphic violence, dark humor and characters in varying shades of gray.
The audience learns by the end of Season 1 that there are only “bad guys” and only “evil and lesser evil.” The show was created by the same team that made “Inside Edge” and boasts an ensemble cast of legendary actors who do justice to their roles. We will briefly recap Season 2 of Mirzapur and then discuss the explosive finale and its implications. SPOILERS AHEAD!
Mirzapur Season 2 Recap
Season 2 of Mirzapur picks up right from season 1. Trigger-happy Munna transforms a wedding into the Red Wedding and brutally kills brainy Bablu. Sweety is pregnant with Guddu, a beefy simpleton who escapes with Dimpy and Golu. Munna survives five bullets in his back during the wedding shootout. Kaleen Bhaiya blames the entire thing on Munna’s lackey and Munna gets away with it.
Kaleen Bhaiya and Munna assist with the CM’s pre-election rallies. We see that a seriously injured Guddu and Dimpy are both in distress. A “dead inside” Golu and a traumatized Dimpy have been hiding in a remote building with a bound and kidnapped doctor who is treating Guddu’s injuries. They make a quick return to Mirzapur to visit their grieving parents. Guddu and Golu inform their parents that they won’t be returning until they have taken revenge on Mirzapur.
Guddu and Golu have one goal for the season: to topple the Tripathis from the throne and be the King and Queen of Mirzapur. Beena, Kaleen Bhaiya’s young wife, is pregnant. She tells all three men with whom she has sex – her husband (who has no power), the cook (with whom she has been cheating on her husband) and her father-in-law (who forced her to have sex at the end of season 1) that the baby is theirs.
They live apart, but they are still able to communicate. Beena, with the support of all three men around her, promises her unborn child they will both survive. Munna visits Sharad Shukla, a man from a rival family that has long-standing animosity. She tells him to surrender and to go to the Tripathis. Sharad agrees to do so and swears loyalty, even though he has a plan that will betray them.
Munna falls for the CM’s widowed child while working on the campaign and rallies. They end up sharing a bed. Kaleen Bhaiya discovers that Munna is protesting and gets them married. Kaleen Bhaiya is now more familiar with politics and has greater ambitions. He believes that marrying the daughter of the CM will bring him benefits. His plan goes sour when the CM passes away and his daughter becomes Kaleen Bhaiya’s next CM.
Munna’s story is a compelling and surprisingly vulnerable one. He slowly falls in love and becomes proud of his wife when she is made CM. Beena, Guddu and Golu join forces in Lucknow and become her informant. They are able, thanks to her information, to torch Kaleen Bhaiya’s entire gun factory. The Tripathis also take a direct blow to Kaleen Bhaiya’s opium industry by cutting him off as the middleman. However, this is fixed by the Tripathis in the next scene so it doesn’t add up.
Guddu, Golu and others strike at Tripathi operations remotely during the second season. However, they do not cause any significant damage. They also try to get funds for themselves (to purchase weapons) and recruit loyal servants. They build up their army slowly until it is ready. Then, on Beena’s command, they attack to kill.
Mirzapur Season 2 Ending Explained

Season 2 ends with only one Tripathi man remaining. The final episode begins with Grandpa Tripathi’s death at the hands of Beena (supported and attacked by Radhiya) and Maqbool. Munna claims he will find Maqbool to kill him. Kaleen Bhaiya however tells him that Grandpa Tripathi was killed because Munna acted recklessly in killing Maqbool’s mom in the episode before. Munna has a major argument with his father over Kaleen Bhaiya’s refusal to allow him to sit on Mirzapur’s throne and then he just keeps that in his face forever.
Beena calls Guddu and informs him secretly of the discord among the remaining Tripathi men. She also tells Guddu that it is the best time for him to attack them because the family is weak. Guddu is temporarily impeded by police officers who appear to confront him. However, his father saves him and Guddu soon makes his way back to Golu. In Bihar, Dadda Tyagi, another crime lord, discovers Golu’s illegal opium trade with his younger son. Tyagi orders Chhote (aka Shatrughan), to kill and shoot his uncle for helping him distribute opium secretly as a punishment for his first offense.
One of Dadda Tyagi’s twin sons is killed in the brawl. He assumes that the elder (his favorite Bharat), survived. Munna in Mirzapur believes that his father sent the cook (even though he was working under Beena’s orders), so she goes to the cremation ground to kill Kaleen Bhaiya. Munna cannot bear to kill his father after seeing him so sad and weeping. Kaleen Bhaiya tells Munna that the new King of Mirzapur is Munna.
As Munna begins to accept the throne in Mirzapur as his, Guddu & Golu arrive along with their henchmen. Kaleen Bhaiya is badly injured by them. Sharad, who was nearby, rescues him. Guddu and Golu both kill Munna, Guddu telling him the exact words Munna used before he shot Bablu’s brains out.
They then travel to the Tripathi house, where Guddu takes a seat on Kaleen Bhaiya’s ornate chair (or even throne, depending on your fancy). The final episode ends with a post-credit scene that shows that Shatrughan Tyagi is the one who survived, and not Bharat as Dadda thinks. The younger brother is pretending to be the older one.
Munna’s Humanization

The show’s makers chose to humanize Munna by telling him a cute love story. He talks openly with his wife and shows vulnerability under the mask of entitlement and self-importance. We feel a little sorry for him, as he was raised by violent men and surrounded by enablers his entire life. Kaleen Bhaiya, Grandpa Tripathi and Maqbool make excuses for his actions.
They’ve always done this – they covered up his needlessly violent acts – which enabled him to live his whole life. Munna’s transformation is remarkable when he meets the person who doesn’t give up on him or allow his bad behavior to continue. Munna’s character has been steadily improving since he married Madhuri. We feel slightly sorry for him when he passes away. Very slightly.
The Revenge

Guddu and Golu plan several plots to take down the Tripathis to exact their revenge. But, except for Munna’s death, all their plans fail and they achieve little in terms of actual revenge. They burn down Kaleen Bhaiya’s gun factory. But he builds it again in the next episode. He even puts a spin on it so it benefits the CM’s campaign for election.
They are unable to kill Munna due to the fact that Kaleen Bhaiya and Munna have arrived at the cremation grounds completely unprotected, having sent their armed goons away to settle the matter, father to son. In reality, Guddu’s and Golu’s plans for revenge don’t work and Munna is killed by chance. This is not what you would expect from a show about revenge.
Beena’s orchestrations sound so much better!
She is the mastermind of the factory fire. She plays three men to protect them without raising doubts about her sincerity. Guddu, Golu and Munna should learn from her scheming and revenge plans.
What happened to Sharad? He disappears halfway through the season only to reappear in the final episode to rescue Kaleen Bhaiya. He was set up in Season 1 to be the next Michael Corleone, or a much more watered-down version of him. However, the show loses sight of him halfway through. Sharad was able to escape the scene with Kaleen Bhaiya, so he will be back in the next season. Perhaps he will get his revenge. Season 3 will reveal the truth!

Mirzapur season 2 review

The corpses were piling up by the end of the second season of the blood-splattered Mirzapur (2018). One of the victims was the wrong brother.
Bablu (Vikrant Masey) and his brother Guddu (Ali Fazal), had set out to join the ranks of Mirzapur don Akhandanand, (Pankaj Tripathi). Bablu’s mind-over-matter approach had won him the respect of Akhandanand but also earned him the envy and wrath from Akhandanand’s psychotic son Munna. The final episode of Mirzapur saw Munna blow Bablu’s brains out. He removed a competitor from his path, and was closer to claiming his father’s opium-and-guns empire.
Guddu tells Rajesh Tailang that he wishes that he had died rather than Bablu in the latest episode. There are times in the second season, which is often bloated and ponderous, when it is difficult to feel the lack of balance provided by Bablu (a well-written character, deftly played by Vikrant Masey), at times.
What if the calculating and thoughtful Bablu had survived, instead of his lunkhead brother? Mirzapur 2 might not have felt the need for inventing new characters to increase the intrigue. Puneet and Vineet have yet to finish their show, as these new entrants provide enough scheming, maneuvering, and intrigue to last 10 episodes. A time-bound story about revenge for new wounds, which is similar to a Marvel Cinematic Universe series that goes on forever, is poised to grow into a saga that will continue for a few seasons. It’s all business. Characters keep reminding one another in the latest seasons, directed by Gurmmeet Singh and Mihir Desai. As Munna tried to get the rug out from under his father’s feet, the first season was a mix of comedy and carnage. Kaleen Bhaiya, Akhandanand’s carpet factory, was hiding his true business. But, don’t let that happen.
Akhandanand wants real power and not the one that comes out of a crudely made gun. Not content with ruling this corner of Uttar Pradesh, Akhandanand strikes a votes-for-a-ministerial-berth deal with chief minister Surya Pratap Yadav (Paritosh Sand). JP Yadav (Pramod Pathak), the chief minister’s brother, is outraged by the insult and continues to enjoy the company of his slim secretary.
There are many names on the list of disgruntled. The list includes Ratikant Shukla’s son, Akhandanand’s slain rival. Sharad Shukla (Anjum Shah) is one of those who play a dual-edged game that combines double-crossing and crisscross.
Beena (Rasika Dugal), Akhandanand’s mistress, is more satisfying than Sharad’s inept feints. For having an affair, she was severely punished by her depraved father-in-law (Kulbhushan Kharbanda). Beena sharpens the claws of her fingers and waits for the right moment. Rasika Dugal in Mirzapur Season 2. Courtesy Excel Entertainment/Amazon Prime Video.

Amit Sial, a police officer, and Maurya (police officer) are also in line for retribution. Akhandanand had rudely shown him his place in the previous seasons. Maurya seems to have temporarily abandoned his crusading ways and is now content to sit it out for a few more episodes.
Guddu is at the top of the list. He’s a crippled man who wants to take revenge on his brother Bablu, and his pregnant wife Sweety. Sweety’s sister Golu, Shweta Tripathi, is also helping Guddu in his mission. Golu is a gangster in her own right, and can wield a gun as easily as she handled Hindi novels during the previous season.
Guddu questions Golu if crying makes us weak. It doesn’t make them feel dull, but it is not a problem. While Shweta Tripathi does an excellent job in the second season, and Ali Fazal does a great job portraying Guddu’s emotional landscape, it is too crowded. There are too many competitors.
Sharad’s associate Tyagi, Vijay Verma, joins the team along with his dysfunctional family. Robin, a financial wizard and financier who has a collection of brightly-patterned shirts as well as tall tales about motherhood, is also included in the mix.

The chief minister is also troubled by kinship ties. These are the sources of power and misery in the series. His daughter Madhuri (Isha Talwar) plays an important role in Akhandanand’s never-ending woes. Even Akhandanand’s chief enforcer Maqbool, Shaji Chaudhary, is faced with a responsibility that tests his loyalty to his boss.
The first season’s narrative strand is the strongest. Akhandanand Tripathi is blinded by his father’s perversity, and his son’s limitations because he must pass on his family name. The Tripathis were always the focus of this game of thrones, as Game of Thrones was ultimately all about the fate of Starks. The Tripathi household is where the best scenes are set. There, profanity is served at the table with delicious food and bedrooms conceal terrible secrets. Guddu’s and Golu’s grief process are the most memorable. Mirzapur is at its most powerful when we examine Akhandanand’s balancing act between his family and personal ambition.
Munna can evolve through the generational conflict. Divyenndu is able to slip into Munna’s arms with the same ease he did in season one. Rasika Dugal’s bewitching, ruthless Beena is still one of the most memorable characters on the show.
Its most notable personage is still Mirzapur. Pankaj Tripathi’s Akhandanand is still a charming faux gravitas with business smarts and human failings. While the arena may be packed, the competitors are numerous, Pankaj Tripathi is the Mirzapur king.
The second season’s writers are able to produce meme-worthy dialogue, which lifts many poor scenes with clever lines. They’ve lost sight of one thing in their compulsion to continue towards another season: “Kill your babies.” Many people die in Mirzapur, some who shouldn’t have, and others who had to.
