Draco Malfoy from Harry Potter. Many iconic characters are part of Harry Potter. There are many characters that fans and casual movie-goers can instantly recognize, from The Boy Who Lived to Voldemort. Draco Malfoy is one of the antagonists of the series. He appears in all of the films and the Broadway play where his son is one the main characters and heroes.
Draco, one of Harry’s first students to meet him on the Hogwarts Express “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” is a famous character who was attacked by a hippogriff and attempts to stop Harry from going to school in their sixth year. He was also seen freaking out over a spider and being transformed into a ferret by Hermione’s wand. Tom Felton played the role of Draco on screen. He even channeled Draco’s personality in his first encounter with Emma Watson.
Although the pure-blood is best known for his bullying behavior, there were times when he was not so bad. Many people don’t know much about him, such as the fact that he was averse to the ideals his audiences are familiar with. As we board the Hogwarts Express, grab your trunk and join us in discovering the truth about Draco Malfoy.
He is the only child
It shouldn’t surprise that Draco is an only child. Although it is not known if Draco intended this, a look at his family tree shows that Lucius, his father was also an only child. The Slytherin often talks about his aunts, uncles, and cousins from his mother Narcissa’s family. However, the only relative he mentions from his father’s side is Abraxas, his grandfather. Draco is continuing this trend with his son, having only one child.
Narcissa is the third of three daughters and has a large family. Rowling’s family tree, which is archived by The Harry Potter Lexicon shows that there are many people, including Harry’s godfather Sirius Black who have been exiled from the tree. This amounts to them being called traitors. Even with these exiled individuals, the Black family is larger than the Malfoy and very few couples have only one child.
Named after the stars
He inherits his father’s name as an only child, but his mother gave him his name. Narcissa, a Black mother, was also born to Bellatrix and has a unique theme for her baby names. Narcissa, her only child, was a House of Black member who named her children after constellations or stars. Draco, which in Latin means “dragon”, is a constellation first described by Ptolemy, a Greek astronomer (via Constellation Guide). It can be seen from any part of the Northern Hemisphere at any time of the year, as it is in the northern sky.
The character almost had a different name, as did many others in the series. Malfoy, which in French means “bad faith”, suits his character well, but his original name was Spungen. It was removed and made Spinks in Rowling’s original 40-student list. Then it was again crossed out, only to be reinserted as Draco Malfoy. Rowling admits that Smart was one of his working names, even though it is not listed on the original 40 character list. It has a more ring to it (via Wizarding World).
His family is closely associated with nobility
The Malfoy family’s roots go back to Normandy, and the Norman Conquest in 1066. Armand Malfoy was part of William the Conqueror’s team and offered what is believed to be a magical service. There was no Statute of Secrecy at this time so wizards were able to show their magic to the Muggles. It is not known what Armand did for Duke of Normandy, but wizarding historians have determined that it was not always honest work (via Wizarding World).
His ancestor was forced to assimilate into Britain and its culture. He sought to be a flatterer of the nobility and wealthy, and worked his way into their circles. The patriarchs were able to build a wealth family by flattering the nobility and wealthy individuals.
Many of his traits were inherited from his descendants, as audiences have learned. Armand did dubious work for an invading nation, sought power and prestige with any person he thought worthy, and believed that he and his family were better than other wizarding families or the Muggles. It’s not surprising that Draco behaved the way he did when he was young. The fact is it has been in his family tree almost a century.
The double standard of his ancestry
Although they hated Muggle-born wizards and witches, even before the Statute of Secrecy was adopted, they tended to align themselves with Muggles of wealth, high status, and power. Lucius Malfoy, the first Lucius Malfoy, even attempted to marry Queen Elizabeth I. The Malfoy family is open to doing whatever suits them. At one time, they were connected with Muggles that they considered worthy of their support or friendship. These social networks were so important to them that they were against the Statue of Secrecy’s enactment via Wizarding World.
Rumours even suggest that the Malfoys accumulated their wealth using Muggle means. They would have used Muggle assets like the London Stock Exchange to build wealth, and then had it converted into wizarding currency by Gringotts. They used their in to acquire Muggle land and added to their estate. William the Conqueror, Muggle, gave them the manor that their family still lives in. They wouldn’t be where we are today without Muggles (via The Gamer).
Future generations of Malfoys will deny that any of this has ever occurred, but history and the evidence are not on their side.
He nearly went to Durmstrang
Durmstrang Institute is best known as one of the participating wizarding schools in the Triwizard Tournament during Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. It is well-known for the types of wizards who often graduate from the school and their loyalty to their headmasters. Gellert Grindelwald was a student at the school. He is one of the most famous Dark wizards ever (via Wizarding World). Although the school is listed as being in Northern Europe and visitors are required to erase their memories so they can’t be led back to it again, Rowling stated in an Accio-Quote interview that it was probably in Sweden or Norway.
Draco tells students of the school that his father considered sending him to Durmstrang instead of Hogwarts when he visited Hogwarts in Draco’s fourth-year.
You’ll be able to tell.” He went because his family knew the headmaster and to continue their Dark Arts education. His mother did not want him to travel that far away from his home, so the Slytherin didn’t go. It is not clear why she didn’t want her son to go to school abroad. This could have been due to their loyalty to Voldemort or their place in the British wizarding society. Or it could simply be that she wanted her son close to her home.
His family didn’t buy tickets to the Quidditch World Cup
The Malfoys seem to have no desire to spend much, despite all their wealth. They attended the Quidditch World Cup in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. This is a major example. Arthur Weasley says that the stadium can hold 100,000 people. However, the Malfoy family was able to secure seats in the Top Box. After a substantial donation to St. Mungo’s Hospital for Magical Maladies (the wizarding hospital), the three were invited to be Minister of Magic Cornelius Fudge’s special guest.
It is rare to get a chance to sit in the box of the Minister of Magic. Because Arthur had connections with the Department of Magical Games and Sports that only Ministry workers had, the Weasleys were able secure tickets to the Top Box. Lucius is not a Ministry worker, so he had to find a way to get one of the 20 seats. It was a great way to make a difference. The Minister of Magic is a Top Box member, which only enhances their image. Why would one of the most wealthy wizarding families sit in regular seating?
He supported Umbridge’s control of the school
There were many changes in leadership positions at Hogwarts during Draco’s fifth-year at Hogwarts. It was only a matter time before an elite group of students under the leadership of a professor in Defense Against the Dark Arts emerged. Dolores Umbridge was a pink-clad woman who taught a sub-par Defense Against the Dark Arts class. She also founded the Inquisitorial Squad of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.
Umbridge personally selected the squad of students to perform her dirty work. They could not only take away students’ house points, but could also open and inspect mail. It shouldn’t surprise that the entire group was made up of Slytherins who were happy to report directly to Dumbledore. They were able to bully students by taking points away from Harry because he doesn’t like him. This would not have been possible if Draco was under the guidance of another professor or headmaster.
He is an expert in Occlumency
Harry starts taking Occlumency lessons from Professor Snape in his sixth year to protect his mind against Voldemort. Although he is terrible at it, he still makes an effort. Rowling confirmed that Draco was the only character who wasn’t terrible at it. In an interview with MuggleNet 2005, the author stated that Draco “would be very gifted at Occlumency.” Draco is someone I think of as someone capable of compartmentalizing his emotions and his life, which I have always done.
Snape attempts to get into Malfoy’s mind in “Harry Potter the Half-Blood Prince” and it turns out that the young Malfoy is able to use Occlumency. Draco tells the Potions Master that he does not want Voldemort to “butting in”.
It is possible that his aunt Bellatrix was the one who taught him to hide his inner thoughts. Snape wasn’t the only one to have done this, and there isn’t any evidence that either his parents were skilled enough. It was vital that he could hide his thoughts about Voldemort’s mission because it was critical that no one knew. You would want to keep the secret if you wanted to kill the headmaster.
Voldemort’s punishment was his father’s failure to fulfill the task
Voldemort doesn’t often give teenagers such a critical task. Why was Draco trusted with killing Albus Dumbledore by Voldemort? He wasn’t. His father was to steal a prophecy from the Department of Mysteries that spoke of Voldemort’s eventual defeat. He was unable to stop Harry, Ron and Hermione from stopping him.
Lucius was imprisoned at Azkaban for his error. Voldemort ordered Draco to take the Dark Mark in order to make sure he was aware of how badly he had messed it up. He didn’t expect the teen would survive the effort. It was the ultimate punishment for Lucius as he had no other way to help his son. The mission was successfully completed, even though the Slytherin wasn’t chosen to complete the task as Snape and Dumbledore carefully planned.
However, the Malfoys didn’t regain their status as Draco wasn’t the one who cast the spell against Dumbledore. Lucius was able to escape Azkaban along with the rest Death Eaters. However, he had to surrender his home and give Voldemort the wand. The Malfoys began to reject Voldemort.
After attending Hogwarts, he studied Alchemy
Draco was not like many Malfoys. His family’s wealth meant that he didn’t have to work. To pass the time, Draco decided to pursue academic pursuits rather than joining Dark wizards like his father. He enjoys reading alchemical manuscripts but not actually doing anything. He does read the instructions for creating the Philosopher’s stone, but he doesn’t attempt to make it himself (via Wizarding World). Although Alchemy was taught at Hogwarts for NEWT-level students, it was not widely available when the Slytherin attended.
He didn’t abandon some family interests, however. Although he did not follow the same religious beliefs as his parents, he maintained their wealth and luxury lifestyle. The Malfoys owned several antiquities collections, one of which was filled with Dark artifacts. Draco preserved the collection, making sure it remained in the Malfoy family after the war. The Ministry raided Draco’s home during Draco’s second year at Hogwarts to try and find the collection. Lucius built a secret underground room in order to keep the Ministry from finding his collection.
His wife died from a blood curse
Many people believe Draco married Pansy, but he actually married another Slytherin student. Astoria, the younger sister of Daphne Greengrass’s peer, was Malfoy’s young bride. They had a son together, Scorpius Hybrid Malfoy. He attends Hogwarts with the Golden Trio’s children during the epilogue to “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.”
His parents didn’t approve of her. They wanted him to marry someone who shared their values, even though Astoria was from the Sacred Twenty-Eight. Draco and the Greengrasses worked together to overcome their prejudice against Muggle born wizards. This did not go down well with Lucius and Narcissa. Their son stood firm against them and got married to Astoria.
Their marriage didn’t last long. A curse was placed on one of his wives’ ancestors. The curse, described in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, was a curse that acted as a blood curse and could manifest at any moment. Astoria became weaker after the birth and died the summer before the third year of school for Scorpius. The Malfoys were forced to withdraw from the outside world due to Astoria’s fragile condition and rumors about their son’s father.
He did not raise his son with pure-blood mentality
Draco and Astoria believed that pure-blood wizards were superior. However, Draco & Astoria decided not to pass these beliefs on to their son. Instead, they raised Draco to be more open to Muggles and to accept wizards and witches who aren’t pure bloods. This caused some tension at family events as the older Malfoys held onto their beliefs, despite changing their views about Voldemort after the war (via Wizarding World).
This more open lifestyle allowed Scorpius to make friends with those his grandparents considered “blood traitors” or unworthy of their friendship. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child sees him become friends with Albus, Harry’s son, who was sorted into Slytherin unlike the rest. Instead of mocking him or making him feel excluded, Scorpius is thrilled to have Albus as a friend on the journey to Hogwarts. Due to the many rumors about their lives, neither of them are very popular. It’s highly unlikely that Scorpius would have been friends with Draco if he had taught him the same values as he did. He would also likely bully him for being the black sheep in his family.
