The story is set between 1987 and 1994 in Yonkers, New York, a city north of New York City in Westchester County, and focuses on efforts to desegregate public housing.

Federal judge Leonard B. Sand ruled against Yonkers and issued a desegregation order, mandating that public housing for 200 units possibly scattered-site public housing (“SSPH”), which became the example of new public housing be built in the middle-class, mostly white, east side of Yonkers.

By 1988, the city had already spent $11 million in legal fees fighting against the order, including a failed effort to appeal to the Supreme Court of the United States. The case and resulting politics resulted in national focus on issues of race, class, and housing.

Mayor Nick Wasicsko ran on the platform opposing the judge’s order, but before taking office, in the face of the issue being supported by a federal appeals court, became an advocate for desegregation in Yonkers.

Best Lawyer Series

Wasicsko and the city councillors who supported him worked out a plan to meet the court order, using the SSPH system to build the 200 homes at eight different sites of only 25 homes each, spread across a city with more than 10,000 homes.

Despite this, four councillors a majority refused to vote to uphold the law, consistently opposing any limited desegregation. For refusing to follow the court order, the city of Yonkers was crippled by heavy, possibly bankrupting fines estimated to be close to $1 million a day from a compounded charge that started at $100 a day.

Basic services stopped and parks and libraries were shuttered, with 630 city workers facing mandatory lay-offs in order to maintain enough budget for police and fire services. There were ongoing protests, including Wasicsko and others receiving death threats, such as letters containing bullets with a note that “You won’t see the next one”. Wasicsko was forced to comply. The suit was finally settled in May 2007.

Fairly Legal

Fairly Legal

Fairly Legal stars Sarah Shahi as Kate Reed, a young woman who changes her profession from lawyer to mediator and works at the San Francisco law firm her father started. As the series opens, Kate’s father has just died, leaving his young widow Lauren in charge as Kate and the firm adjust to the loss.

Kate and Lauren, who are approximately the same age, generally engage in comical banter while attempting to work together, and the development of their relationship is a central focus of the series.

According to Shahi, the characters “take a couple steps forward and then take gigantic leaps back”. She has also stated that their history divides them at certain times, and bonds them at others. “At the end of the day, they would give the shirt off of their backs to help the other person, because they are family”.

They also investigate the abuses of children, the disabled and elderly victims of non-sexual crimes who require specialist handling, all while trying to balance the effects of the investigation on their own lives as they try not to let the dark side of these crimes affect them.

Its stories also touch on the political and societal issues associated with gender identity, sexual preferences, and equality rights. While the victim is often murdered, this is not always the case, and victims frequently play prominent roles in episodes.

The unit also works with the Manhattan District Attorney’s office as they prosecute cases and seek justice for SVU’s victims and survivors with precision and a passion to win and bring closure to the intense investigations. The series often uses stories that are “ripped from the headlines” or based on real crimes. Such episodes take a real crime and fictionalize it by changing some details.

Law & Order

Best Lawyer Series

Is an American police procedural and legal drama television series created by Dick Wolf and produced by Wolf Entertainment, launching the Law & Order franchise.

Law & Order : Criminal Intent

Law & Order : Criminal Intent

Criminal Intent follows The NYPD Manhattan “Major Case Squad”, a force of detectives who investigate high-profile cases (in most cases, murder, kidnappings or major robberies), such as those involving VIPs, local government officials and employees, the financial industry, and the art world.

This series in the franchise is notable for its heavy focus on the motives and actions of the criminals, paralleling the investigation with scenes of the suspects’ lives that show the audience circumstances that the investigators can, at most, only attempt to deduce.

Each episode features a cold open of the victim and suspects in (at most) a few days leading up to the crime; these scenes are presented without context, and maintain suspense as to the perpetrator’s identity and often motive, until the ensuing investigation reveals these.

Best Lawyer Series

However, some episodes reveal the offender at the start, while leaving out other key details and presenting a puzzle, over which the detectives labor, and agonise, to discover; thereby they provide the plot conflict of the episode, and (usually) the resolution of the case: solving the crime, and (likewise) insinuating a plea, or verdict, of “guilty”.

Occasionally, however, either the detectives resign themselves to conviction being infeasible or an acquittal or dismissal dramatizes the limits of criminal prosecution. Unlike other Law & Order series, most Criminal Intent episodes end with the detectives eliciting confessions, rather than continuing to the trial phase.

Ally McBeal

Ally McBeal

This series features an upscale Boston law firm in which play characters all more delirious than each other, with a thirty-year-old lawyer with an unbridled imagination, Ally McBeal, in mind. Many important scenes outside the court are framed by the firm’s mixed toilets, or the bar that lawyers attend every night to decompress.

Most episodes are built on a set of mirrors between a case dealt with in court and the very complex sentimental life of the cabinet members. The trademark of the series is a very free tone and a humor sometimes stripping, bordering to the absurd, often grumpy but not free of gravity and psychological depth. The unconscious of the protagonists is the subject of very imaginative visual gags.

Each youth was convicted by juries of various charges related to the assault; four were convicted of rape. They were sentenced to maximum terms for juveniles except for Korey Wise. He had been held in facilities and served his time in prison.

They filed a suit against the city in 2003 for wrongful conviction and were awarded a settlement in 2014.

Boston Legal

Boston Legal

Boston Legal follows the exploits of former Practice character Alan Shore, and his passionate co-workers, at the fictional offices of Crane, Poole & Schmidt. The high-end litigation firm, based in Boston, handles both civil and criminal law cases.

Best Lawyer Series plays on the chemistry between smarmy Shore and loose cannon Denny Crane. Middle-aged Shore is wry and wily, while mid-70s Crane (suffering from early dementia) is flamboyant and eccentric. Shore often uses questionable methods to win cases.
