Broadchurch Plot: What’s it all about?

The series’ first season focuses on Danny Latimer’s murder. Every person in Broadchurch, a close-knit community, is under suspicion at some point. Danny’s father Mark is one of the main suspects, although his whereabouts on the night of the murder remain to be proven. In the end, it was revealed that he had an illicit relationship with the B&B owner. When their working relationship becomes strained, it is revealed that DS Miller was in line for DI Hardy’s activities. Her husband Joe is revealed to be the murderer.

The second season starts and Joe is found not guilty. After two months of intense courtroom drama, Joe is released by the jury. As Danny’s father Mark and Nige, the child killer suspect, capture Joe and threaten him with a death threat. Ellie asks him to leave. Finally, he is exiled permanently from Broadchurch due to fear of his death.

We also witness a resolution to Detective Investigator Alec Hardy’s obsession with the Sandbrook case. We learn that Ricky Gillespie intentionally murdered Lisa. After discovering Lisa in a tussle with Lee Ashworth, he crushed her head to the ground. Under the instruction of Claire Ripley, Lee Ashworth executed Young Pippa Gillespie who was present at the crime scene.

The third season focuses on confronting the rapist who raped a local woman. Eight episodes of confusion and red herrings later, Clive Lucas (Sebastian Armesto), a trophy-gathering taxi creep, is revealed to be the offender. He was actually covering for his high-school stepson Michael (Deon Le-Williams), and Leo Humphries (Chris Mason).

Leo, who later admits to his crime arrogantly, turns out to be the main suspect. As DI Miller struggles to recover from the events, we finally see that Leo is the main culprit. Hardy attempts to comfort her by saying that Leo is a disturbed human being and that others shouldn’t be judged through his eyes.
