Who Is Edward Elric?

Edward Elric is also known as Ed or Fullmetal Alchemist and is the main protagonist in the Fullmetal Alchemist series. Ed, who lost his left arm and leg in a failed Human Transmutation effort, became the youngest State Alchemist by attaining his certification at twelve years old. Ed is now fully engaged in his quest for the Philosopher’s Stone. This item will allow him to restore his brother Alphonse, whose entire body was destroyed in the aftermath.
APPEARANCE

Edward is very small for his age. He stands at 149 cm (4’11”) at series’ beginning. This is despite his attempts at appearing taller (due to his inability to drink regular milk). His golden-blond hair is long and tangled in a braid. Sometimes he will go for a shorter ponytail, while other times he may wear it down to his shoulders. He parted his bangs so they frame his face as they fall.
In the middle of the parting he leaves one strand of hair sticking out like an antenna. Chapter 56 reveals that he did this to increase his height. Ed’s eyes are also gold, which is a sign of his Xerxesian ancestry. One of the Fullmetal Alchemist artbooks reveals that Edward wears all black to hide any oil stains he might have gotten from his automail. Ed is shown to have a thin horizontal battle scar above his right eye. This scar remains because subsequent battles cause his sensitive skin repeatedly to tear open.
The scar seems to have completely healed by Chapter76. As the series progresses Edward’s facial features (his nose, chin and mouth) start to resemble his father. Edward appears to have grown significantly in height, with Winry being several inches taller and Alphonse being about equal in height. The 2003 anime series ends with Edward Elric’s Earth version. He is identical to the storyline except for his short hair.
AUTOMAIL
After his alchemical dismemberment Edward received full steel prosthetics custom made by Pinako Rockbell . His left leg extends from his knee to the floor and his right arm extends all the way to his shoulder. Both are designed to look like modernized plate mail. After Edward visits the northern region, he is fitted with new cold-climate automail limbs. They are made of carbon, which prevents frost damage, and lighter to aid Edward’s movement. Both models are significantly thinner than previous versions.
The limbs also have a prominent silver tint, making them more lustrous than their steel counterparts. Edward retains his automail leg, and the scars left from the installation of the arm are indefinitely on his right side. In Conqueror and Shamballa Edward is equipped with a gas-powered, automail arm from Hohenheim to use on Earth. Earth does not have automail. The film is thin and skin-colored to blend in with Edward’s body. However, when the gas motor is turned on – giving Ed more power and movement with his arm – heat from the exhaust melts the covering, revealing the mechanical plating beneath.
CLOTHES

Ed’s trademark is a bright red, long-sleeved, and hooded cloak with a tail that reaches his upper calves. The Flamel is embossed on the back. This symbolises his training under the master Alchemist Izumi Curtis. Edward likely made this cloak himself. He repairs it frequently and, in Chapter85, created one using a roll red cloth. To make it more comfortable for cold weather, Ed modified his cloak with a fur trim around the hood. Although Ed’s wardrobe changes over time, Ed seems to be particularly fond of black.
He almost always wears black trousers and a black shirt underneath his coat. Ed wears a sleeveless, black shirt, a jacket with silver/white lining, and a red trench-type jacket. This is Ed’s main outfit. The jacket goes through many changes throughout the manga as well as the 2003 anime. This jacket can be seen at the start of the manga and 2003 anime. It is longer and is worn under his belt. The jacket hangs above his belt and has a zip at the top when he leaves Resembool. The most common depiction of the jacket is that it is attached at the top with buttons and falls just short of his waist, allowing him to see his black shirt.

A wide brown leather belt is also worn by him, to which he keeps his pocket watch from the State Alchemist. This belt was changed to two thin belts that are worn parallel in the 2003 anime. Edward’s elevator shoes, which are black leather boots with thick red soles, are part of his attempt to appear taller. To hide the fact that his right arm was artificial, Edward often wears white gloves in public. His overall outfit likely conveys a red, white, and black motif. These colors, along with the gold color of his hair, are significant in traditional alchemy.
PERSONALITY

Edward is an immature personality. Edward is determinedly stubborn and strong-willed. He often lets his pettiness, vindictiveness and pettiness get the best of him. Fuhrer Bradley decided to codename him “Fullmetal” because ” Hagane“, which literally means “steel,” is a Japanese term that denotes an obstinate disposition. He is often reprimanded or restrained by Al, or any other present. He can be quite selfish and self-absorbed and acts more out of self-interest that any kind of philanthropy.
He also takes many opportunities to stoke his own ego and flaunt the military’s monetary power and governmental license. He is hostile to authority figures and has little incentive to comply with orders that he disagrees with, which gives him the title of being a loose cannon. Edward can also be quite quick-tempered and resorts to steel-fisted violence more often than calm negotiation to resolve disputes. He even suggested that not hitting Paninya due to her gender was a sexist notion, and therefore against his principles. Edward is known for his foul-mouthed nature and his ability to be sarcastic and bluntly relieve others from their illusions about God, reality or their self-importance.

Edward is also known for his impatience and inability to stay still for very long. This may be a contributing factor to his love of traveling. Ed’s deeper nature is one of unflinching loyalty and marked selflessness. Edward, who was so traumatized at a young age, cannot ignore the suffering of others. He is sensitive to pain and seeks out solutions. Although his solemn advice is sometimes tempered by harsh criticisms, it is because he truly wants to help them find the best path forward. He is a person who must struggle with a disabled body and urges people with strong legs to continue their adventure. As someone who is burdened by past mistakes, he emphasizes the importance of people taking responsibility for them.
Although he may intervene for the oppressed when he feels it is necessary, Ed prefers to assist only those who have the will to. His strong belief in the Equivalent exchange concept and his popularity as a “hero” earned him fame and popularity. Ed’s most defining characteristic throughout the series is his guilt complex. He believes that his brother and sister are in their current state because it was his idea of transmuting their mother. Partially because Al lost his whole body, and Ed lost only one arm and a leg as a result. He believed that Al hated him and would not talk to him about the events.

He is a standoffish individual who is determined to do everything himself and refuses any help from Al. He learns to rely more on his friends and to share his burdens with others over time. He may be able to work through his guilt but it doesn’t go away. Even towards the end, he still beat himself up about Nina Tucker becoming a Chimera, despite saving many lives along the adventure. “Shorty?! This could be done by a shorty! You can also call me a half-pint bean sprout midget. “I’m still growing backwater desert idiots!” The most striking characteristic of Edward’s dispositional traits is his Napoleonic denial about his shortness. Even when he is calm and collected, any mention of Edward’s stature causes him to lose control of his emotions and to lash out verbally as well as physically.
His height of 165 cm is the main reason for his outbursts. Distinctive to these outbursts is Ed’s tendency to take even the most casual mention of his height as a gross insult and interpret it exaggeratedly, mistaking words as simple as “small” for phrases as contrived as “so-tiny-that-he-need-not-fear-being-crushed-by-a-boot-because-he-fits-so-easily-between-the-grooves-of-the-sole” and the like. If he is not in the right, those who say the word “small”, in his presence, will be subject to his vindictive tantrums.

Nina refers to him as “Little brother” in the 2003 Anime. He has probably reached a normal height by now, so this part of his personality may have disappeared by the end. Edward claims he doesn’t believe in gods but his spiritual sensibilities are more deistic than atheistic. Although he doesn’t pray, he frequently mentions the existence of a god in his speech. He often blames him for his difficulties. Ed has a very unusual aesthetic sensibility. He is a huge fan of macabre or gothic fixtures.
He will often transform decorations with demonic imagery or excessively gaudy details into something useful, much to the dismay and delight of those who receive a gift or service. Ed has made it clear that his red coat is part and parcel of this lack of taste. He says it is “a badass colour [that] gets people moving.”
RELATIONSHIPS
ALPHONSE ELRIC

Edward’s closeness to his younger brother is undoubtedly the most important and strong of his personal relationships. Al is protective of Ed, but Ed seems to be almost a parent to him. Although the Elric brothers are very different people and have arguments about how to do things, they seem close enough that each would willingly and willingly sacrifice his life for the other. Edward gave his right arm to Alphonse as a Soul Binding Transmutation.
This was in exchange for their mother’s attempted resurrection. Edward was able to summon his brother’s soul from the void, attach it alchemically to an armor suit, but he still felt guilty for having initiated the accident that led to his death. Edward also believed that his brother had blamed him. Edward seems to be concentrating on Al’s recovery as quickly as possible, despite his own difficulties with his automail limbs.
WINRY ROCKBELL

Their feelings will also grow throughout the story. Winry Rockbell’s relationship to Ed is one of his most complex personal relationships. Winry was born to the Elrics’ kind family and grew up with them. Ed and Al are not only childhood friends but also a family. Edward is more at odds with Winry than he is with Al because of their similar stubborn personalities. Ed lost his arm and leg in a terrible accident. Winry became Ed’s personal automail mechanic. Winry built Ed new limbs from the tender age 11.
Winry has been Ed’s constant support both emotionally and mechanically since then. However, they still argue quite often. This affectionate hostility may be hiding a deeper relationship. Although Edward doesn’t openly admit to romantic feelings towards Winry, he is quite protective of her and gets unnaturally flustered when it comes to the suggestion of an amatory relationship. Winry has, for her part admitted that she was in love with Edward many years ago. The series ended with Ed revealing his feelings to Winry and finally marrying him. According to the Fullmetal Alchemist Chronicle, they were married in 1917 and had two children.
ROY MUSTANG

Although Colonel Roy Mustang is Edward’s superior officer, their relationship is not typical. They share a kind of amicable animosity. Roy enjoys teasing Fullmetal, and Ed takes great pleasure in showing Mustang up when he can. Although their encounters are fraught with an awful lot of mutual dislike, Flame is a good friend and co-conspirator in the secret war against the Homunculi. Roy first met the boy to help him with the State Alchemist program. He formed a close bond with him. Edward subtly supports Mustang’s secret bid for the Fuhrer title and to improve the country.
VAN HOHENHEIM

Both the manga and the 2003 anime versions of this storyline show Edward’s conflicted relationship with his father. Edward was always hostile towards Hohenheim as a child. He believed he was a father who had abandoned him, Alphonse, and Trisha. Edward blames the sudden death of his mother and refuses to cooperate with him. Edward eventually comes to terms with his father’s presence, and begins to trust his abilities in dealing with the Homunculi. Edward addresses him only by his name, unlike Al who calls him “Dad”.
TRISHA ELRIC

Edward had been blessed with the greatest comfort by his mother, Trisha, even before her tragic death in 1904 from contagious disease. Young Edward tried to fill Trisha’s empty space after her sudden and apparent permanent death. It was actually the fact that Edward was so impressed by his mother’s alchemical abilities that he became so interested in alchemy at such an early age. Trisha’s passing was, in no uncertain terms – the turning point that triggered all the sadness that would follow. He still holds Trisha dearly in his hearts, and he is still grieving for the loss she has caused.
IZUMI CURTIS

Edward, a former student and mentor in alchemy, has a deep respect for Izumi’s vast knowledge and his childhood memories of her hard physical and spiritual training. This is why she is the first person the young State Alchemist is openly and unapologetically afraid of. However, Edward and Alphonse have a deep respect for Izumi’s ability to raise them to become skilled alchemists and wise young men. They now see her as a surrogate mother and her gentler moments as they look at her as her surrogate sons. Although their relationship is strained by the shame of the boys for disobeying her teachings, Edward and Izumi can come to an agreement, not only as master and surrogate mother and boy, but also as friends.
ALEX LOUIS ARMSTRONG

Alex was moved by their story and impressed by their courage and determination. He often cares about their safety and well-being. While Edward often expresses disapproval at the major for his overbearing and coddling nature, Al enjoys the chance to be treated as a young boy by Armstrong. The Strong-Arm Alchemist has been a trusted friend to the Elrics and the major looks forward to their potential fulfillment as well as the return of their bodies.
SCAR

Scar initially hunted Ed down because Ed was a State Alchemist. Ed also hated him for his actions towards Nina. When Scar learned that Winry’s parents were also murdered, this hatred grew. Scar was not afraid to lure him out, and he tried to kill the Elric brothers. The Homunculi intervened because Ed and Al were still alive. Scar was also told by Ed that Father and the Homunculi were responsible for the Ishval War. Scar worked often with Ed to stop Father in the second half of the series. While Ed clearly still held strong animosity towards Scar, Scar accepted his help.
GREED

Al was initially hostile to Greed, and he kidnapped him to teach him how to attach a soul to an armor suit. Edward fought Greed until Wrath took him captive. After they met, Greed became Ed’s enemy and obeyed Father’s orders. Ling tried to talk with Ed (as Greed overtook his body), but failed. Edward asked Greed to join him when they met again.
Greed suggested that Ed, Darius and Heinkel should be his subordinates. Ed agreed to this suggestion. Ling and Ed were able to become close friends despite their differences. They also worried about each other during the battle against Father and other homunculi. Greed was grateful to have given his life for his friends, and thanks them. Edward was visibly shocked when Greed gave his life to save Father. He then landed the last blow against Father in retribution.
LING YAO

Ed and Al initially fed Ling by giving him food, but he was soon starved. Ling asked them to discuss alchemy and alkahestry, but they refused to tell him the details about the philosopher’s stones. This led to Ling sending Lan fan and Fu to attack them. He remained loyal to them and sought information on immortality. Although Ed initially disliked him, they quickly became close friends.
They worked together on many projects such as the lure of the homunculus (by scaring Scar) and fighting against Gluttony (inside Gluttony’s stomach). Ed began to worry and called Ling frequently when Greed took control. Ling and Greed eventually began to communicate more and became friends.
PINAKO ROCKBELL

Pinako, Winry’s grandmother, was the one who looked after them when their mother died. Al and Ed refer to her as Granny, but only when Ed isn’t arguing with her), the same as Winry. Although Ed is known to banter and argue with Pinako quite a bit, she still cares about him and Al as if they were her grandchildren.
ABILITIES

Edward is small in stature and young, but he is an exceptional combatant. Ed learned from Izumi Curtis how to condition his body by sparring and regular training. This is part of her philosophy that “to train your spirit, first train your body.” His small frame is disguised by a muscular build. This, along with his natural high energy and endurance, fuels his remarkable strength and agility, which allows him throw people far larger than he is. Edward is a skilled hand-to-hand fighter who can hold his own against both armed opponents as well as martial arts experts.
This is thanks to Izumi’s Spartan training. His steel right arm, and left leg increase his fighting strength, as well as his offensive and defensive capabilities. He is then refitted with a lighter, cooler-climate automail in Chapter70. Edward uses alchemy to transform his Automail Arm into a Sword. A portion of Edward’s Automail Arm was transformed into a sword. Edward Elric, a genius-level alchemist and prodigy in alchemistry, was astonished to be accepted into the State Alchemist Program at an age so young. He was a natural talent for alchemy from an early age. His father abandoned his study and he learned alchemy skills himself.

This shocked his mother. Edward has incorporated alchemy in his development stages. He is able to see the world through alchemy and solve complex codes, puzzles and mysteries more quickly than usual. Edward has shown that he is a skilled chemist and a competent biologist. Indeed, even his failed attempts to resurrect his mother’s body were a sign of this. Edward’s amazing, almost-encyclopedic knowledge in alchemical theory has contributed to his remarkable success with emergency soul binding experimentation.
Edward has an extraordinary ability to focus and shut out all distractions, allowing him to devote his entire mental energy to solving any problem that arises, particularly in the case books. Edward transforms himself into a humanoid Philosopher’s Stone Edward’s alchemy skills were so impressive that he could transform himself into a humanoid philosopher’s stone to force Pride into his hands. He then reverted to normal right away. He was able to destroy Pride’s Philosopher’s Stone inside and revert Pride back to his original form.
COMBAT ALCHEMY

After passing through The Gate, Edward witnessed the Truth and became an alchemist who doesn’t need a drawn Transmutation Circle in order to perform alchemical transformations. He can simply touch his palms together to create energy circulation and transmute by using his will instead of the required runes. His transmutations are quick and extremely versatile thanks to this remarkable talent. He can also use alchemy to its maximum potential in direct combat.
Edward, in the 2003 anime was unaware of his new talent. He continued to draw transmutation circle when performing alchemy but after accidentally using this ability to heat water for comfort to the pregnant Gracia Hicks, he started to use it more often. His ability to transmute was so good that he could turn his automail arm into an effective gatling gun for battle in the 2003 anime. Edward masters his environment and uses it to his advantage in battle. He creates giant earthen hands to lift things, columns of stones to gain higher ground, and ogre-faced batteringrams to attack his opponents.

Ed is also skilled in the transmutation of weapons for battle. He often creates menacing-looking swords or ostentatious lances, but his primary weapon remains his automail right hand, whose forearm plating, which he transforms into different blades. Edward Elric’s true genius lies in his ability to incorporate the alchemy styles from others into his own. This makes him adaptable to different situations.
He has so far adapted Scar’s use of the deconstruction phase of alchemy, Alex Louis Armstrong’s gauntlets, and stone spikes, as well as Greed’s carbon armor hardening to his combat repertoire. Edward loses the ability to perform alchemy following the use of his Gate Of Truth to bring Alphonse home. However, he retains all of his alchemy knowledge, which is full of the truth.
ADVENTURES IN THE EAST
Edward discredits the false priest. Three years later, Alphonse and Edward visit Reole to follow a lead that leads them to the Philosopher’s Stone. With the aid of a young Letoist girl, Rose they infiltrate the new Church of Leto to find the mysterious priest Cornello. He claims that he uses divine powers to perform miracles. Edward suspects Cornello of possessing the Philosopher’s stone and exposes Cornello as a fraud to reveal his plans to fool Reole citizens for his militaristic purposes.
The stone Cornello holds shatter and falls apart as Edward defeats the fake clergyman. Ed and Al concluded that the stone Cornello held was also fake and set out on their next assignment. However, Rose, now distraught and spiritually perplexed, was informed by Ed and Al that she can move forward without her faith as long as she has her two strong legs, and the truth. The brothers then move on to the coal-mining community of Youswell.

There they discover that the corrupt Lieutenant Yoki has been harassing and taxing the villagers unfairly. Edward uses clever tricks to steal Yoki’s town and mines and then transfers it to the grateful citizens. The boys stop a train hijacking and arrive in East City. There, Colonel Mustang introduces Edward the state-certified biochemist Shu Tucker. He hopes to share his knowledge on Chimeric Alchemy with them to help them find a better way to restore their bodies.
Edward learns that Tucker’s famed past success in creating a human-talking chimera was due to a human experiment in the which he gave up his ex-wife. He also discovered that Tucker’s new triumph was won at the expense of his daughter Nina. The boys were very close to each other. Alphonse and Edward are grieving the loss of Nina. However, they discover that Nina was murdered by a mysterious assailant known as ” scar”, a State Alchemist-targeting serial killer who is then after Edward. The boys are baffled by Scar’s ability to chemically destroy any object he touches using his right hand.

Alphonse’s armor is also reduced to scrap. Fullmetal’s forces arrive to Fullmetal’s rescue before Scar can execute his lethal brand if justice. With the assistance of Major Alex Louis Armstrong the Strong-Arm Alchemist it is discovered that Scar’s grudge stems from his Ishvalan survivor in the Ishval Civil War. Scar flees, and the boys plan to have Ed’s arm rebuilt at Resembool so that Al can be repaired without damaging the blood rune. Major Armstrong is their escort, as Edward is more vulnerable to being attacked without his arm, so the boys set out for the countryside.
However, Edward disembarks from Shou Tucker’s ship to possibly find bio-alchemy information. They discover that Marcoh had fled the Ishval front line and has been living as a small-time doctor, treating patients with alchemy over the years. The most surprising thing is what Edward learns about Marcoh from Marcoh: that the research he was doing during the war, which led to him leaving the military, was the creation of the Philosopher’s Stone. Marcoh reluctantly showed Edward the stone he stole when he was leaving the war. He explained that it was a flawed version of the legendary stone, and that while it was powerful, it was not as strong as the original.
Edward is filled with hope and asks Marcoh to show him his research notes on Philosopher’s stone. However, even after hearing Ed’s tragic story, Fullmetal advises that Edward not want it because it is a difficult pursuit. Edward’s determination eventually convinces Marcoh to give Fullmetal a note that describes the location of his hidden research notebooks and contains a cryptic message. He hopes Edward’s talent will help him find “the truth behind it all”.
Edward arrives at Resembool, where the Rockbells tend his automail. Pinako adjusts his left leg to compensate for any growth and Winry works nonstop for three nights and three days to build him a better right arm. After repairing Al’s armor, Edward takes no time and relaxes in Resembool. The alchemists then set out for the location indicated in Marcoh’s communique. This is the first branch at the National Central Library located in Central City.
LABORATORY #5 IN CENTRAL CITY
The Major resigns as his bodyguard for the boys upon arrival in Central. However, he appoints two subordinates, Sergeant Denny Brosh and 2nd Lieutenant Maria Ross, to continue as Fullmetal’s guides since Scar is still at large. Alphonse and Edward, with their new guards, head to the National Central Library in search of Marcoh’s hidden journal. However, they are shocked to discover that the library’s original branch and all its texts had been destroyed in a suspicious fire only one day prior to their arrival.
Edward asks the main library office if there is any evidence that Marcoh’s journals were in the original branch building. The answer is not conclusive. However, he is referred to Sheska who was previously employed in the first branch, and has an amazing knowledge of all texts contained therein. Sheska can recreate the entire journal word-for-word thanks to her photographic memory, even though she confirmed that Dr. Marcoh had left his notes in the first branch. Alphonse and Edward discover that Marcoh had coded sensitive research notes under the disguise of a cookbook and begin to decipher the code.

After spending ten days poring over Marcoh’s text and a number of alchemical reference materials found in the Central Library’s Central Library, the boys decrypted the journals and discovered the horrifying truth that the famous Philosopher’s Stone was created from living human beings. Al and Ed are in deep despair after reaching such a tragic dead end in their pursuit. They begin to wonder if their restoration is possible. Edward contemplates asking Alphonse if he is to blame for the tragedy. However, Armstrong, Ross, and Brosh interrupt the brothers, who are all informed of the horrible developments.
Their attempts to comfort the Elrics bring back the memory of Marcoh’s cryptic comment that there was a truth behind it. Edward continues his investigation with renewed energy. Edward begins to investigate the question of alchemical laboratories within city limits. He discovers that the Fifth Laboratory, which is supposedly unutilized, is right next to the city prison. Using the Philosopher’s Stone’s makeup to his advantage, Edward speculates that death row prisoners may have been secretly smuggled into Lab 5 in order to participate in the creation of the stone.
Armstrong informs Edward about the death of , the Lab 5 officer, which cuts off their investigation options. The brothers then plan to sneak away and inspect the facility at night without notifying their guards. Edward fights 48. They arrive at the lab and discover many points that indicate that the “decommissioned building” is still being used. Edward decides to go inside and take a closer look. Al, however, remains outside due to the size of his brother. He discovers a room with a mysterious Transmutation Circle built with multiple layers and alternating pentagons.

This is where he concludes that the five-point array was created specifically to create Philosopher’s Stones. He is stopped from investigating further by an armored man calling himself Number48. This figure claims to be responsible for destroying Laboratory 5 and all those who attempt to access its secrets. Edward discovers that 48 looks exactly like Alphonse. The guard then explains to him that he was a serial killer named “Slicer” before Lab 5 scientists took him off death row to conduct experiments on his soul and body. Edward is soon in trouble after it becomes clear that “Slicer”, the serial killer, was actually a pair of murderous siblings.
They both live in the armor body which gives him unexpected versatility. Edward, who is badly injured and forced into a corner, narrowly avoids his death by using Scar’s destruction alchemy style to immobilize Number 48. Before Edward can question his defeated enemy, however, a new pair of mystery men appears and defeats the Slicer brothers. The newcomers, , a woman, and a teenager, both marked with the symbol Ouroboros refer to Edward as a valuable Human Sacrifice. Edward is threatened by their dangerous abilities, and angry at their insults.

However, Edward attempts an attack but is left with a significant disadvantage when his automail arm stops working altogether. The teenager, Envy kicks Edward in his stomach and knocks him unconscious. He then carries him outside, where Ross and Brosh are waiting to assist before the Laboratory explodes. Ed is able to regain consciousness the next morning and finds himself in a public hospital run by 2nd Lieutenant Ross. Ross tells him to be more thorough in his investigation, and he reprimands him for not trusting his friends.
After clearing his head, Edward summons Winry into Central to repair his arm. He then discusses the Lab 5 incident, with Major Armstrong, his close friend and ally Lieutenant Colonel Hughes, and the Fuhrer. The Fuhrer warns them that the path to the Philosopher’s Stone could prove too dangerous. Alphonse and Edward reach the end of their Central City investigative license.

They plan to visit their teacher in southern California to strengthen their minds and bodies, as well as to consult Izumi about the Philosopher’s stone, Human Transmutation, and the possibility to restore their bodies. Winry tags along, wanting to visit the famed automail community of Rush Valley while on his way to Dublith.
JOURNEY TO THE SOUTH

Winry requests that the Elrics stop in Rush Valley for some sightseeing. There, Winry meets the pickpocket Paninya. His armed automail legs force Winry to search out their creator Dominic Lecoulte. Ed and Al accompany Winry on the adventure. After Dominic’s daughter in-law gave birth to a baby in a tornado, the Elrics made a stop in Rush Valley to do some sightseeing. Winry decided to stay in Rush Valley to train in an automail atelier, while Ed and Al continued on to Dublith.
The Elrics meet their Izumi and her husband Sig upon arriving in Dublith. The boys reminisce about their travels and exchange stories. Izumi says she doesn’t know much about the Philosopher’s Stone, but she tells Ed and Al she has met an alchemist named Van Hohenheim who seemed to have a lot of knowledge about it. Edward, still bitter toward his father, refuses to consult him. Izumi, after observing the boys for the day, correctly sees that her pupils have been altered by an encounter with the Gateway due Human Transmutation. She demands that they fully explain their actions.

After sharing everything that happened since they left Izumi she comforts them and praises their alchemical skills in being able survive the ordeal despite her disappointment at their failure to heed her repeated warnings about Human Transmutation. She also reveals that she had made the same mistake in her youth, and several of her internal organs were “taken” away by the Truth due to her frequent Hematemesis. She demands that the Elric brothers be expelled from her home, following her own principles.
Ed reluctantly agrees to this, but as Sig leads the pair to the train station, explaining that Izumi’s Human Transmutation was a failed attempt to revive her stillborn baby fifteen years ago, Edward informs him that Edward and his brother can address Izumi as colleagues now that they have been expelled. They are free to return to Curtis home at any time they like. Edward realizes that he didn’t understand this sooner and rushes to Izumi’s home, asking her to help him restore his bodies.

Izumi refuses to comply and suggests that Alphonse, whose entire body was taken into the Gate, might have learned more from it than Edward or her, and that his memories may have been suppressed as a result of post-traumatic stress disorder. His memories could be the key to unlocking the next stage of the Elrics’ adventure. Edward remembers suddenly that his State Alchemist annual assessment is past due and rushes to South City in an effort to have his license reinstated. He is accompanied by Major Armstrong and Fuhrer Bradley on his return from Dublith.
Edward discovers that Alphonse is being kidnapped and taken to Izumi’s house by a mysterious man called Greed, a man who has an Ouroboros Tattoo. Izumi informs Edward that the “Greed”, who is interested in Edward’s Soul Binding transmutation, claims convincingly to be a Homunculus. Edward then sets out alone for the secret base of Greed’s Dublith gang, a bar called Devil’s Nest. Edward refuses to accept Greed’s offer to exchange equivalent information. He promised to explain how to create an artificial human body and provide information about Soul Binding.

After easily dispatching one Greed’s henchmen and aiming his fist at Edward, the Homunculus is killed. The rest of Greed’s gang run away with Alphonse. Edward in his confrontation with Greed. Ed is confronted with Greed’s extraordinary abilities to instantly regenerate from any physical injury and cover his entire body with an indestructible armor made of diamonds as a barrier to his willpower. Edward discovers that Greed is a Homunculus and has a body similar to a human. He then uses Major Armstrong’s combat alchemy style to remove the carbon armor and soften it while inflicting severe damage to Greed’s internal systems.
Greed is happy to have found someone who can defeat his “Ultimate Shield” and flees just as Fuhrer Bradley, who had followed Edward to Devil’s Nest along with a group of soldiers from Southern HQ’s after hearing Izumi’s description about Greed), storms the bar with his men. After reuniting again with Alphonse Edward is taken into custody by Southern soldiers. The Fuhrer then briefly questions Edward about the implications of the incident for national security.

King Bradley is satisfied with the Fullmetal Alchemist’s honesty and allows the brothers to go. However, the brothers talk in private at the Curtis home about the battle at Devil’s Nest. Alphonse tells Edward that the ordeal and its many shocks have brought back his memories of being inside Gate. However, the information he gained did not contain any new information on Human Transmutation.
Edward is more concerned about the Fuhrer’s decision to have all Greed’s gang members killed on the spot at Devil’s Nest, instead of allowing a few to be interrogated regarding Greed’s apparent connection to the Ouroboros-marked pair responsible for the production of Philosopher’s Stones. Despite having expressed an interest in the matter, Edward is not interested in the Fuhrer’s actions. Edward is suspicious of Bradley’s motives and resolves to watch Bradley’s every move.
STRANGER FROM XING, AND THE RETURN TO CENTRAL

Edward leaves Dublith to visit Winry, Rush Valley after his automail arm has suffered severe damage during the fight against Greed. As she prepares the parts and materials, the Elrics walk around the town and meet a young man who is hungry. The young man, Ling Yao is introduced to them as a traveler from the eastern country of Xing. Ling explains to them that he crossed the Great Eastern Desert to see the ruins Xerxes – where alchemy was born – and that he plans to study Amestrian alchemy, and the differences to alkahestry which is a native Xingese variety used primarily for medicinal purposes.
Edward and Al are excited to hear about this foreign practice and ask Ling to show it to them. Ling tells them that he isn’t an alkahestry practitioner, and that the only thing that interests him in alchemy is a legend that he once heard: the legend of the philosopher’s stone and its ability to grant immortality. Elric Brothers meet a mysterious foreigner. Ed pretends ignorance and tries to leave but Ling quickly sees through him. He summons his two armed guards to arrest the Elrics. Edward resists and Ling’s two bodyguards use Xingese martial art to attack Edward.

The fight spreads throughout town, with Alphonse fighting the sword-wielding Fu while Edward battles the Lan fan , a kunai knife-wielding Lanfan . Edward has some difficulties dealing with the speed of his opponent, but soon learns that Lan fan is quite rash and predictable when Ed makes ill of Ling. This information allows Ed to win the battle against her. However, Lan Fan disarms Ed’s automail arm and throws a grenade at it, forcing Fullmetal to think on his feet.
He hides in the smoke and dust and sets up a trap to catch her. Alphonse, who claims to have transmuted without the Transmutation Circle has arrived on the scene and is captured by Fu. Ling follows him and cleverly frees his fellow comrades before fleeing. Ling is re-introduced to the Elrics by Winry’s business, who, once Edward has been repaired, agree to allow Edward and his companions to tag along on their return adventure to Central City.

Ling wanders off when they arrive at their destination and the party loses him. Al and Ed ignore his absence and head to headquarters with Winry to meet Hughes and inquire if he has uncovered any new information regarding the investigation into the Ouroboros-bearers they suspect to be Homunculi, like Greed. They are stunned to meet Lt. Hawkeye, Colonel Mustang, at headquarters. They state that they were both recently transferred to the capital. However, Ed questions Roy about Hughes’ health and he informs Ed that Maes has left the military to go to the country with his family.
The Elrics are disappointed and find lodging in a military-run hotel. They then attempt to continue their investigation on their own but discover terrible news in the evening newspaper: 2nd Lieutenant Ross has been convicted for Hughes’ murder. This had apparently occurred a month before. Ross is apparently running from jail in the strange company of Ling and Barry, the Chopper. This was the guard who holds the soul-bound armor that Alphonse had fought during their mission at Laboratory 5. Barry keeps Ross busy while Ross escapes on her ostracism.

However, Ed slips past and rushes to check what has happened. He is shocked to see Colonel Mustang standing over Ross’s body, which was charred beyond recognition by the Flame Alchemist’s alchemy. Edward confronts him furiously, but he does not receive any explanations for Mustang’s actions except an apology for not informing Hughes of his death. Major Armstrong is also accompanied by the Elrics to the hospital. Knox tells us that the corpse he just autopsied was so badly burned that only the dental records can be used to confirm its identity.
He reproaches Mustang but, to Edward’s fury the Flame Alchemist does not offer any further signs of remorse. Instead, he recommends that Armstrong, who is clearly distraught about his subordinate’s brutal death, take some time off in East Asia, where Roy claims the women there are especially beautiful. Ed, angered by the inhumanity of his superior, returns to their hotel with Al but finds that Winry has vanished. They suspect Winry went into town to report Hughes’ death and call Gracia to confirm their suspicions. Edward arrives at the Hughes house and explains the circumstances surrounding Maes’ death.

Gracia is deeply sorry for her husband’s involvement in such a dangerous situation. Although he was prepared to take Gracia’s criticism and blame, Ed is not surprised when Alphonse also joins the apology. He stated that if it costs others their lives, he doesn’t want his human body back. They are both shocked when Gracia encourages them to keep going in pursuit of their goal. She tells them that her husband would love them to continue, and that if they fail to do so it would render Maes’s death meaningless.
These words are a great encouragement to Ed, but he can’t help but notice Gracia crying in the window as the children leave. Edward spends the rest of his day moping in the hotel. But when he checks on Winry, who is also moping, she tells him that she baked an apple pie at Mrs. Hughes’ house. Gracia had shown her how to make it during her last visit. She insists Edward have one, while regretfully stating that Maes would love to try it.
THE RUINS OF XERXES

While Winry and the Elrics continue to mope about their hotel, Major Armstrong suddenly visits them. He says nothing but lashes out at Edward, causing him to lose his automail arm. Armstrong ignores Ed and Al’s protests and declares that Fullmetal will be taken to Resembool to repair the damage while Alphonse, who is too conspicuous, will remain in the capital. Soon afterward, the two State Alchemists arrive at Resembool where Ed is shocked to find 2nd Lieutenant Breda waiting. Ed finally gets his first big clue. Breda introduces Ed to Alex to Mr. Hans. He will be sneaking them over the border into Xerxes.
Edward starts to understand what’s going on. Under the radar of the government, Ed, Han and Armstrong travel by horse over the deserted sands to reach Fu’s capital. Fu is waiting for them to meet him. The party is moving through the ruins which have become a refuge for travelers and refugees alike. Edward notices a large mural that looks very familiar. But Fu calls him before he can inspect it further and informs him that they are close to the rendezvous point where the last member of their group is waiting. Edward, who is jovially cursing Colonel, recalls Roy’s comment about east women being beautiful.

He then looks at the mysterious last party member, a very alive 2nd Lieutenant Maria Ross. Breda explains how, after being suspicious of Ross’s flashy arrest and sudden conviction for Hughes’ murder, Mustang orchestrated her violent escape, faked her death, and covert extradition to a country where she would not be recognized. Breda states that Edward and Major Armstrong were taken out of the country by Colonel Mustang to sync all the data they had collected about their mysterious enemy, while keeping prying eyes away. While Ed and Armstrong discuss all of the information Hughes and Hughes had on Laboratory 5 and Homunculi, Breda fills in all the Mustang data from Barry and his own investigations.
Edward reviews all of the information and makes a decision. He tells the other that he can’t give up on the promise that he and Alphonse made and that he only has so much power, but he will do everything he can to make sure that no one else is left behind in their personal redemption. Ross and Fu leave to continue their long adventure across desert to Xing. Breda, Armstrong, and others prepare to sneak into Amestris via Resembool.
Edward requests them to be patient while he examines the mysterious mural. The array includes several archaic alchemical runes, such as “the hermaphroditic two-headed dragon”, as well as what appear to be alternating pentagons that have five suns or five moons at their vertex. Although he recognizes its shape as Laboratory 5, the large gaps between the circles prevent him from understanding the purpose of the circle. Edward is attacked from the behind before he can take a closer look. He quickly subdues his attacker and realizes that he is Ishvalan.

They want him to become their hostage in order to use it as a bargaining tool in their negotiations for Ishval’s return. However, they are interrupted by Mistress Shan who arrives on the scene and admonishes the camp for their shameful behavior. Edward questions Shan about why Shan would defend an Amestrian, when she has so many reasons to hate them. She reveals that she doesn’t hate Amestris but she also remembers two Amestrian doctors who saved her life during the Ishval Civil War.
Edward learns Shan was referring to Sara, Winry’s parents. He is grateful for their bravery, but asks solemnly whether Shan knows the cause of death. Edward is saddened to learn that the Rockbells were killed by an Ishvalan warrior monk who they had saved. He was a man covered in bandages and sporting a long, elaborate tattoo across his right arm.

9 TIMES EDWARD ELRIC STOLE THE SHOW
Fullmetal Alchemist is packed with memorable moments from nearly every character on its large roster. It is admirable how the series fleshes out minor characters to ensure they have a chance at the spotlight. It is also why the original and faithful Brotherhoodversions are so deeply ingrained in the hearts of fans. The Fullmetal Alchemist, Edward Elric, is the protagonist of the series. Expectedly, this character will steal the spotlight the most. 9 HE COPIES SCAR’S DECONSTRUCTION ALCHEMY TO HARNESS IT AGAINST SLICER

Edward is shown early in the series how destructive Scar’s personal brand of alchemy can be. They would have died if it wasn’t for their brother’s armored body, and his prosthetic limbs. Edward shows his genius in a fight against the Slicer brothers , where he is able to recreate Scar’s deconstruction alchemy and harness its power against his younger brother. Due to his experiences with Truth and the alchemic circle, it is believed that he is the only alchemist who can do this.
8 HE EXPOSES THE SAFETY FLAWS IN THE STATE ALCHEMY LICENSING EXAMINATION

As if this weren’t enough, he shows the courage and confidence to point that spear at Fuhrer King Bradley. He is immediately surrounded by soldiers who draw their weapons. However, it doesn’t bother Edward one bit and Bradley orders them all to stop. Edward discovers that Bradley had drawn his sword and destroyed Edward’s weapon without him being seen. Edward is now outclassed.
7 HE FINDS OUT HOW TO GET ENVY, ENVY, AND LING OUT OF GLUTTONY’S STOMACH

Edward, Ling and Envy are all trapped in Gluttony’s stomach during a fight against Envy or Gluttony. There is no way out. Even Envy, the one who knows most about Gluttony’s workings, admits there is no escape and that they are in an extremely hopeless position. Edward uses old runes found in Gluttony’s stomach from Ruins of Xerxes to create a strategy for transporting the three of them through Gluttony’s experimental portal of Truth into reality. This is a risky plan that Edward executes with great success.
6 HE EXPOSES FATHER CORNELLO AS A FAKE TO ALL HIS BRAINWASHED BELIEVERS

Father Cornello is the first “villain” the Elric Brothers see the Elric Brothers taking on. He’s a religious figure who uses the power of a fake Philosopher’s Stone to power “miracles”. He might have been able defend his actions if he was only using it for his own good. He’s been seen lying to his followers and exploiting them so they will obey him unconditionally. With the help of Alphonse his brother Edward, Edward can expose Edward and his lies to all the townfolk. While this causes more pain and leads to a violent fall-out, the brothers eventually recover and view themselves as heroes for their actions.
5 HIS DORKY CONFESSION TO WINRY IS UNFORGETTABLY ADORABLE

It is difficult to imagine Edward’s show-stealing moments without thinking of his dorky, flustered confession about Winry. He leaves Winry out of most important matters throughout the series and only contacts her when he has an emergency with his automail. He doesn’t really care about her. He is so concerned about what might happen to her, he keeps her away. This makes the confession scene in which he compares his feelings to the idea of an equivalent exchange even more memorable.
4 HE CONVINCES WINRY NOT TO ENTER THE CYCLE OF REVENGE BY KILLING SCAR

Winry snaps at Scar when she learns that Scar killed her parents in Ishval. It reaches the point when she considers taking Scar’s life. Scar comments that she would be justified in taking his revenge, giving her the chance to land a clean shot. This would have been devastating for Winry’s character. Winry is a sweet little girl whose goal is to heal others. Edward says this to her in an attempt to calm her down. He then gives Scar his jacket and chases after Scar. It was a truly memorable moment in his character’s history.
3 HE REVEALS ENVY’S FEELINGS TOWARDS HUMANS IN THEIR FINAL MOMENTS

After Hughes’ murder, Roy Mustang finds himself on a very dark road. To vengeance his murderer, he’ll take on any risk including his morals. Edward and Riza are able to stop Mustang, and take Envy’s tiny, real form. He is filled with pity for the homunculus, but then he reveals that their behavior of being “higher than humans” was actually due to their jealousy over humans and their bonds.
2 HE GIVES UP HIS ALCHEMIC POWERS TO SAVE HIS & HIS BROTHERS’ BODIES

Edward believes that alchemy can solve all his problems. This is understandable given his field’s ability, but his last character arc revolves around the realization that this outlook is flawed. He should be more concerned with the relationships he has with his family and friends than any other thing. Edward comes to this realization and decides to sacrifice his gate of Truth. He saves his brother’s lives and brings back their entire bodies through this sacrifice.
1 HE TEACHES HIMSELF ALCHEMY THROUGH HIS FATHER’S RESEARCH NOTES

Their father left Edward and Alphonse when they were young boys to find a way to age again. The boys did not know why, and just believed their father had abandoned them. This clearly hurt Edward, but it also sourred his impression of their father. He was still able use his father’s research notes for alchemy. His mother would tell him that he was like his father in alchemy. He lit up when she said it. He would have been able to learn so much by himself, even though it would have been remarkable enough to have had a teacher.
10 BEST THINGS ABOUT EDWARD ELRIC
Fullmetal Alchemist was successful even before its reboot. The original Fullmetal Alchemist anime was also a success. Edward Elric, one of the main protagonists, is also a popular character in anime. While he has his flaws and has some negative aspects to his character, he has many positive qualities.
10 HE IS AN EXTREMELY INTELLIGENT YOUNG MAN

Edward Elric is a multi-faceted individual. He can be extremely intelligent and yet be impatient or ignorant at the same time. His intelligence can’t be denied, especially when you consider his alchemy skills and how he applies them in specific situations. Although his impulsive and bratty personality can lead to him making unwise decisions, when takes the time to evaluate a situation and composes himself, there are few better . He is able to think on his feet, which is especially useful when he is involved in a fight.
9 HE IS VERY FOND OF AND OVER PROTECTIVE OF WINRY

Although Winry’s relationship to Ed is initially described as being a childhood friend of Alphonse and his, evidence quickly suggests that there’s more. They take a while to address their feelings properly, with Ed becoming embarrassed or flustered all the time. Ed is a protective person and Winry is grateful for her work as his automail mechanic. Although they argue more than Ed or Al, this is simply because of their two stubborn personalities. In the end, the duo is made for each other.
8 HIS PASSION AND FIRE DRIVE HIM TO GET RESULTS

Ed’s tendency to get worked up can be misinterpreted as being impulsive and hot-headed. However, this can also be understood as passion and fire. While it may not work in all situations, sometimes a more proactive approach is the best. Ed is driven by his determination to fix things and get his brother back. He sees patience as a luxury that he doesn’t have and he wants his brother back. He knows that he cannot do this by sitting still and not running around trying to find answers.
7 EDWARD IS DELIBERATELY MERCIFUL

Ed is a product of his traumatizing past and life experiences. He lives by the code of not taking other people’s lives. Although it is a noble and honorable way of living, it becomes increasingly difficult to keep up with the many horrors and dangers they face. Ed’s refusal of killing can be seen as both a negative and a positive. It is a sign of strength to hold on to your guns, even when you can kill your opponents whenever you want. His merciful nature almost cost him his life, as are his exchanges with Scar and Kimblee. But he is still able to keep his integrity and his pure intentions.
6 HE SHOWS COMPASSION AND SYMPATHY WHEN HE CAN RELATE

Ed may not always be there to help every person in need, but he does feel a lot of compassion and empathy for those who have merited his attention. Ed has experienced firsthand the pain of suffering, and the remnants from his past suffering still haunt him daily. Ed is able to sense the pain and suffering of others. His erratic and impulsive behaviors can make it easy to overlook his compassionate side, but it is there.
5 HE WAS TWELVE YEARS OLD WHEN HE BECAME THE YOUNGEST STATE ALCHEMIST.

Edward Elric lost his mother to a tragic illness. The void left by the loss led to darker times. His alchemical abilities impressed his mother, so he tried to resurrect him using this faith. His failed attempt at human transmutation resulted in him losing an arm and leg and his brother Alphonse with no human body. Ed became the youngest state alchemist to be certified at the age of twelve. It is a remarkable achievement and a testimony to his alchemy prowess, despite the trauma that it was associated with.
4 HE CAN BE TRUSTED TO NOT ABUSE HIS POWER
Ed is so skilled in alchemy that he doesn’t even have to use transmutation rings, which is a rare feat among alchemists. This shortcut could prove fatal if it isn’t used properly, but Ed and Al don’t want to misuse their talents for evil. Their previous failed attempts at human transmutation have humbled them, but they insist on a code for honor and not abusing their abilities. Alphonse and Edward are now valuable assets to the Amestrian State Military.
3 HE IS VERY CAPABLE IN A FIGHT

Ed is small in stature and his anger at the mocking of his appearance has helped him to get his body back on track. He is a fighter because of his compact muscular build, steel limbs and extraordinary alchemy skills. Ed’s automail is a great tool for hand-to-hand fighting when he’s in working condition. Izumi Curtis’ training methods and preparation for combat deserve a lot of credit. Ed might lose a few fights because of his impulsive behavior. But his last fight with Father shows him at the top.
2 HE ACCEPTS GUILT RATHER THAN PUSHING IT AWAY
When trying to connect with a character, denial or refusal to accept responsibility for a tragic event can prove frustrating traits. Edward Elric is an exception to this rule. He has a guilt complex and denies his role in the tragedy. Alphonse’s unfortunate circumstances are his fault. He was the one who initiated the transmutation. Even his brother is resentful to him. He accepts his guilt and it makes him relatable. The guilt he feels after Nina’s death is especially devastating.
1 ED’S LOVE FOR HIS BROTHER SHINES BRIGHTER THAN EVERYTHING ELSE
Because of the many traumas that Ed and Alphonse have experienced in their lives, it is possible that they have the strongest bond of any duo in Fullmetal Alchemist. Although they may have different personalities their brotherly bonds shine through no matter what. Ed gave his arm to perform the soul-binding transmutation that kept Alphonse alive, but not in his actual body. Ed will go to great lengths for his brother and would not have it any other.
10 WORST THINGS ABOUT EDWARD ELRIC
Fullmetal Alchemistis a popular steampunk fantasy anime series that stars Edward Elric, who is the youngest state alchemist to have been born in Amestris’ history. This shonen hero is full of charm, from his scientific mind to his stylish outfit to his love for Winry Rockbell. There’s no doubt that Edward Elric is not without fault. However, the worst aspects of him balance out the best parts of his shonen character. While Ed’s worst qualities don’t make him a bad character, they can still be considered when deciding whether Edward Elric is the best shonen hero. He is complex.
10 EDWARD AND HIS BROTHER ATTEMPTED HUMAN TRANSMUTATION

Edward was not responsible for his loss of Trisha, his mother. But Edward and Alphonse can be blamed for the next steps. They arrogantly dug into the world of human transmutation , and plotted to bring Trisha back to life. This was a clear example of how foolish and careless Ed and his brother were. They should have known that there is a reason such research is prohibited. It was also necessary to conceal it from Izumi Curtis their teacher, which they ignored.
9 EDWARD BURNED HIS FATHER’S HOUSE

Edward and his brother attempted the taboo of human transformation, but they also tried to put this part of their history behind them forever. The brothers set fire to their childhood home one year after failing to transmute the mother. Edward believed that this symbolised him and his brother looking forward to the future. They were mistaken and destroyed a fine house without good reason. When Van Hohenheim, the immortal, returned home, he was shocked to see his house gone.
8 EDWARD COULDN’T ADMIT THAT HE WAS RUNNING AWAY FROM HIS PAST
Partway through Fullmetal Alchemist, Edward met his father Hohenheim at Resembool. Both of them had a difficult encounter. Hohenheim was suspicious that Ed had set fire to the Elric family home in order to cover his shame. Although Edward denied it, Edward knew in his heart that his father was correct but didn’t want to admit it. Although this is a difficult topic for Ed, he would do himself a favor and be more open about it. He will not heal his heart by brushing everything under the carpet.
7 EDWARD IS INSECURE ABOUT HIS HEIGHT

Edward is so short that he hates it. He ranks among the most recent shonen heros. His growth is likely stunted by the fact that his life force is being divided between his body, and Alphonse’s. This theory Edward didn’t realize until later. Edward will lash out at anyone who comments on Edward’s height, May or the homunculus Envy. While it’s inappropriate to tease Ed, he should be taught how to maintain his cool. He is more than his height. In fact, he has grown taller during Brotherhood.
6 EDWARD HOLDS GRUDGES

Edward Elric is known for his grudges and infighting with others. He often makes a fool out of himself. Edward never completely forgave Paninya, even though she had redeemed her self. Edward has a grudge against Scar , the vengeful Scar. Even though they were on the same team, Ed was not very kind to him, even though he had bigger problems. Ed grumbles about Olivier Armstrong, who in fairness, has provoked him many times.
5 EDWARD CONTINUES TO ABUSE HIS AUTOMAIL LIMBS

Edward Elric is known as the fullmetal alchemist. He has his right arm and left leg covered in automail. These metal limbs are often useful, as Ed can use his right arm to stop a bladed attack and reshape his arm to make his own blade. He can also get carried away. Ed is known for pushing his automail limbs too far, breaking them, and has a very blase attitude. Winry, Ed’s mechanic, was shocked to see Ed’s automail broken more than once. Winry didn’t take Ed’s comments seriously enough.
4 ED’S MERCIFUL STRIKE NEARLY COST HIM HIS LIVES MORE THAN ONCE
Edward is a good man. He has good reasons for refusing to die in combat. Edward’s merciful ways often turn against him, and he has nearly lost his life many times. Scar let Alphonse go in exchange for Scar’s surrender. Later, Ed faced the evil Solf J. Kimblee. He tried to win but did not shed any blood. Kimblee, who had a second Philosopher’s Stone, used it to nearly kill Ed. Kimblee had a right to criticize Ed for his naivety about combat.
3 ED WANTS TO GET INTO SHOUTING MATCHES
Edward Elric is a person with a short temper and lots of pride. He reacts badly to being teased or ridiculed. Alphonse will be shocked to learn that the enemy will always try to get under Ed’s skin. Ed can lose his cool and start yelling at people. He even had a brief shouting match when May found him in Father’s lair. Ed could have seen that they were both small and short.
2 EDWARD HAS LOW ENDURANCE IN BATTLE
Edward is an excellent martial artist and skilled alchemist. These skills can help Edward win against many foes. He also has low endurance, stamina and strength. Ed will be severely handicapped if the fight drags out. Ed is not one to slow down an enemy. Edward found the key to Greed’s injury during their first fight, but Ed was already exhausted and unable to finish the fight. He was also tired from fighting the many one-eyed soldiers of Central City and needed Colonel Roy Mustang’s help.
1 EDWARD IS NOT ABLE TO ADMIT HIS ROMANTIC FEELINGS FOR WINRY

It’s okay for characters like Edward Elric not to be a tsundere. Ed is having a hard time admitting to his growing affection for Winry. This gets old. Winry is also affected to a certain extent. Edward needs to have the courage to tell Winry how he feels. He can’t use alchemy terms to propose marriage later to her. It’s time to say “I love” and not just “I do.”
