It is no surprise it has lent itself to repeated stories, including last year’s documentary “The Cave” and this year’s quietly released Ron Howard drama “Thirteen Lives,” starring Viggo Mortensen and Colin Farrell as the heroic British cave divers.

Netflix’s new scripted limited series “Thai Cave Rescue” instead focuses on the local response and the children at the heart of the drama. Created by Michael Russell Gunn and Dana Ledoux Miller of “Designated Survivor,” and shot on location in the real cave system that trapped the 12-member Wild Boars team and their coach, the Thai-language series has a very serious and easily legible emotional beat. However, it sometimes goes overboard by claiming that this incident was tense, scary, and upsetting, making a story that lends itself very easily to drama into tense melodrama.

Thai Cave Rescue Cast

Filmed completely in Thailand by an international group of filmmakers including showrunners and creators Michael Russell Gunn and Dana Ledoux Miller (Designated Survivor); directors Nattawut “Baz” Poonpiriya and Kevin Tancharoen; and executive producers Jon M. Chu, John Penotti, John Logan Pierson, Lance Johnson and Tim Coddington the series will unravel the boys’ stories, and those of their families, over the course of six episodes. 

Papangkorn “Beam” Lerkchaleampote who died in April stars as Coach Eak, Thaneth “Ek” Warakulnukroh plays Chiang Rai governor Narongsak Osottanakorn, and Urassaya “Yaya” Sperbund and Manatsanun “Donut” Phanlerdwongsakul are Kelly and Pim, fictional representatives of the real-world hydraulic engineers and park rangers that made the unbelievable rescue possible. Filming took place in the real boys’ homes, and stars local actors as the Wild Boars players:

Thai Cave Rescue Release Date

Thai Cave Rescue is set to debut on Netflix on Thursday, September 22, 2022 at midnight PT. It’s a six-part miniseries directed by Michael Russell Gunn and Dana Ledoux Miller. The series will be directed by Kevin Tancharoen and Nattawut Poonpiriya.

On August 30, 2022, Netflix released the official trailer for the miniseries. It opens ominously on a rainy day, with a character asking, “How bad will it be, midday?” to which the other replies, “It’s almost 40 millimeters and continues to increase. We need to let TMD know ASAP!”

The trailer then describes the rescue efforts to save the junior soccer team and its coach. It is full of stunning visuals that capture the horrors of the event. All the main actors are spectacular in their roles.
Overall, the trailer has a gripping and emotional tone that fans of survival dramas like Cast Away and Gravity would undoubtedly love.

Thai Cave Rescue Plot

Together with the trailer, Netflix also shared a brief description of the series on its official YouTube channel, which states:

Inspired by the unbelievable true story of the Thai youth soccer team that became trapped in one of the most dangerous cave systems on Earth, and the extraordinary efforts of their families, Thai people and volunteers around the world as they battle nature and time to save them.

In 2019, Netflix obtained the rights from 13 Tham Luang Company Limited, an company set up to oversee the story rights of rescued members of the Wild Boars soccer team, to produce the series. Although numerous films have been produced referring to the events, Thai Cave Rescue is the only production that has been granted access to members of the Wild Boars and will feature their views on their ordeal.

On August 23, 2021, the series’ production team arrived at Tham Luang-Khun Nam Nang Non in Chiang Rai province to prepare for filming. Filming was completed in the real homes of the Wild Boars team members as well as in the cave itself.

Netflix’s Thai Cave Rescue, an invigorating story of heroism and hope, is directed by Thai director Baz Poonpiriya with Thai-American director Kevin Tancharoe. It will examine the stories of heroes who worked on the mission. Netflix’s iteration marks the fourth story of the rescue mission amid MGM’s Thirteen Lives with Nat Geo’s The Rescue and Tom Waller’s indie film Cave Rescue (previously titled The Cave).

The 12 young Wild Boars players are portrayed by local actors with Papangkorn “Beam” Lerkchaleampote as Coach Eak, Supakorn “Tok” Kitsuwan as former Navy SEAL diver Saman “Ja Sam” Gunan, Thaneth “Ek”  Warakulnukroh as Governor of Chiang Rai Narongsak Osottanakorn, with Bloom Varin as Medical Officer Colonel Bhak Loharjun.  The international cast includes Nicholas Farnell as John Volanthen, Rodger Corser as Dr. Richard “Harry” Harris, Nicholas Bell as Vern Unsworth, Damon Herriman as Dr. Craig Challen and Christopher Stollery as  by Rick Stanton.
