Preview OF The Night Agent

The Russians have created a mole inside the White House. This leaves Peter Sutherland, a surveillance specialist, as the only person who can stop them.
Peter, the son of an incorrectly disgraced FBI spy chief, whose alleged treachery had tainted his own career, is surprised to find a job at the White House Situation Room. He is assigned to watch a special phone during the early hours in case someone calls with an urgent message. After nearly a year of phone-sitting, Rose Larkin calls him, a young, panicked woman who just fled the bullet-ridden home of her uncle and aunt. They were believed by the Russians as counterintelligence agents to have a highly sought-after red ledger. Rose finds Peter charming because of his caring nature. He becomes more committed to Rose’s welfare, even if it means lying to his superiors as those he believed he could trust turn out to be untrustworthy. He is tempted to turn to his basketball friend, President Michael Travers, for assistance. Quirk is able to keep things moving, even though some spy stuff seems so routine that it’s almost silly. However, the thrill and surprise that Quirk has created in his previous thrillers like Cold Barrel Zero (2016) are missing. Quirk is not known for his ability to draw characters with depth. The paper thinness of Peter (who disdains the Hardy Boys and often seems to be imitating them), and Rose (one of Rose’s main roles is to indicate when Peter is bleeding) is disappointing.

Quirk attempts to imagine the Russians taking Washington over in the shortest time possible. However, the book is not a complete reflection of current events and reality prevails over fiction when it comes to possibilities such as the enemy possessing a sitting U.S. President.
Review of The Night Agent

The Night Agent is a spy novel and political thriller that you have to read. Matthew Quirk’s book is a fascinating read. From its captivating opening chapter to double agents and the intricacies of D.C. politics, you will race through it. It will not be easy to put down and you won’t regret it once it’s finished.
Quirk’s new novel feels like he has been writing political thrillers for decades. He hits on a timely plot which starts quickly and speeds up as it unfolds. Readers will relate to Peter and Rose and feel the tension and suspense built up by the characters. This novel can be read as a standalone. However, Quirk’s former journalism career means that he is taking a new direction. Readers will hope he moves away from action and military thrillers and instead pursues more political stories like this…. Delivers the first high-stakes and nail-biting political thriller for 2019.
The action moves at a cinematic pace thanks to Quirk’s aptitude. Peter is half-hearted and will disappoint those who expect nuance. Readers who are looking for an up-to-date view of relations between Russia and the U.S. will still be pleased.

Quirk is able to keep things moving, even though some spy stuff can be considered silly. However, the thrill and surprise that Quirk has created in his previous thrillers like Cold Barrel Zero (2016) are missing. Quirk is not known for his depth of character design. The paper thinness of Peter (who is emulating the Hardy Boys) and Rose (one whose main role is to point out when Peter’s bleeding) are disappointing. Quirk attempts to project the Russians taking over Washington. However, this book is somewhat in line with current events. Reality beat fiction, however, to the possibility of our enemy possessing the U.S. president.
