If you’re part of the weeb and anime community, you’ve likely come across these six-digit numbers called hentai codes. They are widely employed in anime memes and have a unique buzz surrounding them.
Being an anime meme page owner, I’ve encountered numerous people asking for the hentai numbers whenever I upload an anime doujinshi meme. But, I’ve also encountered many new anime fans asking what to do with these codes. They know they have something related to hentai, but they don’t know their exact meaning.
What are the six-digit hentai numbers or Hentai Codes?
6-digit codes refer to the reference codes used by the pornographic website nHentai. Entering various 6-digit codes at the end of the nHentai URL will lead to specific Hentai series appearing on the website. These numbers are shared across different websites to promote the “sauces” for particular Hentai series. Image macros that reference the 6-digit code became common in the anime world throughout 2020, but often without information about what the numbers refer to, confusing people who are not in the loop.
These are unique identifiers used to identify a doujin that is published online. For more precise information, they are part of a page’s address.
In case you’re not sure of the meaning of doujins, they’re comics with erotic themes which are created in a style that is based on Japanese manga. These comics were originally produced by Japanese artists. Yet today, it’s a global phenomenon created by people from all over the world.
What’s amazing about these manga is that they truly are works of art. They’re just as stunningly drawn as official manga created by a professional mangaka. Not only that, a few of these hentai manga are very well-written.
Do you believe that there’s an erotic cartoon that caused people to be sad and depressed? I don’t think so. They are usually intended for individuals who want to “pleasure” themselves. And it is unlikely that anyone would consider that a hentai doujin could be an emotional experience. However, it is there. Its hentai code is 177013.
Origin of Hentai Numbers
The exact source of the meme has not been confirmed. On February 8, 2018, Redditor Asphyxiem posted an “I’m Going to Tell You A Story” image macro with the title “The Legend of 177013” to /r/animemes. The post referenced the 6-digit code 177013, which is the nHentai number for Emergence (shown in the following). The post received 600 votes in just over two years.
On August 18, 2018, Redditor Kiencancap shared an image macro that reads, “Anime girls with ‘Yuki’ as their name are cutesies” as well as four photos of cartoon girls (shown below). The post was captioned with “I spent 118282hrs creating this. Can we get 5 updoots?” 118282 is one of the nHentai source numbers of an issue from the manga “Yukinya!” with one of the illustrations depicted within the macro.

The joke was shared on social media, especially on subreddits like /r/animemes as well as the /r/hentaimemes subreddit, 9Gag, and Twitter. On June 7, 9Gag user herr_flauschig shared the image “My numbers list updated” receiving more than 640 points and 116 comments in just 17 months (shown below). A lot of users who commented are wondering where to put the numbers and what they are referring to. On July 23, Redditor mershed_perderders launched /r/s which is a subreddit devoted to sharing codes with 6 digits. On November 1, Urban Dictionary user Ophsfucker wrote a definition of “6 numbers,” receiving over 600 thumbs-ups over the course of a year.
The meme gained more attention throughout 2020, especially during the latter half. On June 14, 2020, Redditor ZemyasO posted an image macro with Yukinya’s Ahegao face, as well as the 6-digit code that was in the title of the post, gaining over 600 votes in just five months (shown below right). On September 18 of the year 2020, an image macro that referenced two 6-digit codes posted by MyselfHD has received more than 6,100 upvotes on the r/hentaimemes channel (shown below on the right).
