Although Year of the Rabbit may be too archaic to fit in the period’s time slot, it is not a parody of costume drama. The film veers from absurd to gruesome, and back again – it has childish gags, violence. It is difficult to invest in Rabbit’s character: he is a junkyard dog, cartoonishly dissolute and coarser than wholegrain mustard. He’s not convincing enough – unlike Berry, Toast which is a masterfully comic creation – to keep your sympathy from scene to scene. His swearing is so constant that it becomes desensitizing.
