Over the course of 10 episodes, Season 5 of The Handmaid’s Tale witnessed a lot of major changes in our characters. June is determined to exact revenge at the beginning of the season; Serena takes her turn as a handmaid; Aunt Lydia shows tenderness towards Janine after a near-death experience; Commander Lawrence, once June’s ally, seems more difficult to trust.

These twists and turns will be a great preparation for the show’s sixth and final season. Although it isn’t yet in production, fans hope that it will answer some important questions. The most important question is: Will June save Hannah from Gilead’s hands?

What happened to June and Luke?

Episode 9 shows how June, who survived a mass shooting, is confronted by anti-refugee sentiments in Canada. She is walking on the street right in front of her home. After Mark Tuello visits her, a driver chases her and runs her over. He then smashes her arm on the pavement. That image haunts me still. Luke sprints to the street, beating up the driver and resulting in him being admitted to the ICU. June is also rushed to the hospital. Luke is questioning her and she’s unconscious when Nick makes a secret visit to the hospital bed. More on this later.

After she returns home, June wakes up to chatter in her sleep. Rita, Moira and Luke discuss the death of Mr. Thorpe (the man who struck June with his truck), which means that Luke effectively killed him. This tragedy places him and his family in serious danger. He is a refugee from Canada who murdered a Canadian citizen on Canadian soil. Protesters will be furious and pursue them. June has a solution. They must run. Luke isn’t keen to leave Hannah but June reminds Luke that they can’t help Hannah if they’re not there. Mark interrupts as they pack their car and rush to get to the airport. He informs them that American refugees are currently heading to Toronto, and that the government has plans to send them west on trains. He can bring June and Luke aboard.

Tuello transports Luke, June and Nichole to the station. June asks Mark to inform Nick that she is safe. He obliges. They shuffled through the crowd heading for the trains, but Luke stayed back when he saw the authorities standing on the platform. He knows that Nichole and June will be taking him away, so he doesn’t want to jeopardize his wife’s chance of escape. Police are looking for other passengers to see Luke as June and Nichole make their way to the front of the queue. He says he will stay behind, which she calls him before she boarded. Luke stands firm, despite her protestations. It almost seems as though he didn’t intend to take the train. June finally gives in and tells Luke, through tears, “Come find me.” After exchanging I love yous, Luke hangs up and calls the police.

June, carrying Nichole on the train, is telling her great things about Hawaii, their destination, and she’s accompanied by Nichole. The train stops when they hear a baby crying behind them. Serena is holding Noah’s infant son.

What is Serena doing there, exactly?

In episode 10, Serena isn’t seen until the final scene. June runs into Serena on the train. She even asks Serena if she has diapers. How did Serena get there, though? Episode 9 shows Serena running from the Wheelers at a fertility center. She said that she was only going to take a second to feed the baby. After being left alone, she ran out of the building carrying Noah and got into a car with a stranger. She appears to have made it to the station. It is unknown how June and she will fare on their train ride.

Where is Janine?

The other handmaids are beginning to notice Aunt Lydia’s preference for Janine. She tries to downplay the situation by approaching Mrs. Putnam who is now married to Commander Lawrence to accept Janine as her handmaid. Mrs. Putnam allowed Janine to visit Angela in the past but doesn’t want Janine living at her house now. Aunt Lydia convinces her that Janine’s adoption would be a good example of Gilead branding and make her appear strong, patient leader.

Janine does not want to be posted at her house. The prospect of reuniting her with her daughter is a great option. They arrive at Commander Lawrence’s house in the middle of a party (perhaps a bridal shower?). Angela is not there, however. She’s staying with her grandparents during the summer. Mrs. Putnam states that Janine must “prove herself” worthy to stay in her home for a trial period. Janine can stay if Mrs. Putnam agrees. Janine smiles and nods, gritted her teeth.

She is told by Martha that June was struck by a truck at the party. She reports that she is alive but that “they want her to die in Toronto”. Janine is shaken. Janine is so shaken that Mrs. Putnam offers Janine a place in her bedroom and calls Janine a “friendly face”. She then snaps at her. “That’s not what my name is. She snorts, “And we’re certainly not friends.” She continues, “I think you are the worst person I have ever met.” I am not your friend. Naomi, I hate you. How can you not?

Clearly, Janine does not pass her trial period. Aunt Lydia advises Janine to ask for the job back. But Janine refuses. The Eyes arrive on Commander Lawrence’s orders to take Janine with Lydia before Lydia can continue another lecture. They ignore Lydia’s protests, but they don’t stop. Janine is muzzled, cuffed, and thrown in the back of a truck. Her destination is unknown. Lydia is left to seethe.

What’s the deal with Nick?

Nick is seen with Mark Tuello during the night and appears to have accepted a deal for his freedom in Canada. He refused to listen to June’s pleas for freedom. He couldn’t leave behind his wife, who was pregnant. It seems he has changed his mind. Mark drives him to the hospital to visit June, who is still in a vegetative state. He spends a minute at her bedside and then leaves, without her even knowing.

Nick signs a contract with Mark, confirming their agreement. He also promises that he will keep June safe. He is aware that Gilead will make June suffer. Nick trusts Mark believing he is nothing to June. But Mark assures Nick that this is not true.

Next, Nick storms into Commander Lawrence’s home and punches him in the face. Nick says to him that he could have killed her, referring back to June’s truck attack. Commander Lawrence retorts that it wasn’t his choice. He could have had something to do with it or knew about it, surely?

Rose, Nick’s wife, meets him and tells him to stop leaving. She says, “You claim that you are a good husband but a good husband wouldn’t leave his pregnant spouse every time his girlfriend calls.” He is enraged by her words. She is certain that Nick will not let June go, no matter what he does. She says she no longer wants to be with Nick. He is beginning a new chapter in his life, and it’s safe for us to assume the same for all of them.

The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6 Release Date

The release date of The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6 remains uncertain like many other original Hulu series. The season’s current development phase means that it is not yet ready for release. It will take time for the writers to complete the season, and cast members will have to introduce new characters once more.

The show will debut in 2023, or early 2024. The episodes will run on average between 41 and 65 minutes. It is anticipated that the series will grow after the fifth season’s finale. This will establish the plot, and close the storyline in a manner that is both satisfying to the characters as well as the viewers.

The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6 Cast

The Handmaid’s Tale’s principal cast is expected to return for its final seasons. Elisabeth Moss will return as June Osborne, while O-T Fagbenle (as Luke Osborne) will be back. Max Minghella will likely reprise his role as Nick, June’s confidante and ex-boyfriend. Ann Dowd will return to the role of Aunt Lydia, the conflicted aunt.

Storyline of The Handmaid’s Tale: What could it be about?

Season 5’s tagline was “Some sins can’t be washed away”. But it could have been June’s words in this finale: “America wasn’t Gilead until then, and then it was just too late.” This was the warning and justification for the story that saw our hero get chased from the sanctuary and away from the husband she’d spent four seasons trying to reach.

It would be sad that this show didn’t protest June’s storyline timely and effectively. Although June’s storyline is valid, it was happier than the possibility that her character might be used to dramatize an asylum experience is too real to ignore. The Handmaid’s story becomes the refugee’s tale. The story of June is now a mirror to the stories of real refugees, who thought they had found stable ground only to discover it was sand.

Do you recall Emily being clapped by strangers as she entered the Toronto hospital? The applause quickly turned to jeers and violence. The Handmaid’s Tale is slowly raising Canada’s intolerance. June was forced to leave Canada before it boils with Gilead’s help. The Waterfords’ fan group was first followed closely by the Wheelers (proving that no society should allow anyone to be wealthy enough for their own army), street harassment, and finally the angry men who wield guns. Canada is not Gilead yet. It could, and might. It is a sad, but very true conclusion.

Even though the ending was dark and bleak, it highlighted goodness and love. Three men gave their lives for June and Nichole. Mark Tuello risked his life to get the couple on the train. Nick and Luke gave up their safety and freedom for their daughter and the woman they love. (Nichole is in a relationship with her fathers, and we demand that the sitcom end.)

Two fathers and a mother plus what Serena means to that little girl – doting auntie, ex-kidnapper who gives you a Bible every birthday? The train carriage reunion was a pleasant, witty contrast to the sad goodbyes of June & Luke. Serena’s “Hi Juni” moonstruck encounter with June’s ‘Seriously’ Her? Her eyebrow-raising cut through the intensity, setting the scene for the next chapter. The road trip looks set to return for season six.

Is it possible that Serena will interpret this coincidence to mean that June is her heaven-sent angel? June Osborne is unable to shake Serena, which is the harshest punishment this series has ever given. It’s certainly the most hilarious.

It was clear that the car attack was not funny. Elisabeth Moss, the finale director, has many sickening ways to depict her character’s pain. A horror movie trick that makes terror movies silent and whistling wind make nearly every scene prior and subsequent to the attack look ominous. June has been the main character in every scene since the beginning of the horror movie. She is also the film’s last girl.

Or, you can choose from one of the options. After five seasons of fighting, Janine still struggles to keep her mouth shut. She was able to bounce between obedience and rebellion while Aunt Lydia cared for her. Janine, like June with the New Bethlehem proposal, turned down the mandated, supervised time she was offered with a child she would have to pretend wasn’t hers and instead allowed Naomi Putnam to have both barrels. Ever Carradine was Naomi’s total ignorance about being a baddy. That was enough to make that moment so memorable. Nearly felt sorry. Almost.

Lawrence was not given sympathy for Gilead’s June target. (See that bumper sticker on the SUV? This regime’s branding has been consistent. Lawrence did this at least once before. In season four, he voted for the Chicago air strikes which nearly killed June and Janine. This betrayal did not please Nick. He contemplated his conscience and made a decision to ignore it. He could choose to watch Gilead murder June or Nicole or accept Mark’s invitation to be a US spy. Finally! Finally!

Nick must get out his cell before he can bring Gilead down from the inside. Lawrence will repay the favor from the season 4 opener by opening the door. Bradley Whitford and his child will not be on Gilead Ascension, it is uncertain. A home that is no longer an art-filled intellectual sanctuary but one that caters to independent minds and is a ‘Daba Daba Dab’ confection of roses frills and pastel macarons where Marthas are beaten down and taken off by the Eyes.

Lawrence is gradually losing his accomplices in Lawrence’s new conformity. He has lost June and Nick, as well as most likely Aunt Lydia. Janine won’t be forgiven for his conformist order. June is now bound with complicity she didn’t want and in a boat (read as refugee train). Her former tormentor. We wish Miss Osborne a speedy recovery and one more season to this story. In the spirit of magnanimity, I presume, we also wish Godspeed Mrs. Waterford.

How many seasons of The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6 is there?
