The Good Lord Bird is where Ethan is the center of attraction. Ethan’s presence in any scene is a huge draw. Ethan’s presence alone brings an energy to the scene that keeps your attention on the screen. Ethan isn’t associated with the series as an actor, but he also created the series.

John Brown’s long, sometimes extended prayers that can last from noon to dusk are one of his most memorable and hilarious traits. John Brown’s motley crew prays to God that John does not start chanting prayers at any time. Onion says, ” John the Old Man (John was a terror in the prayer department).

A second absurd characteristic is his obsession over Biblical Verses. He is his instant ally if he tells such verses to others. John is like a religious man who is too enthusiastic to believe that everyone has a duty. John has an obligation to end slavery against the will of Jesus Christ. He believes and feels that all men are equal in their birth and should be treated as such. All people are children of God.

Identity Crisis – Core Of Characterization

A well-written narrative is the key to great character development and characterization. John’s character isn’t very multilayered. Although his arc is not particularly impressive, it is justified as he must maintain a certain persona/energy in each scene. The character arcs of Henry and Onion are well-planned.

One of Canada’s most striking scenes shows Onion in a dilemma over whether she should support John or not. Harriet Tubman, an African political activist, addresses Onion’s concerns. He is told by Harriet Tubman that slavery starts a chain of events which leads to enslavement spreading across a group, generation and sometimes even a country. It cannot be traced back to one person, and it is not a battle of individualism. John isn’t trying to be a hero, but to spark a movement of millions who fear fighting for their rights.

Onion, a teenager, believes that individualistic gains and pursuit is more important than the pursuit of happiness. It is therefore very difficult for him to comprehend John’s actions. He could easily go and live as a black man free to choose his own life and dress like one, but John has to be a woman, and read the Bible every single day he doesn’t want. Onion is in constant conflict. These conflicts become part of the comedy and drama that is the show. It’s a pleasure to watch characters who are conflicted and divided between individual and collective goals. It is evident in Onion. John even tells him that having doubts does not make you weak. It makes us more human.” Thus, a character with internal conflict is more humane and engaging.

John is not the only character who shows signs of Identity Crisis. Frederick Douglass, a black political reformer, asks John how he can understand slavery’s pain when he has never been in bondage and never been savaged. John says, “I can’t speak for the enslaved.” John says, “But I can speak for slavers’ deeps and shallows.” John felt these emotions in his childhood. He then verbalizes that slavery is the exploitation of human rights that any human being can experience if he has any remorse.

John is frequently questioned about why he, a white man, is fighting for a community that he doesn’t belong to. John tries to explain that this isn’t a community. It is a group of human beings who are all children of God. They are his brothers and sisters. John’s character was involved in many other conflicts in order to keep the story moving and keep it engaging. Onion is a key character arc and evolution. John and Onion are the only characters that are easy to forget.

There are many narratives in the form of films and television that revolve around the same theme, but what makes The Good Lord Bird stand out? There were very few scenes in which I fell from the chair. Mostly The Good Lord Bird has a comedy that keeps the humor in the setup while moving on to serious matters later. The first three episodes show John’s quirkiness. It’s hilarious to see Onion trying to hide his sexuality. Onion and Frederick Douglass are discussing whether or not to help John while they drink. Frederick’s wives visit him during the conversation while Onion watches. You would be shocked at the hilarious turn of events in this particular scene. This is a funny, memorable sequence.

Review before To Watch The Good Lord Bird Season 2

Showtime has not given “The Good Lord Bird” what you might call child-glove treatment. It was originally scheduled for February 16, but it was pulled. The show was then rescheduled for August 9, and pulled again. It will premiere this Sunday, but it won’t be much of a surprise. It’s an unusual treatment for a prestige miniseries that is based on a National Book Award winning novel. It stars one of America’s most talented actors.

It’s a shame because “The Good Lord Bird”, a seven-episode adaptation of James McBride’s 2013 novel, is excellent entertainment. Ethan Hawke, who co-created the series with Mark Richard, plays the central role as John Brown, the messianic abolitionist.

The reasons for the delays can only be speculated upon. However, the show was ready before the coronavirus struck. Perhaps there was some anxiety about the story’s irreverent depiction of slavery and the attitudes and actions taken by Black Americans in pre-Civil War America. As the turbulent events of 2020 unfolded, it was possible that there was some anxiety about telling such a story in a series created by two white men based on a Black writer.

We can now see that any concerns were not justified. Hawke and Richard, who worked with an established Black writing and directing team, including Darnell Martin, Kevin Hooks, Erika L. Johnson, and McBride, have been more respectful of the book’s themes and plot. There are some dull moments in “The Good Lord Bird”, which could have been avoided if someone was more creative and ruthless in remaking it for the screen.

McBride’s novel tells the story of Brown, the zealous defender who attacked Harpers Ferry, Va.’s federal armory in 1859. This is the comitragic finale of the series. It’s told through the eyes of a young slave named Henry, who is mistakenly renamed Henrietta and most commonly known as Onion. He is then accidentally freed and informally adopted by Brown.

Brown, as shown in “The Good Lord Bird,” is sympathetic for the human race, but isn’t always attentive to their individual members. It’s symptomatic when, after mishearing Henry’s name, he becomes convinced that the bright, young boy is a woman and orders him to wear a gown. This confusion is not only a problem, but it’s also a lifesaver as Henry (played by Joshua Caleb Johnson), survives one potentially fatal situation after the other.

Henry’s Huck Finn-like, picaresque journey begins in his Kansas home. It includes a fun encounter with Frederick Douglass (Daveed Diggs), Harriet Tubman (Zainab Jah) while on a trip to Canada to recruit fighters, and the devastating but pivotal incident at Harpers Ferry which led to the Civil War.

The Good Lord Bird is not only a coming-of age adventure, but also a sharp, tart examination on racial oppression, guilty consciences, and all sides. It’s a handsome costume drama that deals with the true history of Brown’s campaign, and the events at The Armory. The last three episodes comprise the bulk of “The Good Lord Bird”. Although many historical events and people are included, the show presents them in ways that may make historians uncomfortable.

Henry’s advancement sometimes takes him away from Brown. Johnson’s scrappy and appealing appearance is a plus, but the show falls apart when Hawke isn’t there. Brown is a character whose motivations, importance and sanity remain elusive. Hawke is able to accelerate without warning into passionate sermons and well into sentimental tears. Hawke cuts through the contradictions, emphasizing a theatricality which doesn’t diminish Brown’s sincerity, but is inextricable with it. Hawke conveys Brown’s deeply religious and humanist convictions with passion, despite his inquisitive mind.

Diggs is commanding and funny, making Douglass, the 19th-century media star and abolitionist, the villain of Henry’s piece for refusing to fully support Brown. He is both mesmerizingly poetic and comically vainglorious. “The Good Lord Bird” is a collection of small, sharp performances including Wyatt Russell, who plays the brave J.E.B. Stuart, Orlando Jones as a frightened railroad porter, and Brooks Ashmanskas (a descendant of George Washington held hostage by Brown’s raiders).

Crystal Lee Brown (“Black Lightning”) is especially moving in a few scenes portraying Sibonia, a slave who pretends to be mentally disturbed. In the second episode, Hooks directs her short story. It ends in one of the most dramatic scenes of the show, a quiet spasm in violence to Nina Simone’s cover of “I Shall be Released”, where the horrors and complexities of American life are seen in the expressions of the observers.

It’s not as explicit as viewers might like in its condemnations and affirmations, but that’s still a plus. It tells the stories of Henry Shackleford, John Brown, and Black suffering and forbearance, as well as white guilt and redemption. Henry refers to Brown to white characters as “He ain’t going to rescue us, but he’s trying to save YOU.” The series is full of intelligence and verve.
