Heartstopper Season 1 Review

Heartstopper is different from other teen dramas, and it’s stronger for it. In recent years, we’ve seen many titles that use the same old clichés. Teen gets drunk, teen falls into drug addiction, a love triangle engulfs three people who could communicate better. We’re even seeing titles such as Extracurricular and You Are My Spring in Korea that push these teen-oriented shows into darker and more mature territory. Heartstopper couldn’t have arrived at a better moment in this regard.

This story is straightforward, simple and sure to warm the hearts of all who are interested. Truham is an all-boys secondary school located in the UK. Charlie, a year 10 student, is having trouble. Charlie is bullied and has all the usual tribulations and trials with his outcast friends. He even gets into a private relationship with Ben, a fellow student.

Charlie discovers Ben has a girlfriend, and has only been using Charlie to communicate with her, so our protagonist falls for Nick Nelson, the star player in rugby.

Charlie quickly forms a friendship with Nick, despite being “the straightest man you’ll ever see”. But is Nick actually gay? Are these two “almost-were” best friends? This question sums up the entire show. With 8 episodes, each episode clocking in at 25 mins long, Heartstopper balances drama and romance with a loving group of supporting characters.

It would have been easy to just write in a bunch stereotypical teens. With the exception of Harry, the school bully, who has very little depth, everyone here has a lot of things which contributes to Heartstopper’s appeal. Charlie has Isaac and Tao as his best friends. Elle is now at an all-girls school, and they continue to meet up after-school. Elle meets Tara and Darcy, who each have their own secrets. (No spoilers!)

Although these characters share some wonderful moments together, if we are being super picky, it may be a shame Isaac isn’t given much of an arc and is left a little bit behind. The plot isn’t complicated, nor does it have many unexpected twists. Instead, the focus is almost entirely on the main romance. Although I think this elevates the material, others may be more critical.

Heartstopper’s lack of deep storytelling is more than compensated for by its visual flair. There are 8 episodes with cartoon animations that overlap in various scenes. These moments, whether it’s the lightning crackles that Charlie and Nick nearly hold hands or the little love hearts that emerge from a bit of dialogue are wonderful and feel very similar to Life Is Strange’s artistic direction.

Heartstopper is a well-written romance. This is a touching story of love and acceptance wrapped in a warm, fuzzy feeling of warmth and captivating visuals. This show is not to be missed and easily one the best of the year.
