Ivan was part of the Survey Corps who took part in the 57th mission beyond the walls. He was among the soldiers who didn’t make it through the titans’ assault. His body was one of four which were not recovered because of titans, causing Erwin Smith to mark his name on a “not discovered” list. Dieter and Jurgen are furious and report the incident to Erwin; however, their concerns are ignored. In defiance of the instructions of their superiors, they decide to take Ivan’s body and turn the body over to his family. This led to a group of Titans beginning to pursue them, which led to Jurgen’s death and caused the Survey Corps to throw the remaining corpses away to get away from The Titans. In the course of the escape, Ivan’s corpse was left behind.

After escaping from the Titans, Levi gives Dieter the Survey Corps insignia, telling the soldier that it is Ivan’s and this was evidence of Ivan’s presence. The story of the escape is described in the tale.
