Grand Blue, sometimes referred to as Grand Blue Dreaming is a comedic and slice-of-life series that was released in the year 2018. The series was developed by Zero-G, the studio that adapted its plot from the original manga by Kenji Inoue.
Zero-G, the creator studio, has also created other adored comedy and slice-of-life series like Science Fell In Love and So I Tried to Prove It as well as My Roommate Is a Cat in recent times. Grand Blue was originally released on July 14, 2018, on local television stations MBS, TBS, BS-TBS, AT-X. The show, which attracted viewers across the globe thanks to its licensing by Amazon Prime Video, currently comprises of only one season.
However, they have been able to please their fans by releasing a live-action film on August 20th, 2020, and they are looking at the possibility of a second anime season. The question is, will the anime get the chance to have a sequel after around three years?
WHAT IS THE PLOTLINE OF GRAND BLUE?
Iori Kitahara was starting his freshman year at Izu University among the ocean waves and glowing sun rays of Izu, the town of the sea. Then, he moved into Grand Blue where his uncle’s dive shop is. He was expecting to walk into a college environment full of gorgeous girls and great friends.
However, things don’t go according to plan. As he enters the shop, he comes across loud people who are two years older than him. He is forced to join in their drinking activities.
Though initially not eager, Iori quickly gets involved in the activities of his friends. This behavior leads Iori to be criticized by his friend Chisa Kotegawa who steps into the picture at the worst moment. In a state of mind, Iori is still hoping to be able to live his ideal college experience; however, will things flow smoothly this time or will he fall into trouble once more?
WILL THERE BE A SECOND SEASON OF GRAND BLUE?
As of November 29th, 2021, Zero-G, or any other related company, is yet to renew the show for the 2nd season. The show aired the first season running from July 14th, 2018, to September 29, 2018. For the past two seasons, it hasn’t received any confirmation for the second season from official channels. This is a normal scenario for a lot of anime, and there is no reason to worry.
If an anime is popular enough, has popularity and sufficient sources, and is economically profitable, it usually is given a new season’s permission. There is no official declaration on this subject, and we’ll speculate about the second season by looking at the major aspects.
MANGA STATUS OF GRAND BLUE
As we’ve said before, the anime is a manga-based adaptation that utilizes written works as the source material. Its manga created by Kenji Inoue and illustrated by Kimitake Yoshioka is produced through Kodansha within the publication “Good! Afternoon” in 2014. The positive side is the manga is currently being created. With the release of the final volume on August 5, 2021, the manga has reached 17 volumes. The manga can be found in English with the help of Kodansha USA.
The initial season of the anime comprised 12 episodes. Only five volumes were transformed into the anime in the initial season. There are 11 manga volumes remaining to be adapted for the next anime seasons. The conclusion that we can draw from this is that there’s plenty of available stock material that will last for at minimum two seasons.
DISC SALES (BLURAY AND DVD) OF THE ANIME
Disc sales are extremely important for anime. The majority of profits come through disc sales. To be eligible for the opportunity to have a new season, it’s anticipated to sell at minimum 4000 discs typically. If it falls below this amount, the second season may not be considered as profitable by the committee. The sales of the discs for Grand Blue were not very good. The anime’s discs only sold 14,55 units. This figure is not quite the desired number. If you look at the numbers in terms of sales on discs, the likelihood of an upcoming season is distant.
OTHER FACTORS AND ACTUAL POPULARITY
Grand Blue attracted new viewers every day since its initial release and was placed 234th on Myanimelist for popularity. The show has a Twitter page that is followed by 42,000 people.
While it’s not an effective social media craze in Japan, there is a significant Google index of the show. Based on the current popularity, a sequel could be successful in sales of discs. Creators are able to evaluate the current level of popularity and decide to plan an additional season.
Furthermore, a globally well-known and popular platform like Amazon Prime has obtained the broadcasting rights, which increases the likelihood of a second season being a huge success. The release of a live-action film is an important factor to keep this popular brand on the radar. The movie looks fantastic, except for the sales of the disc and the general appeal in Japan.
Grand Blue manga compared to the anime
Each episode was preceded by a statement about the fact that it is not promoting underage drinking; however, this is the main focus of the whole manga series. The Peak Boo diving club seems to be an extra-curricular feature. It’s like the mangaka was really hoping to tell a story of college frat life; however, an editor wanted a school-related manga idea.
Manga fans will be pleased to know that the animated adaptation based on the original material with fervor. The manga was well-known for its humor and beautiful dysmorphic characters, and Director Shinji Takamatsu (known for School Rumble and Daily Lives of High School Boys) did a fantastic job at keeping the spirit of the manga.
The pace was excellent as was the timing. Jokes were fast as each episode modified just a couple of chapters. Fortunately, the titles for episodes corresponded with the titles of a few chapters, so it’s easy to identify which chapters were altered.
- Grand Blue Episode 1: The name is a reference to Chapter 1 “Deep Blue”
- Grand Blue Episode 2: The name is a reference to Chapter 4 “Underwater”
- Grand Blue Episode 3: It is named in honor of Chapter 5 “New World”

If you want to be able to read before the adaptation of the anime, it is suggested to go through the entire manga starting from Chapter 22. If you want the complete experience, it’s best to start at the beginning. Because of time constraints, certain events were altered in the animation as well as some jokes were not included. Certain characters’ ages were increased for legal reasons; there were various odd modifications.
For instance, when Tokki, Bukki, Azusa, and Nanaka arrived in Okinawa in episode 10, they didn’t have their drivers’ licenses. However, according to the comic, they could not drive as they had been drunk when they arrived. You’d think that the particular detail should be left out as it shows them as somewhat responsible by not driving after drinking.
The positive side is that there are currently manga chapters that are available for making Grand Blue Season 2. In the course of 2019, there will have enough chapters to create Grand Blue Season 3. Even better, readers who read in English are able to jump right into manga Volume 6 should you would like to learn more about the story.
Grand Blue Dreaming Season 2 release datE
In the latest report, NBCUniversal or Studio Zero-G or any other company that is involved in producing the series have not officially announced an official Grand Blue Season 2 release date. The production of a sequel has never been confirmed.

Studio Zero-G is renowned for its second-season programming. For instance, they acquired One Room Season 2 from Typhoon Graphics, and that anime aired during this same time frame as Grand Blue anime.
