Although I wasn’t a huge fan of television shows, I was intrigued by The Expanse and decided to give The Travelers another chance. It was a decision I do not regret. The series is perfect in every way. Actors and actresses in this series are exceptional people, who are also kind and possess a lot of talent. Everything, from the concept to the writing, the camera work, the soundtrack, and the effects, is flawless.

What is the Storyline of Travelers?

The science fiction series “Travelers” uses time travel as its setting. Five travelers travel from a dark and depressing future to follow the instructions of a mysterious “Director.” They can project their consciousness onto a dying person or someone about to die.

Each squad consists of a scholar and a doctor, as well as two soldiers and a commander. One random person of the same gender receives their consciousness as the future individual. They pretend to inherit the host’s life and complete their task.

Perhaps a reset was needed. As consciousnesses sent from the dark future, glimmering doubts began to emerge. Could there be any hope that the Director will succeed in its mission to save humanity from extinction?

No matter how you feel about the choices made by the writers and characters, there are many questions regarding what actually happened in the final minutes of each episode. Some might argue that the finale could be a series end if Travelers isn’t renewed. However, the possibilities that remain open are just as exciting as they are disturbing. Were we destined to see our team reunited against all odds? Or is it too unlikely that the future Traveler 3468 has set in motion for us could be re-created? Here’s what we think we know.

Marcy and David

The bus scene at the end of Season 3 may have offered hope for those who wished for a happier ending to fallen hero David Mailer. But was it truly happy? This Marcy isn’t Traveler 3569. This is Marcy Warton (pre-brain damage), the nurse. David may have had a soft spot in his heart for Marcy, but he seems to be able to build relationships with his entire staff — he’s just an average guy. The Marcy he fell for was not from the future. It was the bad-ass FBI nurse, not the Marcy who he fell in love with. Traveler 001.

One might argue that this Marcy shares more with David than David, who is a social worker who seeks to help the less fortunate. David could also be criticized for beginning from a physical attraction in either situation. As a viewer of three seasons of Travelers, can it be enough for a social worker to feel happy with a Marcy rather than our Marcy? Agent Yates’ warning to MacLaren that the team did more harm to him than good is true. It must be enough. His involvement with the travelers was responsible for David’s heroic death. Perhaps he is happier this way.

Grant and Kat

Kathryn was the same. She eventually realized that Grant was not her husband. Her regrets about meeting Grant at the wrong time and place led her to find a way to get out of the disastrous mission. They also gave Traveler 3468 an opportunity to apologize for his actions in stealing his wife’s happiness. He could have been the first Grant Kat knew, but instead he left, allowing Kat the chance to be with John, the artist, and not someone who would have to travel on secret missions.

Kat also mentions that John is late to their rendezvous for the Grant-reboot 2001. John “gets lost in his work” so her marriage might end up looking very similar to Grant’s. Maybe that’s her style! This doesn’t mean that we won’t be seeing Leah Cairns on Travelers season 4. Patrick Gilmore, as in the previous example. In a reset timeline, creating the need for a social worker or restaurateur could prove difficult. This could mean that two of your favorite characters will have to say goodbye.

Helios and 9/11

In the last moments of the episode, Grant completes two tasks. The first is to give an envelope to Samantha, the young scientist who invented clean energy. The envelope bears the word “Helios,” which refers to the asteroid set to collide in 2018. Grant believed that Samantha would be able to alert scientists about the imminent danger if she was smart enough.

Grant then heads to the Twin Towers on September 11 to stop Traveler 001’s arrival. The keen viewers will recall that the test cases were supposed to arrive in Anthony Corrigan’s body, which we see in the finale. Instead, they ended up in Vincent Ingram, an IT guy. It’s not clear how Grant managed to send Vincent the crucial email, but it’s possible that he succeeded in stopping the Director from completing his failed mission.

Grant left the World Trade Center in the midst of the destruction? He glances at his watch to see that it is ten minutes until the first plane hits. Technically, his job has been completed. He doesn’t have any reason to continue living his life in Protocol 5. He does make an attempt to leave the office, but we will have to cut to Marcy or David. We could end up with Grant MacLaren, who paradoxically recalls the previous timeline from Season 4. This could be the catalyst to make a soft reboot more relevant.

Traveler 001

After Jeff Conniker’s interrogation, but before he was discovered behind the cinderblock wall, it is likely that Traveler 001 had overwritten the other traveler within Jeff Conniker. This was a successful attempt to entrap Marcy, and to obtain her backdoor code to access the Director. But the real question is what Jeff meant when Marcy killed herself.

This could mean that the Faction was led by an inanimate benefactor who was as technology-based as the Director they detested? Why did the Faction bring down the Director, who was supposedly unable to trust in his ability to solve the future and accelerate the apocalypse? Although the use of nuclear weapons to blind the Director was a hostile takeover of Archives, it also guaranteed that the future would remain post-nuclear winter with an artificial leader just as dictatorial as the one they defeated. Ironic to the extreme.

Traveler Program Version 2

Discussions on Reddit and elsewhere suggest that the first three seasons of Travelers were merely simulations run by the Director and we have simply been following the predictive algorithms of artificial intelligence. It was possible that the process of seeing version one fail could have occurred in nanoseconds, in the distant future, before any traveler was sent back. The Director could not avoid the problem of being able only to send consciousnesses back in time to the point after the last traveler. This makes a reboot impossible.

The failed mission never started, except in this new timeline. Grant’s email confirms that Traveler 001 is not present on the Internet. This is because Traveler 101, as we know him, was never sent. Grant might think that stopping the traveler program and delivering the Helios warning was enough to secure a future without the Director, but climate change and other factors will continue to devastate the planet. Time travel is necessary to solve the problem.

What will version 2 look like? This is not a question you can answer here. But, can there be a plan that can survive contact from the past? Is there a way to ensure that any iteration, including the first one, doesn’t go off-track? How can any scenario bring together the particular team of Grant, Trevor and Philip and Carly and Marcy? We must trust the Director, just like the travelers. Or at the very least, a director with a lowercase-d, a writing team and Travelers‘ executive producers Brad Wright or Eric McCormack.

Travelers ended with the Director sending Grant MacLaren back into 2001. However, Traveler 001 (played by Enrico Colantoni) was not sent back in time to start the first phase of the Travelers program.

We discovered that 001 was a proof of concept experiment for the traveler’s original idea earlier in the series. His mission was to travel back in time to September 11, transmit a message to a computer in the World Trade Center and then die as the building was attacked by terrorists.

MacLaren arrived at the facility before the scheduled time and immediately informed the Director that the Traveler Program would not be successful. “Don’t transmit 001.”
