Nothing is quite like watching a former cast member return to spice things up, as we have seen in everything from Shetland Series 6 to Line of Duty’s returning member Anna Maxwell Martin.

The Split season 3 is Hannah’s story about her ex-boyfriend Christie. He returned to their relationship just before the finale and caused Nathan’s divorce.

Christie invited Hannah to New York with him and he expressed his love for Hannah. He didn’t seem able to grasp the romance of asking her to move to New York with him.

It is, in essence, a soap opera about people with nice kitchens who make a mess out of their lives. The show also airs divorce cases, which gives rise to celebrity cameos (Donna Air here, Lily Cole here) but that’s only the background. Hannah Walker (the main protagonist) is surrounded with her sisters Fiona Button and Fiona Rose, who need a job and chaos Nina Scholey and Anne Scholey (Annabel Scholey), despite being a shoplifter as well as a dippy Rose Walker (Walker).

Nina, who is now sober, had a baby with one of her sisters’ clients and is now having an affair. It’s a soap. Rose is faced with infertility. She contemplates adoption. But then, something terrible happens to Rose – I won’t tell you what in case you’re still intending to watch it.

Hannah and Nathan (Stephen Mangan), are now separated. Hannah is having second thoughts, despite Nathan signing up for an infidelity site, having an affair, and just ending an affair. Nathan has a horrible new girlfriend, who we are ready to hate.

Scenes that are true to life show how the couple’s amicable separation soon descends into rancor. It’s hard to believe this scene is possible. How does the law office manage to deal with all this madness? It doesn’t matter. It’s enjoyable.
