Gundam Director Yoshiyuki Tomino‘s controversial comment about Attack on Titan author Hajime Isayama have resurfaced on Yaraon (a popular Japanese commenting platform) on March 5, 2022.
In his online magazine “Tomino Ryū no Tomino”, the director had called Isayama a stubborn bullied child who relieved his anger through drawing manga.
“In short, he used to be a stubborn bullied child. He relieves his resentment by drawing manga,” Tomino said,
He said that the manga was more offensive than radical sexual expressions and that he would never allow it to be published.
“I personally don’t want to read it, and I don’t want to evaluate it. The fact that such manga is received like this means that the present era is pretty terrible.”
Fans were not happy with Tomino’s accusations and began calling him out on the platform. Some comments included:
“Reiner seems to be a character designed after the author’s favorite senior, but I wonder if he was really being bullied.”
“Gundam may be interesting from the fans’ point of view, but it’s boring from my point of view.“
“Gundam is better than Attack on Titan!” That is what Tomino wants to say right?“
“The old man is jealous“
“Even though Tomino might have stated otherwise, Attack on Titan really is a masterpiece.“
While he continued to cut down Attack On Titan, Tomino added that he can acknowledge Isayama’s efforts of creating the plot and drawing them. He was also able to understand why Isayama had created this work.
“At the root of it all, however, are his childhood experiences of being bullied. He was able to make enemies and other similar themes due to his depression. Now that I understand this background, it makes sense, ” Tomino said.
However, he still was not okay with such a grotesque world being portrayed in a comic book and said it was the editor’s fault to pass it for commercialization.
“Editors should understand the author’s thoughts and look for a different expression. To publish ‘Attack on Titan’ in that way without such control, I think it’s a problem before radical sexual expression.”
Isayama began serializing Attack on Titan in Kodansha’s Bessatsu Shonen Magazine from September 2009. The last chapter of the manga was published in April 2021. It is collected into 34 tankobon volumes. The author is currently involved in the production of Attack on the Final Season Part 2.
Isayama revealed in a recent interview that he wanted a break before starting a new career.
