Scott Smith created The Peripheral, an American science fiction streaming television show. The series is based upon the 2014 book by William Gibson. Smith, Athena Wickham, and Vincenzo Natali are also executive producers of the series, as is Greg Plageman, Jonathan Nolan, and Jonathan Nolan. The debut of the first season was in 2022.

The Peripheral Before Season 2

Before approaching The Peripheral Season 2, let us make a small summary of the last season.

The Peripheral season 1 summary

Flynne finds herself in an espionage world while roaming in futuristic London in VR.

A voice guides her to the Research Institute’s data, and she is able to steal a valuable secret that people would die for. Flynne is then introduced to Aelita West (Charlotte Riley), who is the voice. The game begins to feel a bit too real when Flynne is implanted with stolen RI data, which she then transforms into bacterial DNA.

In 2099, London has been rebuilt after a series of global catastrophes known collectively as the “Jackpot”. Someone has opened a door from Flynne’s future, potentially putting both timeframes in danger.

Flynne is introduced to other villains along her journey.

They include Dr. Cherise Nuland (T’Nia Mills), who works at the Research Institute, and Zev Lubov, who is head of the Klept (JJ Feild), a mafia-type organization. Wilf Netherton works for Zev.

Flynne is recruited by him to search for his long-lost sister Aelita, who we learn in episode 1 has implanted Flynne’s bacterial DNA data. The Klept used her to steal the Research Institute’s most secretive, and best-kept, information, namely the ability to manipulate behavior. Flynne may have found it accidentally or intentionally stored in Aelita’s eye. We, as viewers, don’t know.

Flynne had multiple timelines and plans at work as the finale approached.

Lev Zubov (JJ Feild), discovers that Flynne holds RI’s missing data, which can be used to help the Klept build a new world. After Ossian (Julian Moore Cook) injures him, Ash (Katie Leung), his assistant, seeks revenge. She informs Dr. Cherise Nuland about Flynne’s missing data, which makes Flynne everyone’s number one target.

The Peripheral ending explained

Flynne’s plan is to kill herself to save her world (or Stub, as it’s called in the game) from the ‘Jackpot’. Flynne is held captive by Dr. Cherise Nuland of RI and Klept’s Lev Zubov so it seems she’s doomed to die whenever she attempts.

She forms an unlikely alliance with Ainsley Lowbeer, Metropolitan Police Inspector (Alexandra Billings), and plans to kill herself to save her 2032 Stub. Dr. Cherise is temporarily thrown off her feet by creating a new parallel Stub in 2032, in which she continues living.

Flynne believes that her death in 2032 North Carolina Stub would wipe out the bacteria DNA. This would stop Dr. Cherise from unleashing the ‘Jackpot’ in the original timeline and allow her to save her loved ones.

Flynne leaves the peripheral and we can see a flashback of her speaking to Conner (Eli Goree) to tell him to pull the trigger. This will make it appear that Inspector Ainsley killed her, so the Met Police can claim credit. Flynne does all this to convince Dr. Cherise that Ainsley is her friend, while concealing the fact that Flynne & Ainsley conspire to destroy the Research Institute.

Wilf (Gary Carr), meanwhile, is reunited with his long-lost sister Aelita. However, it is marred with sadness as she explains that the Klept killed their foster family.

She is determined to take down the Klept and seeks revenge. They only need Flynne’s bacterial DNA data. This is much easier than it sounds, as Flynne is still alive in the parallel Stub 2032. Unfortunately, viewers aren’t told if Flynne’s data was transferred with her.

The Peripheral Season 2 Release Date

On October 21, 2022, Amazon Prime Video released the first season. The series was renewed in February 2023 for a second season. The next season is not yet scheduled for release.

Although the second season will likely have the same number of episodes as the first season, the developers have yet to make an official announcement.

The Peripheral Season 2 Cast

The cast includes Eli Goree playing Conner, Charlotte Riley playing Aelita and JJ Feild portraying Lev. Adelind Horan portrays Billy Ann Baker. T’Nia Mills plays Cherise. Tommy Constantine is played by Alex Hernandez.

We will also see Louis Herthum playing Corbell Pickett, Chris Coy playing Jasper, Melinda Page Hamilton portraying Ella, Katie Leung playing Ash and Austin Rising as Leon.

What might happen in The Peripheral season 2

We can only speculate at the moment about what will happen in The Peripheral Season 2, but we can anticipate more from Gibson’s novel. Star Gary Carr told us to expect unexpected outcomes.

He said, “The thing about Jonah and Lisa [executive producers] is that they set up things, they take you along a journey for one year,” he continued. “Then, you get to the second season and they go completely left or take you somewhere else that is so far from what you had previously.”

Some people find that too scary, while others don’t like it. It’s something I love about watching a series. There are no boundaries and so many worlds to explore. It’s almost like you aren’t limited to one story or one structure. Your imagination is your limit.

Charlotte Riley said: “They are really ballsy with this. They are great at going, “You love all these characters?” Great! They don’t even exist anymore. There are many other characters.”

“I don’t think that this is what will happen, but it’s something I love about them. They don’t mind killing their darlings for what the audience wants.”

Review Before You Watch The Peripheral Season 2

The trailer for The Peripheral was released. It promised a sci-fi experience with a captivating story and a polished experience. The first season of the show fulfills all of these expectations. However, the second season is disappointing.

The Peripheral is a fictionalized account of Flynne Fischer, a young girl who lives in a small town in 2032. She enjoys playing virtual reality video games, called sims. She and her brother beta-test a sim that takes them into a wonderful new world. Flynne quickly realizes that this world is not virtual. It is the future.

The series of 10 episodes starts well enough. You are transported to Clanton, USA in 2032, and London in 2099. The Clanton scenes are surrounded by a yellow fog, while future London is adorned with the polished steel-and glass look that you would expect in a futuristic setting. The sci-fi series has all the visual checks: sophisticated robots and high-end tech, as well as appropriate avant-garde fashion.

The high production value is captivating, but the narrative drags viewers away. It feels like there are five distinct storylines at any one time. Each of these stories is fascinating on its own, whether it’s the relationship between a nephew’s abusive uncle or the betrayal of a political-motivated assistant. But they don’t fit together to make a larger picture. It is difficult to find a balance between all the stories, which leads to a confusing structure.

To further skew an unevenly-paced show, The Peripheral also features a lot of one-on-one conversations. They talk a lot to one another. They talk a lot about the past, the future, violence, and memories. Some of these conversations were very moving and led to some memorable moments on the show. However, the majority of them dragged the show down without providing any insight.

Creators of the show mentioned that they wanted to emphasize the humanity of their characters. Although these conversations are a great effort, they fail to make an emotional impact. Some of these conversations are merely telling, rather than showing.

Because of the show’s intriguing and unique characters, the weak narrative feels even worse. T’Nia Miller’s charm as the antagonist is captivating, and Eli Goree does an excellent job playing Conner, the disabled. Charlotte Riley’s Aelita wins the award. She is a perfect mystery thanks to her wit and inscrutability. It’s unfortunate that she is given so little screen time. It’s also a shame that Wilf Netherton and Flynne, the series’ main characters, didn’t make it onto this list. They are both compelling characters, but they lack personal growth, so the series ends feeling a bit flat.

This series couldn’t decide what it wanted. There were many options. One was a contemplative look into the relationship between technology, humans, and how it affects one another; the other was a post-apocalyptic world with three primary political powers in constant conflict with each other; the third was a battle between past and future that reflects colonial issues mixed with romance. The show instead tries to combine all three into one, which is like combining three delicious meals into one.
