Remarriage and Desires has all the hallmarks of the genre, such as revenge, affairs and plot twists. However, Remarriage and Desires is very formulaic, and even though there is some late-episode drama, it is still quite mediocre compared to other offerings.

Remarriage & Desires is split into 8 episodes. It centers around a matchmaking business called Rex. They are a matchmaking company that serves the wealthy and high-class. Their levels vary according to wealth and family history. Hye-Seung, our protagonist, quickly learns that morals and personality are completely gone when she becomes involved.

To backtrack a bit, Hye-Seung’s husband Nam-Sik’s suicide was actually the beginning of the story. He leaps off a roof and falls to his death right in front of his wife. Hye-Seung was actually driven to this accident by Jin Yoo Hui, a cold and ruthless lawyer who set him up for the fall to commit fraud. He is also accused of rape, and blackmail.

Hye-Seung is shocked to learn that Yoo-Hui has been beaten up. She signs up for Rex, and she sets out to take down her nemesis. Unbeknownst to Hye-Seung, Choi Yoo Sun, the woman who runs the company has her own plans.

Lee Hyung-Ju (male pillar) and Cha Seok Jin (female pillar) are the two men who stand as pillars of this revenge plot that is overwhelmingly female-centric. Their backgrounds are not revealed, but I will say that they are an integral part of the story.

This show’s first half is essentially a game of Chess. The pieces are strategically placed in the best positions to attack their enemy and moved around the board. The show is full of anticipation, but it never actually pulls the trigger until the last 3 episodes.

This whiplash effect is quite large and it’s not surprising that the show is able to propel itself through its story with such speed considering how slow and methodical it was in the first half. It almost seems like the writers knew the show was ending and doubled down on getting as much action in the final chapters.

However, Remarriage and Desires doesn’t live up to its potential. It takes a while for the characters to be fully fleshed out, and then it is too late. The ambiguous ending may leave some disappointed. Although I won’t spoil the story, it seems that the showrunners are preparing for another round of moving pieces around, hoping to reach a checkmate.

Remarriage & Desires is average on its own. While it’s enjoyable, with a few standout segments, the series feels lost amongst other behemoths in this genre. It is not as deep as Sky Castle, and it isn’t as thrilling as Penthouse. This is somewhere in the middle. There are some good ideas here that have not been explored as fully or as deeply as they could.
