Sort Of Season 1: What’s Happened ?

Sort Of Season 1 review

I was not looking for a Canadian gentle dramedy, with flawed characters whose thorny exteriors conceal their deep compassion and complex inner selves. But Sort Of surprised me in many ways. The series was a joy to discover. It is complex, charming, funny, and real.

Sabi Mehboob (Bilal Baagh, who also created the show) is a non-binary, Pakistani Canadian, part-time nanny, and part-time bartender. She originally trained as an electrician, but she’s still learning. They meet us when Lewis (Gregory Ambrose Calderone) is taking them out to celebrate Lewis’s birthday. Everything seems fine until Sabi surprises Lewis by giving him tickets to a Post Malone concert. This is a truly selfless act and a sign of love.

Lewis begins to talk about how Sabi doesn’t see him and perhaps isn’t trying to see him. All of this sounds suspicious and a lot like deflection. The scene then cuts to Sabi walking Violet (Kaya Kaashiro) to school. Violet keeps talking to Sabi about a girl at school, but Sabi stares blankly at her. Violet repeatedly asks Sabi, “Are You Listening?” Before Sabi responds with a deadpan “Totally.” They then dryly correct Violet for using “deadass” and “shade.”

Then the scene cuts to Sabi on their bed, staring blankly at the ceiling when their sister Aqsa (Supinder Wraich) bursts into their shared apartment demanding to know if Sabi is ever going to return their mother’s phone calls. “It’s not like it’s your gender reveal party,” yells Aqsa as she stomps out the door. Sabi goes back to staring at the ceiling. Next Sabi is with their best friend 7ven (Amanda Cordner) at a small art gallery. Sabi stares fixedly at 7ven’s art pieces–large plant-covered vulvas that Sabi refers to as Chia vulvas–as 7ven repeatedly asks if they’re listening. Finally, Sabi responds with a flat, distracted “totally” before 7ven excitedly shares how she’s been offered a paid internship in Berlin, Germany.

Sabi is fired from her part-time nanny job by Paul Gray Powell (who co-wrote the series). He tells Sabi that the children are getting older and don’t need a babysitter since his therapy practice, which is of COURSE a man incapable of communicating well, is in the basement. He says that Sabi doesn’t have to return after Christmas break. Sabi replies with a cool shrug. “Well, Merry Christmas, to me,” Paul continues, while Paul talks about how it may be difficult to find the right setup “for someone like yourself.”

Sort Of Season 1 Recap

Meanwhile, Grace Lynn Kung, Paul’s wife, cringes and attempts to move away next to him. Bessy was the one who hired Sabi, and they have a deep relationship that transcends work (or words). Bessy visits Sabi in their bartending jobs to use her military-grade interrogation techniques to get Sabi to reveal parts of their emotional selves that they don’t share with anyone. However, Sabi manages Paul’s layoff with calm, perhaps even too calm on the surface.

Sort Of is at its core a coming-of-age story in which everyone is entering their own age. Although the story is primarily about Sabi and Aqsa, I also love stories where everyone can find their own age. Sabi and Aqsa are surrounded by a lifetime of putting others’ needs first. Aqsa is also confronting the reality that she, a Muslim mother, has to accept her role as a mother to a man who holds traditional beliefs, will have to have a nonbinary child. Pre-coma Bessy was experiencing her own life crisis.

Sort Of Season 1 Recap

Her brain is put on pause and her thoughts are then revealed. 7ven must confront misogyny and come to terms with her own weaknesses. Violet and 7ven share a sweet moment where Violet says her first curse aloud. However, if that doesn’t appeal to you then maybe this show is not for you. All of these people are selfish, generous, loving, and sometimes small-minded. This is what makes them so interesting to watch.

About Sort Of

Sort Of is a Canadian television sitcom, released on CBC Television in 2021. Created by Bilal Baig and Fab Filippo, the series stars Baig as Sabi Mehboob, a non-binary millennial trying to balance their roles as a child of Pakistani immigrant parents, a bartender at an LGBTQ bookstore and café, and a caregiver to the young children of a professional couple.

This breakout comedy won a Peabody in Entertainment Category at the 82nd annual Peabody Awards. It also received the Banff Rockie Award as Program of the Year. These awards are in addition to the series’ recognition by the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television (Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television) in 2022. About Sort Of

SORT OF features Sabi (Baig), a fluid young millennial who has many identities. She is the sexy bartender in a 2SLGBTQ+ book/bar, the youngest child of a large Pakistani family, and the de facto parent to a hipster family in downtown Toronto. Sabi feels they are in transition, from gender to love to sexuality and family to career. SORT OF exposes that the labels once used to describe people are no longer relevant… to anyone.

SORT OF, a CBC original series, is produced by Sphere Media (formerly Sienna Films). It was created by Bilal Baig and Fab Filippo who also serve as executive producers and showrunners.
