Sakuragi Yaeka as a Mediator In The Yakuza’s Guide to Babysitting

Being a 6-7-year-old child with limited autonomy, Yaeka does not get that many opportunities to truly shine as an INFP; for example, she cannot yet find gainful employment that reflects her Mediator personality, nor can she be in a committed relationship with a romantic partner. Even so, some of Yaeka’s most inspiring, healthful moments in the Yakuza anime undoubtedly reflect her shy but compassionate nature as a Mediator, including her best moments with her gentle moe babysitter Toru, her comatose mother Miyuki and even other children such as Sara and the toddler Hina.

Yaeka is a shy but well-meaning child who always wants what’s best for others, and if other people are angry, upset or anxious, the sensitive Yaeka might be affected too and say or do whatever she can to help, from drawing a colorful picture to offering them toys to play with or anything else a child her age might do. A personal example includes her mother Miyuki, who cannot move or speak when Yaeka and her father visit the hospital. INFPs like Yaeka crave intimate relationships with others, but Miyuki cannot even greet her daughter or look her in the eyes, which means Yaeka feels so alienated that she once feared her mother hated her.

Happily, Toru made up a story to explain all this, and the sensitive Yaeka felt better. She will not rest easy until everyone loves her and is her friend. Anger, hatred and disappointment aren’t welcome in Yaeka’s INFP world. Later, when Toru felt that he was a monster with no redemption, Yaeka joined Kei and Toichiro in lecturing Toru, firmly assuring him that he is indeed a good person that merely makes some mistakes sometimes. Yaeka has a strong, friendly rapport with Toru as an INFP, and she can’t stand to see Toru being insecure or upset like that. Yaeka gently but earnestly told Toru that he is a good person, and Yaeka trusts him to be a proper friend and babysitter for her. It worked, and Toru found inner peace at last, which also fixed his damaged relationships.

Sakuragi Yaeka's MBTI Personality Sort: INFP, The Mediator

The Yakuza’s Guide to Babysitting was an enthralling comedy anime of the Summer 2022 anime season, starring a small but lovable cast of wholesome, likable main characters. The protagonist, the tough but compassionate mobster Kirishima Toru, was asked to become his boss’s daughter’s babysitter, and the two of them soon bonded as kindred spirits. Sakuragi Yaeka is best described as a Mediator, with the character code INFP. This stands for Introverted Intuitive Feeling Perceiving, which means Yaeka is a naturally withdrawn and quiet person who is sensitive to the emotions and perspectives of other people, all while having a flexible mindset.

That is roughly similar to Toru’s own personality type, the ISFP Adventurer, which is why they get along so well despite their enormous age gap and different upbringings and lives. The one real difference is the Intuitive part of Yaeka’s character, with Yaeka being more imaginative than Toru and dreaming up new ideas on how to help people or work out solutions to their problems. In contrast, an ISFP is more focused on the here and now. The Mediator is one of the gentlest and most compassionate personality types there is, being a quieter and more deliberate version of its extroverted cousin, the energetic ENFP Campaigner type.

Both types are fixated on daydreaming of new ways to understand and thus help other people, using their creative imagination to improve society in any way they can. The key difference is that while Campaigners love to meet numerous people and quickly move from one idea to another, a Mediator like Yaeka is more withdrawn and focuses on one problem at a time. Mediators love to help people on a one-on-one basis, forming fewer but deeper connections than a highly sociable ENFP Campaigner. There is much to like about the Mediator personality type.

These people are delighted to listen to the needs of a friend or member of a family and work out ways to help them, all while being perfectly attuned to that person’s emotional state, worldview and desires. INFPs are comforting and reliable, which makes it easy for people to confide in them and get the support they need.

INFPs greatly value authentic self-expression, which means they are creative about expressing their true selves while also helping others come to terms with theirs. Mediators also tend to dream more than act, so they may feel frustrated if they do not accomplish enough deeds to help other people who need them.

Happily, Mediators are wonderfully open-minded, passionate and idealistic about what they do, so anyone can confide in them and accept their help. An INFP should be careful not to burn themselves out in the process, though; they only have so much to give, regardless of how noble their intentions are. That is a weakness they share with the ISFJ Defender type.
