Review Before To Watch The English Game Season 2

The English Game is a sport biopic that takes you back in time to see the birth of football, and then shows how it evolved into the giant that it has become today. The tendency to slip into a more traditional period piece is what often makes this idea seem quaint. It feels more like Downtown Abbey with a glossy facade of football.

The story begins in the late 1800s when a Darwen working-class football team brings in Fergus Suter (Scotland) and Jimmy Love (Scotland). They change the town’s fortunes and, with it, pressure the Old Etonians who are attempting to win the prestigious FA Cup. The English Game has 6 episodes that cover transfers, money and class wars, as well as everything else.

The multifaceted story eventually serves to dilute the footballing “rags-to-riches” narrative by introducing subplots that aren’t very interesting in terms of plot progression. These subplots, which range from Arthur’s wife Alma’s crusade for adoption to Fergus’ Father’s stumbling down to Glasgow to wreak havoc, feel like a lot of work and, at worst, take away from the football story.

The penultimate episode is the most dramatic. It takes 40 minutes to build up to two semi-final matches, before it fades to black. Although it isn’t a major issue, the creators should have used this time to highlight the FA Cup’s rise.

The characters are strong enough to last you six episodes. Although the commentary on class, and the stark divide between them, is a bit too much, it rings through every crucial scene. While these cuts between the sides are great for keeping things interesting, the show sometimes stifles from getting into the nitty-gritty of some of the issues.

The English Game is visually stunning. Even though some scenes with the first match of football are contrived, the costume design, musical score, and dialogue do a great job of capturing that time period.

The English Game isn’t quite gritty enough for a great period drama, and it is too mellow to feel like a good sport biopic. While there is some enjoyment here, it is difficult to avoid the many historical errors. However, the show will not have a lasting appeal.

It isn’t bad enough to feel like an individual goal. Nor is it a thrilling 4-3 match in the Champions League. The English Game is a mildly entertaining 1-1 draw that has enough talk points to make it interesting but not memorable enough to be a standout match at the conclusion of the season.
